Honor Mom! - Message #246 - May 14, 2006
Are men and women to have equal honor in families? Absolutely! The Bible says, "Honor your father and your mother" (Exodus 20:12). For example, in the eyes of the children, mom is to have equal honor with dad. This means that a father has absolutely no right to demean his wife in the eyes of other family members. But many fathers will use the Bible against their wives. They point to Ephesians 5:22, "Wives, be subject to your own husbands." And they rule their wives in a dictatorial way.
This perversion of God's order for the family is the result of sin and the fall. After the fall, God said to Eve, "Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you" (Genesis 3:16). Compare with this what the Bible says about sin. "Its desire is for you, but you must master it" (Genesis 4:7). In other words, the sinful desire of a wife is to dominate her husband! The response of a husband is to crush the desire of his wife. The terrible result of sin is that "he shall rule over you" in a tyrannical way!
What's the answer? Husbands must learn the love of Christ. They must follow Christ! "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her" (Ephesians 5:25).
