Jesus asked the question in John 5:44 “How can you believe, which receive honor one of another, and seek not the honor that comes from God only?”
Many people seek the honor and praise of men more than the honor that comes from serving God. Many a preacher man is also guilty of this, seeking to please their own congregations by speaking well of them, even though they need to be reproved and rebuked because of their sinful behaviour. Speaking out against sinful behaviour is not a popular thing among sinners, as it will not fill up church pews and offering plates. But calling sinners to repentance is an important part of the ministry.
Paul said in Galatians 1:10 “For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” God told the prophet Samuel “for them that honor me I will honor.” So like with Ezekiel, if God says go out and warn the wicked of their wicked ways, you do as God says; not seeking the honor of men.
Jesus said in John 5:41 “I receive not honor from men.” Jesus also said John 8:54 “If I honor myself, my honor is nothing: it is my Father that honors me; of whom you say, that he is your God. Jesus also said that He did not seek his own glory. And that is the problem with many a preacher man today, they seek the honor and praise of men by speaking the words sinners want to hear, not what they need to hear.
Paul said in 2 Timothy 4:3 “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears.”
So here we are, just like Paul said, the time is here right now when speaking out against sinful behaviour is not a popular message. More and more sinners want to hear a “sin all you want and still be saved” message. They are told, just say a few words and you are saved; praise Jesus! And then they go along in their sinful ways. This message will fill up churches, and perhaps it will sell alot of books, and it may heap to itself the honor and praise of sinful men; but not that of God.
Jesus said of the scribes and Pharisees, that all their works they do is for the purpose of being seen by men. They loved the greetings of the people, and to be called of men “Rabbi, Rabbi.” Jesus said these false teachers shut up the kingdom of heaven against men, for neither would they themselves go in, but they also would not allow those who were trying to enter to go in.
And sadly this is what we see today. A sincere messenger of God will not be accepted by mainstream religion today; just as the prophets, the apostles, and Jesus were not accepted by mainstream religion in their day. The world will only receive it’s own. Jesus said John 5:43 “I am come in my Fathers name, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.”
A sincere man of God will speak the unvarnished words of God truthfully and faithfully, not holding back the Truth in unrighteousness. A sincere man of God will not seek his own glory, neither will he seek the honor and praise of men. A sincere man of God will, by the Spirit, reprove the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; and will seek the honor that only comes from God.
Peace and God bless
