IS it biblical to have to ask permision to visit another church?

I've been attending my local church for a year and a half now. It's of pentecostal denomination. There was this one time around when i first started attending where one of the youth told me how he didn't ask the pastor for permission to attend another church when he did and that it was wrong and how he had to ask God for forgiveness and it bothered me because i thought to myself "why does he have to ask the pastor for permission" but i just accepted and was eventually not bothered by it anymore. But now the question has risen again in my head because of a situation that has arisen and it seems to me like it's being controlling (in a bad way) plus i'm remembering multiple sermons where he would preach about how we are to obey the pastor, his authority and so on and that right there i know it's biblical to obey our pastors but it bothered me because he has said that already a couple times (i don't mean in the same sermon but on different days etc) and so i wondered why he seemed to have felt the need to preach on it multiple times and i mean whole sermons on the topic (he sometimes still preaches on it). I've been meaning to ask him why as i'm very close to him to see if He gives me a biblical answer but i thought of asking here first. What do you think? is it being controlling? it bugs me to think that we must stay locked to our congregation and only able to visit our other brothers & sisters with the pastors permission. This might be biblical and so it could just be my carnal rebellious nature at work here.

Of course we can let the pastor know, especially if we have responsibilities and cannot meet them, or he expects us to be there and we are not. But asking permission is something else. Christ is the Head of the Body not the pastor, he is only a member just as you are a member. A leg does not ask an arm for permission to move. It moves as directed by the Head. Also, every Christian belongs to the one and same church, so there is no such thing as visiting "another church". You would be visiting brothers and sisters in the same church.

At the same time care has to be taken not to be rebellious. When the people of Israel had no leadership, they did everything they thought was right in their own eyes. The church is not a democracy , the pastors have God's authority to govern the church. But this authority they have is not in their own right - it is delegated authority from God. So if a pastor is in God's presence and forbids a member to visit another place, they are God's representative at that time and should be obeyed. On the other hand if they are speaking from themselves, from a spirit of control , there is no reason to obey them.

I am so glad to hear you are questioning a pastor. Man is capable of telling lies either knowingly or, well if its unknowingly I dont suppose its a lie but it dont make it any less untrue. Man is not perfect. In addition to that there are all sorts of teachings of man and false doctorines that hold no biblical truth in them whatsoever, and even more teachings which have part truth and part un-truth. If you curse the part you curse the whole. There cant be a little lie in the truth. Having said that, some people actualy believe it and think they are teaching properly. This is why it is paramount we guard our hearts and never ever take the pastors word for it on what he preaches/teaches. We need to take what he said and verify it in the Holy Bible for ourselves. 2 Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
This passage is telling us to study for ourselves and not take someone "at their word" because after all it is actually Gods word. As a believer I think we should be praying to God with utmost sincerity for God to show us Truth in His Word because God cannot and will not ever tell a lie. I also recommend taking notes on preachers sermons and double checking in the bible in your own time to verify if there be truth to it or not.
I would also like to point out no where in the bible i can find does it say to obey your pastor, but it does say however to obey God.

So Samuel said:“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices,
As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,

The pastor should not be preaching that. His duty is to point people to Christ, not put focus on himself. The fact that he's preaching this to me, sounds suspicious.

First you need to go to the source. Ask your Pastor if this is truly the case about needing permission. Don't assume that what you were told was correct. There is more than one reason that this is possible. That is why talking with the Pastor is very important. Always keep in mind that what someone hears may not always be what is being said. When your hearing is as bad as mine, this can be a frequent occurrence. :baffle:

Now, if you're going as a representative of the church then I would have to say yes you need permission. You need to ask the Pastor, because the church you're visiting would assume you have his blessing, and whatever you say, has the authority of your Pastor and your church behind it.

However, as an individual, who just wants to go for whatever the reason to another church, then I would say, there is a big issue if you're being told you need permission to do so. I also attend a pentecostal church, and do not have any such limitations placed on me.

He himself has said that we must ask for permission to visit another church. When I say to go I don't mean that I would like to go as a representative of my pastors ministry or anything like that but just to visit and see other believers and get to know them, and see how they worship and there theology and so on, there was this one occasion where our two drummers had gone with our guitarist at the time to another congregation to teach them how to play the drums and other things regarding music simply for the purpose of helping them, teaching them and helping them worship God and the pastor was bothered cause they never asked the him (the pastor) for permission and that bothered me because it was very self fish and self centered for him because they were doing it to help other brothers and Ultimately for the glory of God but that never seemed to have crossed his mind at all. In the past he's had so many people leave his congregation that I think he's very insecure when it comes to that. One more example, one of my brothers in our congregation has a girlfriend but she attends another congregation, Sometimes his girlfriend's pastor would invite him to visit cause they get along and when my pastor found out he seemed to have gotten a bit upset and called that pastor and asked him "why they keep on inviting Bruce to that congregation without asking him (our pastor) for permission" then my pastor also asked "would you like it if I was to invite your members to visit our congregation without your permission" and that bothered me greatly but I didn't say anything. Btw that's the situation that I said arose on the first post that caused me to once again question that. I don't like the idea of being confined to one congregation and that's it, that's too controlling and I am the type that does not like being controlled especially in that manner. I've yet to ask him since I have not found the time to but I intend on asking and pressing him on that. With love of course but I'm also gonna make it known that I am bothered by it.

I don't get it, I hope this doesn't sound rude as I promise that I'm not but what does that have to do with my situation? My intentions are not to speak in front of the pulpit or anything like that, I just think it'll be cool to meet other believers in Christ as we are all apart of one body (one church). I don't intend on imposing the Pentecostal doctrine (word of faith) on anyone as I myself have begun to question all of that (in the past few months I've gotten this sort of obsession with testing all things to see if they hold up to scripture) and see many wrong things about that Movement though I myself have only ever been to Pentecostal denominations. It bothers me that this system of Christianity practiced in the churches I've been to and perhaps many other congregations here in the US seem very selfish and only about them and that congregation and I absolutely never hear about helping other believers outside of a particular congregation or out side a particular group of congregations. There doesn't seem to be any unity as it was in the early church. On the contrary there seems to be alot of división and I would imagine Christ is not the slightest bit pleased with that but very much grieved.

During the past year, I've been wanting to know more of Christ and what other services are preaching. All this to challenge me and to help strengthen my faith. Recently I was challenged by some who I care about and they said i was wrong for doing this. They couldn't understand why i wanted to attend different services, studies, self-help meetings and other churches (religions). I know this may seem like i lack some sort of faith, but I've learned a lot from these churches that have helped me in my relationship with Christ. I believe it is all about Jesus. I felt strongly in the Spirit about this when i started, but after what was said to me....I don't know anymore. It sucks having someone i care about say I'm wrong for doing this and that i may go to hell. I took offense to it and we argued. We patched things up, but i know they'll never understand this as I do and I'm not trying to force them to do so. It hurts and I'm wondering if i stop all this...will i be betraying something I felt the call me to.? I can explain more. I was research this topic and it lead me here. 1Peter 5:1 I WARN and counsel the elders among you (the pastors and spiritual guides of the church) as a fellow elder and as an eyewitness [called to testify] of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a sharer in the glory (the honor and splendor) that is to be revealed (disclosed, unfolded):
1Peter 5:2 Tend (nurture, guard, guide, and fold) the flock of God that is [your responsibility], not by coercion or constraint, but willingly; not dishonorably motivated by the advantages and profits [belonging to the office], but eagerly and cheerfully;
1Peter 5:3 Not domineering [as arrogant, dictatorial, and overbearing persons] over those in your charge, but being examples (patterns and models of Christian living) to the flock (the congregation). (AMP)

Glad you just jumped in there with this question that has been affecting your life. Brothers & Sisters in Christ Jesus here at TJ will I'm sure, endeavor to help you through, first, using their own experiences, and secondly, the most effective one and that is with prayer for you and the situation you now find yourself in.

Can I assume that you've already read the postings on this thread?
Do any of them touch close to home? Meaning, what you happen to be going through at the moment? Have any the suggestions given provided any light to you? Like talking with the Pastor of the Church that is currently your home church. If your Pastor is God fearing man and walking in His will for shepherding Jesus' Flock. Then he'll make time for you and seek what is best for you in your walk with the Lord.

As far as checking out the different religions, which you feel drawn to. May I ask to what purpose? If it's in the belief that you'd learn more about Jesus' from them. You're right. Didn't expect that did you The problem however is that what you'll probably learn about Jesus, won't be what's right and will likely be distorted. Take Islam, for example. You'll learn about how they see Jesus, which is neither correct historically or biblically in its entirety. What will you have gained then?

By your own admission in your bio you stated "I must admit that i'm not the example of a Christian". What exactly does that mean? Does it mean that your walk is not as it should be? That you know what you should doing, but you only do it now and again?

I bring this up because, by being influenced by how other religions see Jesus, and not having a solid foundation yourself. What you're opening yourself up to at the very least is confusion! Worse yet, will be doubt of the Gospel that you initially received! So, you'll probably be in worst shape then when you first came to the Lord!!! Not a good idea and might be a reason your friend doesn't understand.

Is it possible that you have questions still and the church that you are presently going to hasn't been able to answer them or pushes them aside like "Don't worry about it, because eventually it will come to you?" The latter part would mean that you've already met with the Ministry Team or better yet the Pastor and this is the advice that you've received. If so, then you probably are doing right seeking another church. A church that is unwilling to answer your questions, is one too question!!!! However, don't be seeking other religions, because the leadership in this one Christian Church has let you down. You'll just find yourself further from the truth. If you're looking for surety then like in most situations you find yourself. You should be going directly to the Source and asking God for guidance first and foremost!

There are so many unknowns here Brother Bryson for me to say for a certainty in what direction you should go. However, as I said before. If you haven't had that sit down with your Pastor. Then schedule a meeting with them. Praying up before you met, of course!

My first consideration in considering a different church would be -- does the pastor / leader teach the Bible as the Word of God. That Jesus Christ is the Son of God -- His death, burial and bodily resurrection from the dead. Do they believe in missions. Do they reach out into the community with salvation.

And another consideration would be -- is the preacher / leader a man or woman. Biblically a pastor / elder/ leader of a mixed group of adults is to be a man and a husband of one wife. A married man and with a family. Because another qualification is to have 'authority' of his own family. If his kids / teens are rebellious and they are allowed to be. Then the pastor might not be a good example for his congregation to follow. The congregation should be able to see his love shown to his wife and kids.

People Should be 'allowed' to go to any church they want to. No one should have to ask their pastor for permission to attend another church. I was going to a small church for a while and felt led to go to another church of same religious beliefs. Instead of just 'leaving' I Did go and share with him that I was going and why. He appreciated that I Did talk with him privately. He understood my need for a bigger church at that time.

And there are those who feel that once a particular church has been joined -- they are part of that church family until they die. Or if the pastor starts changing his preaching. Or the music director changes to a different style of worship.

Obviously we should go where the Lord leads us to, but a new Christian would not know how to be lead by the Holy Spirit to where the Lord wants them. Jumping from Church to Church happens a lot because were not exactly for sure if we are were we should be. One thing that all believers should know at any age is what their heart is telling them through the inner witness. When I got saved 40 years I stay away from the main stream Church, not because I wanted to, but because the Lord told me to. That does not mean I did not have fellowship with no one as I did have other believers, especially my wife, and her parents. Now I am connected to a small Church were I live that is not a particular denomination, but we all believe the same thing.

Curtis -- The Holy Spirit led the person to faith in Christ to be saved in the first place. A new believer is just as capable of following the leading of the Holy Spirit as a seasoned Christian. I'm thinking it's in Proverbs where everyone is encouraged to seek out Christians for Godly counsel when they feel the need to. Ask a Pastor or S. S. teacher or another Godly person you'd know to pray with you in regards to a decision that is felt to be important and needs prayer support. And then the person makes their own decision. The new Christian needs to know that God hears Their individual prayer // that they Can trust God's guidance.

Sometimes church hopping can be the result of having been transfered by a company to a different area and trying to find another good church might be difficult. But, in this day and age, chances are that a person would go on-line to find the church in their particular area. Or maybe they'd go visit various churches for a few weeks or so. Get the 'feel' of the church -- the one that 'feels' right -- is where they stay. And that Can be the prompting of the Holy Spirit.

only if what they are teaching is biblical, and the only way to know if it is biblical is to be in the word of God daily. For example I used to attend a catholic church, and not until I started reading the word of God for myself daily and searching and really studying did I realize I was not in the right place and left that church.

I recall one story a member of the church told me the head priest called the Monsignor had a meeting of the higher ups in our local church and told these men that they were all expected to donate 10,000 for a certain cause. Now that is not biblical at all, but these men shared a certain status among the local church and had a special relationship with the monsignor so.....

For me personally searching the word with all your heart might and soul and trusting in the Lord to bring you to a good church (you might already be there). But you really wont know what a good church is until you know the Lord by his word IMO

I pray you find a good spiritual home, that feeds you good spiritual food, with good fellowship.

I would say I would be a little concerned about any preacher constantly going on about his authority over you. God and his word are final authority on any and all matters.

In an assembly of believers, the most important people are the congregation not the pastor or it's leaders. If a pastor is being an "example" to the flock as Christ is shinning, and speaking through them then no one will want to go anywhere else.
Unfortunately a lot of leaders, and pastors consider what they do as way to make a living, which is a wrong motive to be in the ministry. The Bible tells us how leaders are suppose to act toward those who have been entrusted to their care.

1Peter 5:1 I WARN and counsel the elders among you (the pastors and spiritual guides of the church) as a fellow elder and as an eyewitness [called to testify] of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a sharer in the glory (the honor and splendor) that is to be revealed (disclosed, unfolded):
1Peter 5:2 Tend (nurture, guard, guide, and fold) the flock of God that is [your responsibility], not by coercion or constraint, but willingly; not dishonorably motivated by the advantages and profits [belonging to the office], but eagerly and cheerfully;
1Peter 5:3 Not domineering [as arrogant, dictatorial, and overbearing persons] over those in your charge, but being examples (patterns and models of Christian living) to the flock (the congregation). (AMP)

Always a joy to welcome another Brother in Christ Jesus to this online Community of Christian Believers.

Glad you just jumped in there with this question that has been affecting your life. Brothers & Sisters in Christ Jesus here at TJ will I'm sure, endeavor to help you through, first, using their own experiences, and secondly, the most effective one and that is with prayer for you and the situation you now find yourself in.

Can I assume that you've already read the postings on this thread?
Do any of them touch close to home? Meaning, what you happen to be going through at the moment? Have any the suggestions given provided any light to you? Like talking with the Pastor of the Church that is currently your home church. If your Pastor is God fearing man and walking in His will for shepherding Jesus' Flock. Then he'll make time for you and seek what is best for you in your walk with the Lord.

As far as checking out the different religions, which you feel drawn to. May I ask to what purpose? If it's in the belief that you'd learn more about Jesus' from them. You're right. Didn't expect that did you The problem however is that what you'll probably learn about Jesus, won't be what's right and will likely be distorted. Take Islam, for example. You'll learn about how they see Jesus, which is neither correct historically or biblically in its entirety. What will you have gained then?

By your own admission in your bio you stated "I must admit that i'm not the example of a Christian". What exactly does that mean? Does it mean that your walk is not as it should be? That you know what you should doing, but you only do it now and again?

I bring this up because, by being influenced by how other religions see Jesus, and not having a solid foundation yourself. What you're opening yourself up to at the very least is confusion! Worse yet, will be doubt of the Gospel that you initially received! So, you'll probably be in worst shape then when you first came to the Lord!!! Not a good idea and might be a reason your friend doesn't understand.

Is it possible that you have questions still and the church that you are presently going to hasn't been able to answer them or pushes them aside like "Don't worry about it, because eventually it will come to you?" The latter part would mean that you've already met with the Ministry Team or better yet the Pastor and this is the advice that you've received. If so, then you probably are doing right seeking another church. A church that is unwilling to answer your questions, is one too question!!!! However, don't be seeking other religions, because the leadership in this one Christian Church has let you down. You'll just find yourself further from the truth. If you're looking for surety then like in most situations you find yourself. You should be going directly to the Source and asking God for guidance first and foremost!

There are so many unknowns here Brother Bryson for me to say for a certainty in what direction you should go. However, as I said before. If you haven't had that sit down with your Pastor. Then schedule a meeting with them. Praying up before you met, of course!

Yes, I have set up an appointment with my head pastor to explain what I'm doing and to seek some guidance and prayer. My pastor has never been the type to kick anyone out or reject anyone. She is a loving momma and desires that our church grows together in a relationship with Christ. I'm sure she would have some feedback for me - some i will like and some i won't. Maybe this is a pride issue. I'm not certain tho.
In my bio, i mean that i don't always say the right thing or my beliefs and thoughts are not always aligned with Christs. I still tend to judge others and myself. I went through a season of being mad with God. I still use some foul language and still have character defects that I'm working on with God. I still believe in God but i doubt myself. Sometimes i feel i will never be what God wants me to be. This all comes from my past life. I've had many ups and downs in my life; and many highs and lows of faith. Days when i wasn't afraid to share my faith with anyone and day of not wanting anything to do with God. I believe that God is breaking and molding me to trust in Him, fully! Lately I've bee proclaiming Colossians 2:15 over my mind and heart.
I guess a question i would have to ask you is, have you ever felt that you disagreed with anything that a pastor has said or anyone else in that matter? I have. Not to where i would go and argue, but from a place of what I've experienced and what others have experienced. And maybe they aren't wrong, they just don't understand yet or perhaps i haven't reached that level of faith. I know God knows my heart. I come from a life of drugs and alcohol and I'm a part of another spiritual fellowship of men and women. I attend both regular because i that is my relationship with Christ and that's what i was taught, relationship - that Christ wants to know me personally and intimately. So I started to think, what if it doesn't matter what religion you practice, as long as you have that relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. That made sense to me. Of course if i'm wrong on anything, God has always corrected me. With this, i felt encouraged because this made it easier to talk with those who didn't believe at all. This was also reinforced by a gentleman i met in a group study who was very knowledgeable in Christ, the bible and the way he carried himself. I later found out that he was Catholic. That shocked me. I commented on that and he took no offense. I told him what i believed and he agreed with me. That we weren't perfect and we were free to worship and love God in our own way based on our relationship with Him.
Prior to this, I had bible studies with a friend when i was deep in my addictions. I started talking about different religions and i was digging deep in saying they were wrong and why couldn't see the truth. My friend commented, well that could be their way of loving God. That struck me making sense. We started talking more about how it applies to relationship and that day we were both shocked as to what we had stumbled on. That everyone is entitled and free to have a relationship with God and is free to worship Him as they please, so who am i to judge them. I have my own relationship with Christ and it may not be perfect but that is between Him and i. I still have church friends come up and correct me or who aren't afraid to speak into my life when im not on the right road. Which i'm grateful for. Make no mistake here, i mean the one true God.
Before all that, my spiritual mentor, he has been a true blessing in my life. The one who taught me what relationship, who led me to Christ and who baptized me. We were talking one day about other religions, when i was young in my faith, so i was talking mad trash about them. He stopped and he told me a story. He does jail and prison visits in our state and one day when he was leaving, he held the door open for someone who was dressed very nice. They started talking and the gentlemen said he was a Jehovah's Witness and my friend said he was a Christian. The gentlemen said to him, "Well you aren't dressed to be a representative of our Lord and Savior." He was wearing a regular shirt and jeans. Now, my mentor is a great man of God who does many things for the church, the community and his family. He is my brother in Christ. After this, my friend was angry towards him and didn't speak to that guy for the next few weeks. He prayed to God about it because he knew he was going to keep seeing him and it was eating him up. He said God told him to just love him. The next time he spoke, he asked about his family and didn't make it about religion but simply got to know the guy. they still have a connection to this day. In my eyes now, i see this as fellowship.
My nephew is a Baha'i. They believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and that we are all children. He and I have had similar walks in life. He was a Christian long before i was but got lost in the world. I returned with Baha'i. Of course their teachings are different from what i believe and what i was taught and i don't agree but the changed that has been brought in his life is truly a miracle. So if this helps him and keeps him from going back to that old life, than by all means, yes! I'm going to support him. I believe a seed was planted and it is good to see him on fire. Sometimes I'm jealous because i was once on fire like he was and i want that back.
Anyway, I started visiting other churches because i had friends there and they invited me and i liked the teachings. Things that made sense, things that i challenged and that challenged me; things that i didn't agree with but i believe that if I'm not challenged than I'm going to be stuck in my own little world of being right and not opened minded. In recovery, we are challenged to be opened minded to change. I'm not saying I'm open to changing churches or different faiths or religions, I'm open to the fact that if its about Jesus, than I'm for it, but i still guard my heart and mind. I know because i can feel it in the Spirit; that little tug or pinch on the heart. I've attended Christian services , LDS services and Pentecostal services. I don't always agree with what is said, but I've learned some good things from each service and have applied it to my relationship with Christ and it is amazing to see others from different churches committed to what they believe and that inspires me to strengthens my relationship. I don't go if i'm not right in my heart about it. if i feel judgemental or my desires aren't fixed on Christ about it.
Every church I've been too, everyone has been supportive and amazed that a Christian would even attempt this. My spiritual mentor commended me but tells me to be careful. I guess a desire is to break walls. To see the body of Christ organized and that's one thing i'm questioning myself. Because what if each religion is a body part that performs a different function? it shouldn't be about attendance numbers but the fact that the church is reaching out and leading people to a relationship with Christ. I've been meaning to speak to my pastor about this and when my friend disagreed that shook me. probably because i had gotten good feed back and this was the first negative reply. i'm not sure but that made me want t set up an appointment with my pastor and i've got on. so i will prepare my heart and seek the Lord on this further until that time.
I wondered what others here think of this or if they've experienced any of the sort. I can explain more or as to much of my knowledge and influence. Thank you and God Bless
