The apostles of Christ Jesus, our Lord, all testified of Jesus, that he was the Christ who was to come, and who had come. John, particularly, spoke of Jesus of having been with God from the beginning, and that he was God incarnate (God in the flesh among us), who was fully God and fully human when he lived among them. Most of them had been with Jesus and had followed him and worked with him in ministry when he lived on the earth.

“That which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.” (1 John 1:3-4 ESV; cf. John 1:1-36)

“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” (1 John 1:5-10 ESV)

God is light. He is holy, righteous, pure, truthful, faithful and without sin. And in him is no darkness (no sin, no wickedness, no lies, no betrayals). So if we say that we have fellowship (participation, partnership, what is shared in common) with him, but while we walk (in conduct, in practice) in sin (wickedness, deceit, immorality), we lie and we do not practice the truth. For we cannot be in genuine fellowship with God and still make sin our practice.

Do you get what this is saying here? We cannot just make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ once in our lives and now all our sins are forgiven and now heaven is guaranteed us when we die, but regardless of how we live. For if we continue living in habitual sin, we lie if we say we are in a relationship with God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit. For we cannot be in genuine fellowship with God and still make sin our practice.

But if we walk (in conduct, in practice) in the light (truth, righteousness, in Christ, in his word, in obedience, faithfulness, moral purity and uprightness), as He is in the light, we have fellowship (partnership, participation) with God the Father and with Jesus Christ (God the Son), and with other believers in Christ who also are walking in the light and who have genuine biblical fellowship with the Lord. And the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.

Do you get what this is teaching? We are not cleansed from all sin on the basis of a profession of faith in the Lord Jesus. He cleanses of all sin on the basis of our walks of faith in obedience to our Lord in living morally pure, upright, godly, honest, and faithful lives to him, which necessitates that we are not walking (in conduct, in practice) in deliberate sin. And then we are in fellowship (partnership, participation) with him and with other like believers.

All of us are born with sin natures, and so all have sinned. But this doesn’t mean that God is okay with us continuing to live in sin and not in obedience to him. He is not. And if you are making sin your practice, i.e. your “go to,” deliberately and consistently, repeating the same sins over again, but then you claim that you are not sinning against the Lord, when you are, then the truth is not in you, and you are self-deceived, which is never an excuse.

And when this states here that if we confess our sins, that God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, this is not about the sinful pattern of “sin, confess, sin, confess” with no genuine repentance (no change in direction or habits). For “confess” has to do with agreeing with God about our sin, to speak to the same conclusion as the Lord about our sin, and to align with him in full agreement about our sin.

So, what does that look like? It is not saying to God, “I agree that I sinned, so forgive me,” and then go right back and do it again and again. For if we are aligned with God, and if we are in agreement with him, and if we speak to the same conclusion as him about our sin, then that will result in genuine repentance (change of mind, direction, and behavior) and we will now die with him to sin daily and walk daily in obedience to his commands.

For Jesus said that if anyone would come after him, he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin and to self) and follow (obey) him. For, if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and walk in obedience to our Lord’s NC commands, in the power of God, then we have salvation from sin and eternal life with God, provided that continue in those walks of faith.

The Lord’s Anointed

An Original Work / December 16, 2011
Based off Isaiah 61

The Spirit of the Sov’reign Lord on me;
Anointed to preach the Good News;
Sent me to bind up the brokenhearted;
Proclaim freedom for the captives.
He sent me to preach release for pris’ners
Who are walking in sin’s darkness;
Proclaim God’s grace to all men who’ll listen;
And tell them about God’s judgments;
Comfort all who mourn;
Give crowns of beauty;
Oil of gladness and thanksgiving.

They will be called oaks of God’s righteousness,
A planting of our Savior, God,
For the display of our Lord’s splendor, and
They will rebuild God’s holy church.
God will renew them, and will restore them,
And you’ll be called priests of the Lord.
You will be ministers of our God, and
You will rejoice in salvation.
The Lord loves justice;
He is faithful to
Reward those who are seeking Him.

I delight greatly in the Lord;
My soul rejoices in my Savior, God.
He has clothed me with His salvation,
And in a robe of His righteousness.
He has given me priestly garments to wear,
As the bride of Jesus Christ.
As the garden of our Lord and Savior,
He causes us to grow in Him.
He makes righteousness,
Praise, and thanksgiving
Spring up before all the nations.
