I am a writer, I am also pretty good with lyrics and I have alot to learn
when it comes to instruments but before I do I want to make sure I have the
voice for it as a start.

I want to be a singer but don't sound too good, I am inspired by the singer
Michael Barnes of RED, also Lacey Sturm from Flyleaf.

I am just starting out, I am afraid of practice where I am at
and I want to start writing my own songs but in the way
God would love.

What's a good way to improve my vocals
because I have little time to practice and when I do,
I am around people I don't want them to hear because they
are critical which hurts.

I been dreaming about doing something like this my
whole life, and I want to put my writing and
lyrics in my own voice.
So what would you recommend a good
technique to start?

Greetings @Visionary

So what would you recommend a good technique to start

The only place to start is with the Lord.
Put your dreams and ambitions aside and put Him first...ask the Lord to show you what His plans are for you.... trusting that He will direct your paths in life
Get immersed in prayer and in His word.....asking Him to lead you clearly
He will, whether it be in a musical career or otherwise.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths
Proverbs 3:5-6

just be sure and ask the lord were he needs you and how you are equiped to serve ..if its music go fore it... if not dig the ditches God says no matter what youre desires are and the waters will be blessed as long as youre in His will.....may the lord lead you as He intendeds to and may He find you an obediant servant of the Kingdom of God ...Bless you ...Rev

Hey Visionary!

I relate to your dreams of singing, I love writing music as well, and I also play guitar/drums/piano... etc.. but I have always had one thing holding me back... my voice!

One thing that got me over this, well progressed me to the point that I can hit notes/dont embarrass myself when I sing in front of people is by taking vocal lessons. They don't have to be expensive, mine were 50$ a month for one half hour lesson a week (pretty cheap when you think about it, $12.50 a lesson). It's embarrassing at first, especially if your vocal teacher has an amazing voice... like mine, so you feel really inadequate .. but if you find a good teacher (mine is a great christian lady I met through a church friend) they will be very encouraging and teach you the basics.

I'd say treat your voice like learning an instrument... it takes practice and instruction when you don't know where to start. Drums came naturally to me and I got them with a small amount of lessons (my first and primary instrument), but my vocals needed and still need major instruction. Some people are blessed with a great voice off the bat, or other skills (like me and drumming)... if your not blessed with these skills and you want them, you gotta learn them somewhere.

BTW Lacey Sturm is my FAVORITE artist, so super happy you are inspired by her and Red is an awesome band as well.

Keep Rockin out!
