I Do Not Want You to Be Unaware

“For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.” (1 Corinthians 10:1-5 ESV)

Paul was speaking here of the time that the Israelites were rescued from slavery in Egypt and were led by Moses into the wilderness, where they wandered for 40 years before a remnant of them were able to go into the land God had promised them. All that time, God was with them. All that time God was watching over them and protecting them and providing for them. And God is Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit, so Jesus Christ was with them, too. He was the spiritual rock from whom they all drank.

But with most of them God was not pleased, and they were overthrown in the wilderness. Why? Because some of them did not listen to God and to Moses. Some of them rebelled against the Lord. And some of them were engaged in idolatry and revelry and/or in sexual immorality and/or they were those who put Christ to the test and/or they were those who grumbled against God and his servant Moses. And so they all died in the wilderness, and they did not go to the promised land, nor did they enter God’s rest.

“Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
‘Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
where your fathers put me to the test
and saw my works for forty years.
Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
they have not known my ways.’
As I swore in my wrath,
“They shall not enter my rest.”’” (Hebrews 3:7-11 ESV)

We read all throughout the New Testament that the signs of those who are of genuine faith in Jesus Christ are that they have been crucified with Christ in death to sin, and raised with Christ to walk in newness of life in him, no longer to live as slaves to sin but as slaves to righteousness. So all who have believed in Jesus with God-persuaded faith are no longer to let sin reign in their mortal bodies. For if sin is what we obey, it results in death. But if obedience to God is what we obey, it ends in eternal life with God.

We also read throughout the New Testament that if we choose to keep living in sin, deliberately and habitually, that it won’t matter what professions of faith we have made in Jesus as Lord and Savior. For if sin is our practice, and obedience to God is not our practice, we will die in our sins, and we will not have eternal life with God because we chose our sinful lifestyles over God and over obedience to our Lord. And he will say to us, “I never knew you. Depart from me you workers of lawlessness” (see Matthew 7:21-23).

So, we have to take these Scriptures, and others like them, to heart. We cannot just skip over them as though they don’t exist. The Bible is clear on this subject. True faith in Jesus Christ results in us dying with Christ to sin and us now walking in obedience to his commands in holy living. But if we continue making sin our practice, and not righteousness, and not obedience to our Lord and to his NC commands, then we are not saved from our sins, and we do not have eternal life with God in heaven. Just the facts!

So don’t play with fate. Don’t think that just because you professed faith in Jesus Christ that now you are forgiven of all sins and so your sins no longer matter to God. And don’t assume that God is going to let you into his heaven on the basis of lip service only. As those who believe in Jesus we are to be his followers who obey him and his NC commands and for whom sin is no longer our practice. That doesn’t make us perfect people, but it means that sin is not what we practice, and obedience to God is what we practice.

Now none of this is of our own doing. Not one of us can even come to faith in the Lord Jesus unless God the Father draws us to Christ, i.e. unless he first persuades us as to his holiness and righteousness and of our sinfulness and of our need to die with him to sin and now walk in obedience to his commands. So all this comes from God and is empowered of God, and is not of the flesh of humans. So, when we obey God, we do so in his power as being led by his Spirit who guides us in how we are to live to please God.

“For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.” (Titus 2:11-14 ESV)

Create in Me a Clean Heart

By Keith Green
Based off Psalms 51

Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me
Create in me a clean heart, oh God
And renew a right spirit within me

Cast me not away from Thy presence, oh Lord
And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me
Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation
And renew a right spirit within me
