When you have misfortunes after misfortunes, challenges after challenges, setbacks after setbacks, loss after loss over the years; how do you know that it's God (to strengthen your faith? to test if you will deny Him? to prepare you something coming?), the devil (demonic attack, evils spirits, satanic agenda against your life). Remember, all these happen while you are a prayerful person who reads the Bible and fasts. How do you know? Because I think this is an issue which frustrates most of us Christians.

Jas 1:2; Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials,
Jas 1:3; knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
Jas 1:4; And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Satan can't do anything without God's permission.

Job 1:7; The LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it."
Job 1:8; The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil."
Job 1:9; Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nothing?
Job 1:10; "Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
Job 1:11; "But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face."
Job 1:12; Then the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him." So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD.

Heb 11:17; By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son;

1Pet 1:6; In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,
1Pet 1:7; so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

Sometimes the Holy Spirit will lead into a specific situation to be tested.

Matt 4:1; Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Testing and trials happen to all Christians. We don't always pass all of the tests.

Luke 22:31; "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat;
Matt; 26:75; And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, "Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly.

But we should be getting stronger and more resolute in our faith when these things happen. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where the attacks come from.
We don't really need to know. But sometimes it's obvious. Either way, God sees what we are going through. Either way, He will reward us for the tests we pass.

Jas 1:12; Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
Jas 1:13; Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
Jas 1:14; But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear.

1Cor 10:13; No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.

There are times of rest between the trials usually. We can even pray so that we won't be led into temptation. That doesn't mean God will never let you be tested.

Matt 6:13; 'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]'
Luke 11:4; 'And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.'"

But I sometimes wonder if God likes to reward those who willingly accept the fight.

Eph 6:12; For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

I think God loves to reward people like David who aren't afraid to go out and face Goliath, or like Peter, who wasn't afraid to step out of the boat.

Eph 6:10; Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.
Eph 6:11; Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.
Eph 6:12; For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Eph 6:13; Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.
