Chewing Gum for Heartburn - 30 Minutes of Chewing After a Meal Does Wonders!
Can chewing gum for heartburn really work? Apparently, yes. Several studies over the years have confirmed that chewing gum can actually help relieve heartburn! It's easy to do, it freshens your breath and now, it has added benefits.
According to the studies, chewing on a piece of gum (or two) actually helps neutralize acids that cause "characteristic burning sensations." The action of chewing pushes the fluids back into the stomach as well as flood the esophagus with alkaline saliva.
In one of the studies, 31 people were asked to fast for four hours and then fed a heartburn-inducing meal consisting of "two bars of full-fat cheddar cheese, green salad with two tablespoons of mayonnaise, 15 large chips, and half a pint of full-fat milk."
After the meal, some subjects were randomly picked to chew gum. After chewing the gum for half an hour, researchers found out that acid levels were much lower in people who chewed gum than people who didn't. Bottom line, chew gum after a meal and always keep some to share!
