The Bible tells us that we need to be led by the Holy Spirit (see for example Romans 8:12-14 and Galatians 5:16-25). Therefore, it must be possible for every one of us to discern the promptings and guidance of the Holy Spirit within us!

You can hear the voice of God, and this article will teach you how.

It is not the purpose of this article to go into all of the different ways in which God speaks to us, such as dreams, visions, tongues and interpretation, prophecies, and so on, but this article will give you practical guidance in how to discern God's usual "voice" which He often uses to speak to us.

The Four Voices We Hear

There are actually four types of "voices" which we hear speaking to us, and it is important that we learn to distinguish each one so that we are able to discern the true voice of God:

The voice that is perhaps the most obvious is our own voice. In addition to our speaking voice, we also talk to ourselves inside our heads, we see images and pictures inside our heads, we have emotions and feelings and desires, and so on. Our minds tell us what we think, our wills tell us what we want, and our emotions tell us how we feel. The Bible refers to our minds, wills, and emotions as our "flesh nature," and this article will give you a better understanding of the "voice" of the flesh.

Another type of voice which clamors for our attention is the "voice" of other people. Sometimes people say things which are true, noble, and good, and sometimes people say things which are just the opposite. This article will provide some guidance to help you discern what you are hearing from the "voice" of other people.

The third type of voice is the "voice" of the devil. The devil has crafty ways of speaking to us which he has perfected over the millennia. He does not appear before us in a red, cloven-hoofed suit and speak out loud to us, he is much more subtle than that. What he does is to throw thoughts into our minds like flaming arrows, and he speaks to us through the worldly ideas and viewpoints that he has injected into other people. By the time you finish this article you will have a better understanding of how to "extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one" (Ephesians 6:16).

The fourth and final type of voice is the most important, but it is also the most subtle. It is the voice of God. God does not speak to us in our minds, He speaks to us in our spirits because that is where the Holy Spirit lives. Unfortunately, we tend to spend most of our thought life in our heads, in other words in "the mind of the flesh" (Romans 8:7, AMP), focused on the sensory world around us where our physical senses and our thoughts, feelings, desires, and emotions are constantly being bombarded and stimulated in worldly, carnal, fleshly ways. We tend to live on the shallow surface, so to speak, rarely venturing deeper where the Spirit of God lives within us. The result is that many of us do not know where our spirits are nor how to hear and be led by our spirits. Because of this we leave ourselves wide open to fall for the many deceptions of the devil. This article will help you to begin recognizing the leadings and promptings that are coming from your spirit, and how to be more Spirit-led.

Could you please post this article? You keep referring to this article and I think the readers would like to read it.

I tend to disagree with most if not all that you said, let me tell you why.

You can't say what God does and does not do, unless the Word of God says so.

Acts 10:3-4

3One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!"
4Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked.

Cornelius had a Vision, He heard an angel of God.

Acts 10:9-13

9About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."

Both these men, Peter and Cornelius heard God's voice, they both had a vision, we can deduct that this all happened in their "minds", where visions normally occur.

This article or post is not a referrance on how to discern God's voice, you are placing limits on God and His awesome power.

A fast fact is this, He is!

Exodus 3:14
14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am .

We are not allowed to place barriers on God's power, we are not allowed to encamp the wonderful glory of God to our own perceptions, He is! God is all powerful, all knowing, all everything.

If God wants to speak to us in a loud voice inside our minds He will.

I do not agree with your thread and I think you need to give more scriptural reference when making such a point.
May God please speak to me in an audible voice! May we all pray for that day.
The voice of God is the voice of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:32-33

32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

Satan does not speak to us, he does not influence us.

1 John 4:1-4

1Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
4You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

We have overcome them! We are not of the world anymore.

May God give us rest.

I'm interested in the article, too, bulkapron. I do believe what you said is true.

God's voice does speak to us as believers and scripture says so. "My sheep hear My voice," Jesus says in John 10:3 and several other scriptures too!

I just heard God's voice earlier in this day and it is the most wonderful experience! It has been awhile since God has spoken to me directly like that. I always welcome His voice. Even if it is to discipline me or warn me, I long to hear my Lord's voice in my spirit!

Praise God.

Hebrews 3:7 "So, as the Holy Spirit says: 'Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert."

Worship a key to hearing God's voice.

Hi Folks,

One of the ways I was taught to here God's voice, or to get a specific word from the Lord was to; Enter His gates with thanksgiving... Start to thank the Lord for the blessings and his goodness towards you. ... and His courts with praise... when we praise the Lord we praise him for His greatness. This leads us on to the final stage which is worship, in worship we our focused on his Holiness. At that stage you are in the presence of the Lord and if you desire to hear his voice He will speak directly to you.
It works best in churches that have a tradition of Holy Spirit lead worship, but the basic principles will work for anyone if they are prepared to work at it.

Blessings,

Tonyb

The Four Voices We Hear? I beg your pardon? 4 voices? Ttripe indeed

Spot on brother.....keep telling it forth.

Best way is to learn for yourself and pray to Him that you may better understand Him. Like someone said previously, there are uncountable ways for God to speak to us. He always knocks loud enough for us to hear. I just have one problem, it sounds like a few people dont give satan enough credit. Dont under-estimate him or you will surely fall. Just turn to the Lord and all is well.

Yeah there are voices, but it really can't be just four! God works in ifferent ways and everyone is different. I do not believe i have ever heard God but i believe he is always there. I feel if i pray as i am working towards something, that the outcome is truly what God wants!

I really like your input Tonyb, may God bless you brother!

CrazyforChrist, your correct in saying I give no credit to Satan, he's a worthless worm, who will burn in hell.

I would like you to read through 2 Peter 2 if you have the time, ask Jesus to lead your thoughts and heart. Also read James 3, I could post it here, but it would be very long.

I give no room for Satan, none at all. Satan influences the unbelievers, the pigs and dogs, not the Christians whom the Holy Spirit abides in.

God bless you

Dear brother bulkapon
Thank you for your effort to share with us, I believe hearing God personally is very important, after all God is a personal God (1 to 1).
So we need to long to experience this wonderful thing, (receiving new revelations, directions, warnings, Gods future plan in our life……….)
People usually go to their pastors every time they are confused with things because they believe God speaks to the pastors not to themselves but the truth is God is closer than our breath is and he loves talking to his children , we just have to give him our full attention.

How about appreciating his efforts first instead of telling him what went wrong.

It’s true that we are over comers through Christ Jesus but not by denying ,Satan can still influence our thought life and block our hearing from God.

I believe we have to make a choice to walk in the spirit in order to overcome our sinful nature and thought.

What about the church of Corinth? They are still children of God ,in fact I like how Paul addressed this church, knowing what was happening in that church (you can read 1 Corinth)
1corinth 1:2
2To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:

But they gave Satan a chance to access and do what we get in book of Galatians 5:19-21 in that church.

19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

This things obviously hinders our hearing from God. (I picture it) like trying to speak through your cell phone to some one while driving your car in a heavy traffic area.
Blessings

Hi abigya, I never said I deny Satan, I just don't give him glory. You have not proven to me that Satan may influence a Christian, you have only given reference to sin and sinful activity, which comes from Satan for sure, but Satan does not make me do things.

I'm sorry if I sounded hard towards bulkapon, I just believe in the awesome power of God, unmatched, unsurpassed power of God.

Jesus said if we are His, no one can snatch us out of His or Father's hands.

This thread became a wonderful discussion about God and the way He speaks to us, should we rather not give God all the credit and glory and leave Satan out of the equation, concerning this topic?

The voice of God is the voice of God, I can't mix it up with Satan.

Thanks for sharing the piece with us bulkapon, but please listen to what I said people, if you have something to say, back it up with scripture.

God bless
Much love

Article from gotquestions.org

Question: "How can we recognize the voice of God?"

Answer: This question has been asked by countless people throughout the ages. Samuel heard the voice of God, but didn't recognize it until he was instructed by Eli (1 Samuel 3:1-10). Gideon had a physical revelation from God and he still doubted what he had heard, to the point of asking for a sign, not once, but three times (Judges chapter 6, esp.vs.17-22, 36-40)! When we are listening for God's voice, how can we know that He is the one speaking? First of all, we have something that Gideon and Samuel did not. We have the complete Bible, the inspired word of God, to read, study and meditate on. "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Do you have a question about a certain topic or decision in your life? See what the Bible has to say about it. God will never lead you or direct you contrary to what He has taught or promised in His Word (Titus 1:2).

Secondly, to hear God's voice we must recognize it. Jesus said, "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27). I can personally relate to this verse, except the animals involved are cattle. My father-in-law owns a small ranch. Whenever we go out to visit, I can count on, at least once a day, driving out with him to check on the herd. My father-in-law can step out of the truck, call a few gentle words, and soon the pickup is surrounded by cows, eagerly awaiting a mouthful of hay. But if I so much as open the door on my side of the truck, there will be cattle scattered from one end of the pasture to the other. So what's the difference? The cattle are with my father-in-law at least once, and sometimes two or three times, a day. Because of their daily encounter with the one that feeds and cares for them, the cows are comfortable with him, and they can immediately recognize a stranger among them. If we are to know God's voice, we must spend time with Him daily.

Be sure that you are spending quality time daily in prayer, Bible study, and quiet contemplation of His Word. The more time you spend intimately with God and His Word the easier it will be to recognize His voice and His leading in your life. Employees at a bank are trained to recognize counterfeits by studying genuine money so closely, that it is easy to spot a fake. We are to be so familiar with God’s Word, which He has spoken, that when God does speak to us or lead us, it is clear that it is God. God speaks to us so that we may understand truth. While God can and does speak audibly to people, He speaks primarily through His Word; but sometimes also through the Holy Spirit to our consciences, through circumstances, and through other people. By applying what we hear to the truth of Scripture, we can learn to recognize His voice.

Hello Folks,

Thanks for the encouragement Stephen and Teraside, I appreciate it.

It was said of Moses, that God spoke face to face with him as a man does with his friend. I believe that relationship is available to every child of God now. On the condition that we are prepared to pay the price to get there.

Being into the Word and meditating on it is no small help. I was taught that prayer and praise are like wings that lift you into the presence of God. The type of prayer being a heart response to the Lord an expression of your love and thankfulness to Him, that is usually the point where the Holy Spirit comes and starts to lift you into the heavenly places, it's just a cases of following His leading then, until you arrive at the throne of Grace. Once you are there, in the Lord's presence many things happen to you. The first things that may happen is you sense joy bubbling up on the inside of you, ' In His presence there is fullness of joy...'

One question I would like to propose is, how many Christian songs do you know of that speak of seeking or seeing the Lord's face? I've heard quite a few over the years. One went thus, ' Standing in the presence of the Lord, I see Him face to face my precious Lord...' If we believe that these songs are inspired by the Holy Spirit and that He meant what He said, then surely more of us should see Jesus, leave alone hear his voice?

Blessings,

Tonyb

I think listening and getting know Gods voice varies from person to person. The voice I hear from God is very authorative, He shows love and kindness towards His children, but with authority and with power.

The little whispering voice that people told me to listen too just didn't ring with me, so I asked God to do something so I knew it was Him speaking to me and on most days He has done that too.

About 4/5 weeks ago, I quit smoking and when I get the graving of having a ciggie, I get a very stern voice saying "NO" Satan won't tell me to stop smoking, so I know that can only be from God.

Satan would love me to go back to smoking.

I think this is a great topic because it makes us ask ourselves how we hear from GOD. Many people who responded spoke true things. GOD's relationship with us is a personal relationship and HE speaks to us in ways that HE knows we will hear HIM.

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. John 10:27.

There are many ways GOD speaks to me. Sometimes HE will bring something to my thoughts and I meditate on it until I see what GOD was trying to say. He speaks to me through HIS Word. I will be reading the bible and a certain scripture will jump out and be like a revelation. GOD also speaks through what is called an unction, it's like GOD is leading you to do something or go somewhere.

As teraside said, GOD has no limit in ways that HE can speak to you. GOD knows you better and will speak to you in a way that HE knows you will recognise as HIS voice.

When we spend time in prayer and worship then we are opening up ourselves to hear from GOD. When we fast we are heightening our spiritual senses to hear what GOD is saying.

Hope this will help someone.
