If Jesus is God in flesh, why did He not inherit original sin?

by Matt Slick

If all people have original sin and Jesus was a human being, then didn't Jesus need to have had a sin nature?

Before we can answer this question, we need to know what the term "original sin" means. This is a term used to describe the effect of Adam's sin on his descendants (Rom. 5:12-14). Specifically, it is our inheritance of a sinful nature from Adam. The sinful nature originated with Adam and is passed down from parent to child. We are by nature children of wrath (Eph. 2:3). So, if we inherit our sinful nature from our parents, then Jesus, who had Mary as a parent, must have had a sin nature. Right? Not necessarily. I believe that the sin nature is passed down through the father. Let me explain.

Some Bible commentators, with whom I agree, hold the position that the sin nature is passed down through the father. Support for this position is found in the fact that sin entered the world through Adam, not Eve. Remember, Eve was the one who sinned first. However, sin did not enter the world through her. It entered through Adam. Rom. 5:12 says, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned." The concept behind this is called Federal Headship. This means that a person (a father) represents his descendants. We see this concept taught in Heb. 7:9-10, "And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him." We see in Hebrews that Levi, a distant descendant of Abraham, is said to have paid tithes to Melchizedek when Abraham was the one offering the tithes, not Levi. What this means is that there is biblical support for the idea that the sin nature was passed down through the father. Since Jesus had no literal, biological father, the sin nature was not passed down to Him. However, since He had a human mother, he was fully human but without original sin. Jesus has two natures: God and man. Col. 2:9 says, "For in Him dwells all the fullness of deity in bodily form." Jesus received His human nature from Mary, but He received His divine nature through God the Holy Spirit. Therefore, Jesus is both God and man. He was sinless, had no original sin, and was both fully God and fully man.

I dont believe theres such thing as original sin :)
what happened to adam and eve was that their eyes opened and they become to know good and evil. It was not their flesh or human blood line that was somehow defiled. it was sin , the knowledge of how to sin, that entered the world.
still babies are born sinless. But we can sin unlike adam who couldnt at first sin at all, before the fall.

i think genesis alone points to this spiritual change of state rather than physical:

Gen 3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

Gen 3:10-11 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. (11) And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

their single act of sin lead to complete change in their minds. They saw they were naked.

if adam and eve had not sinned peope still today would not know different between good and evil nor that they are naked. Nor could experience shame of nakedness. This is just one example , every other sin followed to mankind due to this opening of eyes.

However I believe reason death reigned is because all have sinned not just because adams sin is counted against them but the fall that made humans vulnerable to sin is inducing people to sin.

Rom 5:11-14 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. (12) Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (13) (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. (14) Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

But Jesus never sinned and that's why He overcame death.

Heb 2:16-17 For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. (17) Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.

He DID of course! The Gospel would be jibberish otherwise.

Jesus inherited everything all mankind inherits, as He was totally a man. He was tempted to sin just like we are. No different. Otherwise He didn't "Overcome" anything and there was no "Victory" and the Gospel of "Salvation" from sin and death is a sham. The "Godliness" of Jesus wasn't confirmed until He finished Living His Godly Life. Not with us either. He first had to overcome His own sin prone nature of course.

After all, it is from MAN that resurrection and salvation comes from, since it was from MAN that sin originally came from;

(1Co 15:21)
For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

It wouldn't mean anything at all if "God" was raised from the dead without being a MAN. Because then we'd have no relationship to Him.

His sin nature and all temptations as a result, He inherited from His mother.

(Heb 4:15)
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Notice the 'triple' affirmative, "He also Himself Likewise" in this verse;

(Heb 2:14)
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
There was "no difference" of Jesus the man than any of the rest of us.

That is why He came as He did, as a MAN. Only THEN could He accomplish this. Jesus had to die to his own flesh and blood heritage of "sin nature" that tempted him to sin. Something only a Man could do empowered by Christ in Him.

What He inherited from His FATHER is what made this possible, which was "To do the Will of Him who sent me".

(Joh 4:34)
Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

NOT HIS OWN WILL. But the will of His Father.

(Luk 22:42)
Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

Unless we know this and understand Jesus' relationship to His Father like this, we will never comprehend our present relationship of dying to ourselves as Jesus did, and then letting His Will Be Done In Us, Not Our Will.

That is why it is imperative to know and understand receiving the Person of Jesus into us, so that HE CAN OVERCOME SIN IN OUR LIVES EXACTLY AS HE OVERCAME SIN IN HIS LIFE. This is "WHO" the HOLY SPIRIT is.

Christ Glorified and Come into us, doing the "work of the Father" in us begatting us "Sons of God"
Pretty cool huh :)

Hope this helps :)

Peace in Christ
