Hypnotism
Christian or Occult?

“This is how much God loved the world:
He gave his Son, his one and only Son.
And this is why:

by believing in him,
anyone can have a whole and lasting life.”
(John 3:16)
It Is The Work Of The Devil
"The thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
I came so they can have real and eternal life,
more and better life than they ever dreamed of."
(Jesus, John 10:10, NLT and MSG)
“When mediums go into hypnotic trances and contact the ‘dead,’ when clairvoyants reveal information which they could not possibly know, when fortunetellers through self-hypnosis reveal the future, Satan is most certainly at work.”
--A Picture Of Satan--
--Satan Is A Defeated Foe--
"But one other thing needs to be said about the devil: He is a defeated foe! By His death and resurrection Jesus Christ conquered all the forces of death and Hell and Satan, and when we belong to Christ, we are safe from all these terrors forever. Make sure of your salvation by giving your life to Christ today."~Billy Graham
Some day "the devil, who deceived them, will be thrown into the lake of burning sulfur ..for ever and ever" (Revelation 20:10).
"Satan and his demons are destined to go to hell forever” (Matthew 25:41).
Someday all the evil in our world will be destroyed, and Christ will reign in perfect justice and love.
"The thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
I came so they can have real and eternal life,
more and better life than they ever dreamed of."
(John 10:10, NLT and MSG)
“I give them real and eternal life.
They are protected from the Destroyer
for good.
No one can steal them
from out of my hand.”
(Jesus, John 10:28)
Hypnotism Should Be Completely Avoided
Because hypnosis is an integral part of the occult, because it is a door to the demonic, because it overrides human will and rational thought, because it operates on deception (and is the work of the Deceiver himself), because it attempts to alter personal beliefs and faith, because of its potential for spiritual deception, because it shifts our faith from God to man, because it is not a science, because of its known harmful effects and because it is the work of the Devil, who is an evil, cruel, hateful, wicked, malicious liar, killer and adversary who tries to stop God’s work and keep us from Jesus (the source of real, fulfilled, abundant, whole and lasting life), hypnotism should be completely avoided.
“The wise Christian will completely avoid it, even for ‘medical’ purposes. It is obvious that hypnosis is lethal...for whatever purpose it is used. The moment one surrenders himself to the doorway of the occult, even in the halls of ‘science’ and ‘medicine,’ he is vulnerable to the powers of darkness.”

It Comes From The Occult
Hypnotism has been an integral part of the occult for thousands of years, used by witch doctors, spirit mediums, shamans, Hindus, Buddhists, and yogis. The hypnotic trance being done through medical doctors now is not significantly different from occultic hypnosis.
It Is An Open Door To The Demonic
The subject in an hypnotic trance can and does spontaneously plunge into the danger zone and the whole range of occult phenomena, including....
- Out-of-body experiences/disembodied state/sense of separation from the body
- Clairvoyance--“Part of the larger phenomenon know as extra sensory perception (ESP), clairvoyance is the ability to discern images not readily detected by the five senses. Those with this ‘sixth sense’ receive messages transmitted over both temporal distances — visions of events occurring in either the past (retrocognition) or future (precognition) — and geographic distances — events happening simultaneously but in different locations. Other terms for clairvoyance include second sight, shadow sight, prophecy, and spiritual communication.”
- Hallucination
- Mystical states similar to those described by Eastern mystics
- Demonic possession
- Spontaneous psychic powers
- So-called clinical death
- Spontaneous “memories” of past and future lives and former identities, about one-fifth involving existence on other planets (the Bible clearly contradicts past lives and reincarnation -- "It is appointed unto man once to die", Hebrews 9:27)
- Seeing future events, solving murders, revealing the future fates of well-known personalities, etc (aka the “future life hypnotic therapy” that some practitioners are doing)
- “Memories” (by persons who have never had any contact with UFOs) of UFO abductions that conform in detail to those described by supposed genuine abductees
- Release from identity with one's own self to “merge with the universe”
- The feeling that they are everything and have no limitation upon what they can experience or become: i.e., God-consciousness
- Supposed transcendence of time and space “leaving pure awareness of the primal nothingness from which all manifested creation comes."
- Psychic experiences
- Satanic possession
How much of this is created by heightened suggestibility, unrestrained imagination, trance hallucination, or demonic intervention cannot be determined.
There have been no studies which have examined the effect of hypnotism the individual's resulting faith or interest in the occult.
It Overrides Human Will And Rational Thought
- Hypnotism can make a person do something against his will--what he would not do outside outside of the hypnotic state--by bypassing personal responsibility outside of objective, rational, critical choice
- Heightens a person's suggestibility to the point that the subject will believe almost anything the hypnotist tells him, even to the point of hallucinating.
- "Trance logic" undiscerningly accepts what would normally seem irrational, illogical, and incompatible
- Individuals can and do lie under hypnosis!
It Produces False Memories
- What is "remembered" under hypnosis has often been created, reconstructed, or enhanced during the state of heightened suggestibility
- After hypnosis, a person is unable to distinguish between a true recollection and what he imagined or created under the heightened suggestibility
- It’s just as likely to bring forth false impressions as true accounts of past events
- It’s more likely to contaminate the memory than to help a person remember what really happened
It Attempts To Alter Personal Beliefs and Faith
- Large Group Awareness Training seminars involve group sessions that attempt to alter participants' present way of thinking (mind set, world view, personal faith, etc.) through intense personal and group experiences and meetings that last numerous hours and take advantage of fatigue working together with much repetition, group pressure, and various psychological techniques, some of which attack personal belief systems and cause mental confusion.
It Causes Mental Confusion
"But I fear...
as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness,
so your minds may be corrupted
from the simplicity
that is in Christ.”
(2 Corinthians 11:3)
“God is not the author of confusion
but of peace.”
(1 Corinthians 14:33)
- The confusion technique, also a hypnotic device, is used used to disorient the subject to make him more responsive to cues
- "You give a person more information than they could possibly keep up with, you get them to question everything, you make them feel uncertain as a way of building up their motivation to attain certainty...”
It Duplicates Methods Used In Eastern Mysticism
- Hypnotic trance duplicates the experiences common under the stimulation of psychedelic drugs, TM, and other forms of Yoga and Eastern meditation
- The rituals for hypnosis, Zen, Yoga, and other Eastern healing methodologies are fundamentally the same (according to E. Fuller Torrey, a research psychiatrist, aligns hypnotic techniques with witchcraft)
- The fundamental principles of Yoga are, in many respects, similar to those of hypnosis; the central aim -- union with God -- is common to all of them and is the method by which it achieves the cure to physical and emotional sickness
- At varying depths of the hypnotic trance, patients describe experiences that are identical to the cosmic consciousness and self-realization induced by yogic trance
It Is Equally Demonic When Self-Induced
- Self-hypnosis can be as occult and demonic an activity as a trance directed by a hypnotist
- Those in a self-induced hypnotic trance ("self-hypnosis") may gain a certain amount of control and exercise some degree of choice, they, nevertheless, do not retain their normal means of evaluation of reality and rational restraint
- They continue on at a different level during the trance; by imagining one is leaving his body, one may move into the trance with the kind of hallucination and trance logic of really seeming to be out of the body
- A medical doctor, teaching a class in self-hypnosis, instructed his students to go into a hypnotic trance, leave their bodies, and then go back in to explore various parts of the body
It Is Warned About In The Bible
- The Bible speaks out strongly against all practices of false religion and the occult.
- God desires His people to turn to Him in need, not to those who practice sorcery, divination, or enchantment.
- God warns His people about following after mediums, wizards, enchanters, charmers, and those who have a familiar spirit (Deuteronomy 18:9-14)
- Hypnosis, as it is practiced today, may very well be the same as what is identified as "enchantment" in the Bible (Lev. 19:26 KJV).
It Shifts Faith And Worship From God To Man
- It began as part of the occult and false religion
- In hypnotism, faith is shifted from God and His Word to the hypnotist and his technique
- If hypnosis generates any form of faith and worship not directed toward the God of the Bible, any person who subjects himself to hypnotism may be playing the harlot in the spiritual realm. (See Lev. 19:26,31; 20:6,27; Deut. 18:9-14; 2 Ki 21:6; 2 Chron. 33:6; Isa. 47:9-13; Jer. 27:9.)
It Operates On Deception
- Hypnotism operates on the basis of imagination, illusion, hallucination, and deception
- Jesus warned His followers about deception
- After a person has opened his mind to deception through hypnosis, he may become even more vulnerable to other forms of spiritual deception
It Is No Way A Science
- “Christians who call hypnotism ‘scientific’ explain why they also recommend that it be performed only by a Christian. If hypnosis is science indeed, why the added requirement of Christianity for the practitioner?”
- There is no agreed-upon scientific explanation of exactly what hypnosis is
- There is a scarcity of adequate long-term studies of those who have been hypnotized
It Makes The Promises of A False God
Hypnotism blends right into today's landscape of promises of...
- Self-fulfillment
- Self-mastery
- Personal well-being
- Quick fixes for problems of living
- Union with God
- Life-transforming results
“Everyone who looks up to [Jesus],
trusting and expectant,
will gain a real life, eternal life.”
(John 3:15)
“This is how much God loved the world:
He gave his Son, his one and only Son.
And this is why:
so that no one need be destroyed;
by believing in him,
anyone can have a whole and lasting life.”
(John 3:16)
It Is The Work Of The Devil
"The thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
--A Picture Of Satan--
- Is a liar who fills the world with lies. “He was a killer from the very start. He couldn't stand the truth because there wasn't a shred of truth in him. When the Liar speaks, he makes it up out of his lying nature and fills the world with lies.” “When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." (John 8:44b) He is described as mischevious, sly and taking advantage of us (2 Corinthians 2:11). He “plays to the gallery of those who hate the truth that could save them.” (2 Thesalonians 2)
- Convinces us God’s Word is a lie and his promises are true. "The devil works to deceive us and convince us that his promises are true and God's Word is a lie. Jesus said that the devil 'was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies' (John 8:44). Don't ever take Satan lightly!"~Billy Graham
- Perverts the Scripture. “For the second test the Devil took him to the Holy City. He sat him on top of the Temple and said, ‘Since you are God's Son, jump.’ The Devil goaded him by quoting Psalm 91: ‘He has placed you in the care of angels. They will catch you so that you won't so much as stub your toe on a stone.’" (Matthew 4:6)
- Dresses up as something beautiful. “Satan does it all the time, dressing up as a beautiful angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:14)
- Is wicked, evil and malicious. (1 John 2:3, Job 1:9, Job 2:4)
- Is fierce and cruel. (Luke 8:29, 9:39, 42; 1 Peter 5:8)
- Hates you. "If you are a Christian, Satan hates you because he lost what you now have, and that is eternal life with Jesus Christ in heaven forever! If you are not a Christian, he still hates you, and will try to trick you into not believing and accepting Jesus Christ into your heart."~Billy Graham
- Claims to be God. The Antichrist/Anarchist will “take over every so-called god or altar, [clear] away the opposition [and] set himself up in God's Temple as ‘God Almighty’”--whose “power and signs and miracles are fake, evil sleight of hand that plays to the gallery of those who hate the truth that could save them.” That same “spirit of anarchy” is “now at work.” (2 Thesalonians 2)
- Tries to stop God’s work. Satan’s main goal is to stop God's work wherever it is taking place. "To accomplish this he schemes and works every way he can, and he is behind all the evil that takes place in the world. His name—Satan—literally means "Adversary"—and that is what he is: our adversary."~Billy Graham
- Turns us against God and to ourselves. Satan’s primary technique is to get us to turn against God, reject him, affront him and (whether we realize or not) curse him in our hearts and set up our own will as rule and our own glory at the end of our actions. Basically, turn from the worship of God to the worship of self; love ourselves above God--in opposition to God and with contempt of God. This self-worship and self-love is the core of the sin problem and the gateway to all iniquity. Sin is what happens when we replace the love and will of God with the love and will of Self.
- Is proud and blinds us with conceit. (1 Timothy 3:6)
- Forces people to run his errands. (2 Timothy 2:26)
- Opposes God’s work--and gets us to go against God’s purposes. “[Joshua] was standing before God's Angel where the Accuser showed up to accuse him. Then God said to the Accuser, ‘’I, God, rebuke you, Accuser! I rebuke you and choose Jerusalem.’” (Zechariah 3:1) “I, Paul, tried over and over to get back [to you], but Satan stymied us each time.” (1 Thesallonians 2:18; Ephesians 2:2)
- Hinders the gospel. “When anyone hears news of the kingdom and doesn't take it in, it just remains on the surface, and so the Evil One comes along and plucks it right out of that person's heart.” (Matthew 13:19)
- Blind’s unbeliever’s minds to the truth and the gospel of Jesus. “For the god of this world has blinded the unbelievers' minds [that they should not discern the truth], preventing them from seeing the illuminating light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ (the Messiah), Who is the Image and Likeness of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:4, Amplified)
- Figures out ways to lure unbelievers (and believers) into his trap/trip us up. “The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping.” (1 Timothy 3:7, 2 Timothy 2:26, 1 Peter 5:8).
- Holds unbelievers captive. (2 Timothy 2:26)
- Is a sheep stealer. "If a person climbs over or through the fence of a sheep pen instead of going through the gate, you know he's up to no good - a sheep rustler! *The shepherd walks right up to the gate. The gatekeeper opens the gate to him and the sheep recognize his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he gets them all out, he leads them and they follow because they are familiar with his voice. They won't follow a stranger's voice but will scatter because they aren't used to the sound of it...I am the Gate for the sheep. All those others are up to no good - sheep stealers, every one of them. But the sheep didn't listen to them. I am the Gate. Anyone who goes through me will be cared for - will freely go in and out, and find pasture. *A thief [Satan] is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of. I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd puts the sheep before himself, sacrifices himself if necessary. A hired man is not a real shepherd. The sheep mean nothing to him. He sees a wolf come and runs for it, leaving the sheep to be ravaged and scattered by the wolf. He's only in it for the money. The sheep don't matter to him. *I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep and my own sheep know me. In the same way, the Father knows me and I know the Father. I put the sheep before myself, sacrificing myself if necessary.” (John 10)
