N.B. Hospital removes bibles to stop them from spreading germs.

-- A hospital in Fredericton has removed bedside Bibles out of fears they might be spreading germs.
A spokeswoman for the River Valley Health Authority, Jane Stafford, told the CBC that the decision to remove the Bibles from the Chalmers Hospital was made strictly for health reasons.

She said it was a matter of common sense and infection control.
Some bugs viruses such as C. difficile, can live for months on telephones, toilets, stethoscopes and books, said Stafford.
But some people were suspicious of the hospital's motives.
Rev. Karl Csaszar, a pastor at the Skyline Acres Baptist Church, said it was strange that of all the potential sources of infection, Bibles were singled out.
"If the Bible is a threat in a drawer, where does it stop?" asked Csaszar.
He said the hospital had not offered proof the Bibles were spreading germs among patients.
"So the question is, how do we know if the scriptures in the drawer are really causing an infection or causing a threat to their health?"
Fredericton Mayor Brad Woodside said he wondered why the hospital would remove the Bibles when other hospitals don't seem to have problems with them.
"I think it's political correctness at its extreme and I'm rather disappointed," said Woodside.
Woodside said a number of people had called him to express concern over the decision.
Stafford said the the decision was not about political correctness.
She said patients who want to read the Bible are more than welcome to bring their own.
Two of New Brunswick's largest hospital corporations don't plan to remove Bibles from patient rooms.
Patricia Crowdis, of the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation, said Saint John Regional Hospital and other facilities under the corporation umbrella would not be following suit.
"We are not following the same procedures as River Valley Health," Crowdis said.
The message was the same from Moncton hospital.
"Our infection control nurse has not advised us to change our practice," said Michelle Bernier of Health Region 1 (Beausejour). "We won't remove Bibles from rooms."
Paul Mercer, executive director of Gideons International in Canada, said the organization has a desire to provide spiritual support for patients as part of a holistic healing process.
"The Bible should be available to all who have a desire to read it," Mercer said Friday.

In 2003, the Calgary Health Region (CHR) found itself in a firestorm of protest over a reported plan to remove Gideon Bible's from a patients' rooms. While the health provider denied any such plan, the Calgary Herald stood by its initial report and published portions of a CHR draft policy it had obtained:

"The random distribution of religious tracts, pamphlets, objects and books will not be permitted in the health care facilities of the Calgary Health Region. The display of sacred texts, religious tracts, pamphlets and books will not be permitted in the health care facilities of the Calgary Health Region. Sacred texts of one faith to the exclusion of all others will not be provided in patient rooms."

Wow, sounds like someone just got a bit creative with their reasoning. If there is a hint of truth to the reason (HA!!), the toilets should be the next to go. Sorry, this is ridiculous & it frustrates me.

Actually. They're removing anything that contains old dust. In that dust can be mold spores, etc. Take it from me. I'm extremely allergic to moldy dust and can't be in old libraries or old book stores for too long. It's unhealthy for someone already sick to breathe in that stuff. I don't think it has anything to do with the Bible per se.

Those mold spores can be in lots of things & while things do need to be kept as asthetic as possible, there are alternative ways. Many things are disposable - they can either be tossed or patients can take them home - that is a simple solution for the "problem" with Bibles that have become "dusty". Actually, none of the Bibles would be kept that long anyway - that they become moldy.

They could also simply include the question on admission forms..."may a Holy Bible be placed in your room?" Good grief...Jesus did a LOT for us, can't we even bother to go to "a little trouble" to make His Word available?

I'm speaking from a medical perspective here...they are reaching for a reason to exclude them. It is just one more way of removing Christianity & anything to do with it. If we "let it slide", it will only get worse.

I dont think its so much a health issue and it is anti - Christian issue. It plainly said no RELIGIOUS book, tract, pamplet... and not one religion over another.

By removing the bibles , they have also removed our great Physician ! Jesus !

the first Bible i ever read was the one placed in my room at university by the gideons. something i will be forever thankful for.

to me and to the countless other who have been able to find our Lord because of this selfless act i offer my thanks and my prayers, for without them it would have been harder for me to have first discovered the wonder and awe that our Lord is.

so i am in total shock at the inability for people to understand the effect that this book can have on our lives, the love that is quoted in the passages within and the life changing mercy that can be found by reading His Words and praying afterwards.

my hope and my prayer is that one day every school will have a Bible for every child to read, every hospital will place a Bible by every bed side, every hotel, every dorm, every workplace staff room, every person in every place will have access to His Word, to His saving testament.

God bless

Could it be that they actually are having problems with Infection? And because a Bible is paper they cannot wipe it down with disinfectents? All the other objects mentioned are plastic... they can quickly clean them. But a Paper Bible cannot be cleaned without destorying it...

Just a thought. Its ok to not see everything as a personal attack.

The Bible = Book of Life
Book of Life = Word of GOD
Word of GOD = Word Became Flesh (John 1:14)
Word = Jesus Christ

So exactly how sick did the Bible make the patients again?

Chad, I agree, lots of healing Recorded in the bible, and without doubt its been used to heal people since it was written. But the text printed on the page doesnt make the paper anti-bacterial. I just think people in this country freak out constantly. They havnt banned the bible in the hospital by any means. they just suspect the porius, uncleanable surface is resulting in infection...Why is everyone up in arms?

My point was to emphasize GOD's healing to many in many cases, nothing rare or uncommon in the Bible.

This means, pick up the bible in FAITH and do not frustrate about dust or infections on the bible cover or pages

"your faith has healed you". That mentality. Of course not everyone is a believer and those who do believe - maybe their faith isn't as strong.
