“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.” (Ephesians 6:10-13 ESV)
When we believe in Jesus Christ to be our Lord (Owner-Master of our lives whom we now obey) and our Savior (our deliverer from our slavery to sin), the devil, who once had control in our lives, will fight against us. He will attack us. For he wants us back under his control. He wants us back living in sin and for self and not for our Lord Jesus. And so he is going to pull out and use every trick up his sleeve to try to get us back under his control.
He will try to tempt us to sin, or he will try to get us to accept his lies, or he will try to persuade us to compromise our faith and convictions, perhaps even trying to convince us that this is “for the greater good” and/or that it is being loving and kind towards others if we are not so “religious.” Or he will try to convince us that this is for our relaxation, for our entertainment and enjoyment, and that, after all, “wouldn’t God want you to be happy?”
Believe me, over the course of my 75 years of life, I have been faced with many of his tricks and schemes against me, and there were times when I got bamboozled into accepting less of what God has for me and more of what the world has for me. But then the Lord got me turned back around and I started again to follow Jesus with my life and to no longer compromise to fit in with the world or to please my flesh or the flesh of other humans.
And this path has not been easy. Satan has been fighting against me all the way. But my strength is in the Lord and in his strength and not in my flesh. And daily I must choose to obey the Lord and not my flesh, and to put on his armor, i.e. to put into practice every aspect of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ in the power, wisdom, and strength of God, and to not give the devil any openings to take me in a different direction. All glory to God!
“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:14-17 ESV)
Our faith in Jesus Christ is not lip service only. It is not a mere profession of faith in Jesus Christ whereby he forgives us all our sins and he promises us eternal life with him in heaven. It is walking by the Spirit so that we do not fulfill the passions of the flesh. It is studying the Scriptures in their context daily and then applying those biblical truths to our daily lives, in the power of God. It is believing the whole truth of God and putting it into practice.
And it is fighting against the lies of the enemy with the truth of God’s word. So we need to know what the Scriptures teach so that we can combat Satan’s lies with the truth, but not just intellectually, but by how we live our lives day in and day out in the power of God. And then we need to live holy and righteous and morally pure and upright lives in the power of God as we submit to his will and as we reject daily the lies of the enemy of our souls.
And we must be the people of God who are sharing the truth of the gospel with the people of the world. And Jesus said that if anyone would come after him, he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin and to self) and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to our lives of living in sin and for self, we will lose them for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and walk in obedience to our Lord, in his power, we have eternal life (see Luke 9:23-26)
“Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. (Ephesians 6:18-20 ESV)
Prayer is essential to a proper relationship with the Lord and to combatting the lies and tricks and schemes of the devil. But prayer is not just a daily routine of taking our requests to the Lord. Prayer is open communication between us and our Lord 24/7 to where our ears are attentive to hearing the voice of the Lord speaking to us at any time and to where we can converse with him any time of day or night even while doing household chores.
We should definitely be praying for the salvation of human souls, but then we should be out in the world sharing the gospel message with those lost souls, too. And we should be praying for our brothers and sisters in the Lord to walk worthy of God and to not get trapped by sin’s deceitfulness and by the temptations that the world has to offer us. And for those who are wandering from the faith, we should pray that God will bring them back.
And we should be praying for all who are committed to sharing the truth of the gospel with the people of the world and with the spiritually weak church, too. But we must make certain that “the gospel” they are teaching is the one taught by Jesus and by his New Testament apostles in their full biblical context. For not everyone who claims to be sharing the gospel is sharing the true gospel. Many are sharing an altered message intended to appease flesh.

“About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” Acts 16:25 NIV ‘84
Lord, I praise You forevermore.
You, my Savior, I now adore.
Hope in heaven awaiting me,
Because You died at Calvary.
I have been forgiven,
And I’m bound for heaven.
Jesus set me free from
All my sin, I say.
I will praise Him always!
Lord, I love You for all You’ve done:
Overcame death, my vict’ry won!
Jesus saved me, and now I’m free!
I rejoice in His love for me.
I will walk in vict’ry!
My sin is but hist’ry!
I am free to please Him
With my life today.
I will love Him always!
Lord, I thank You for giving me
A new life bought at Calvary.
Loving Jesus, I meet with Him.
Tender mercies now flow within.
Lord, I am so thankful;
Through my Lord, I’m able
To sit at His table;
Fellowship with Him.
I will thank Him always!
