"An English church will create an “educational area” for the former slave trader who became a clergyman and abolitionist, and wrote the hymn “Amazing Grace”, after the Church of England had ordered a Black Lives Matter-style review of all of its memorials for “contested heritage”.

John Newton was an eighteenth-century former slave ship captain and slave trade investor who went on to become ordained as a Church of England vicar in 1764, becoming avidly opposed to the slave trade, and even forging a friendship with the well-known British abolitionist William Wilberforce. It was while leading his flock at the church of St Peter and St Paul in Olney that he penned what came to be known as the hymn, “Amazing Grace”."

We have let sin in our churches and selves tiny bites at a time excusing it as culture or something else anything but sin. Cancer starts as a single cell .

We should be enjoying the forgiveness that "Amazing Grace" was written about . Thank You Lord for your servant John Newton.

There is so much that many do not know, and a lot, Our Governments have well hid, but plainly insight. Hide history, you hide shame, if you hide shame, you hide the need to "repent" that needed to be repent of" True repentance, produce works, No repentance, there will not be any 'REPARATIONS". Because reparations produce guilt and true guilt produce True "Repentance" for works without Faith is dead:pensive: Show me your Faith by your Works and I will show you my Faith by my works. especially in these USA. For many don't even know about The 400 plus pages of "The Kerner Commission" the session held in Washington D.C. 1967 under "President Johnson. It made white men of that commission cried like babies after they had done the report and presented to our GOVERNMENT THE solution to the endanger future of THE BLACK RACE, In which is Orchestra by The White race fuel by white racism with support of the Federal Government that the Majority of The Black race shall for ever remain in "Poverty" and undereducated is so deep they can never rise or forever recover, But only a few will , but only to crush those ones, who can't of their own race., and to satisfy those who feel "empathy". for there down fall.

The government could have avoided the flight of racial injustices and so much "Prejudices" between the "white and Black race" a long time ago! When I was in school, my school books was from 30 to 40 years older., Than White America!. Issue by the Federal Government. "Separated but Equal"! it is so much that happen to our generations in the pass, i still have nightmares even in Christ! If the world had not treated HIM so BAD, I might not had made it! I thank GOD, HE punish HIS OWN SON, and wrote it in a BOOK and Gave Me The Ability to read. For they didn't even wanted me to read, For they would snatch the books out of my Grandmothers hand and tear the pages and throw them in the mud. Out dated 1900 century books, Title: "Little Black SamBO" goes to school!

In Memorial: Tulsa, Ok. 1921 100 years ago.

From what i remember of the little books Sambo was East Indian.

From what i remember of the little books Sambo was East Indian.
The book's original illustrations were done by the author and were simple in style, and depicted Sambo as a Southern Indian or Tamil child. Little Black Sambo’s success led to many counterfeit, inexpensive, widely available versions that incorporated popular stereotypes of "black" peoples. One example was a 1908 edition illustrated by John R. Neill, best known for his illustration of the Oz books by L. Frank Baum.[4] In 1932, Langston Hughes criticised Little Black Sambo as a typical "pickaninny" storybook which was hurtful to black children, and gradually the book disappeared from lists of recommended stories for children

n 1942, Saalfield Publishing Company released a version of Little Black Sambo illustrated by Ethel Hays.[6] In 1943 Julian Wehr created an animated version.[7] During the mid-20th century, some American editions of the story, including a 1950 audio version on Peter Pan Records, changed the title to the racially neutral Little Brave Sambo.

The book is beloved in Japan and is not considered controversial there. Little Black Sambo (ちびくろサンボ, Chibikuro Sanbo) was first published in Japan by Iwanami Shoten Publishing in 1953. The book was an unlicensed version of the original, and it contained drawings by Frank Dobias that had appeared in a U.S. edition published by Macmillan Publishers in 1927. Sambo was illustrated as an African boy rather than as an Indian boy. Although it did not contain Bannerman's original illustrations, this book was long mistaken for the original version in Japan. It sold over 1,000,000 copies before it was pulled off the shelves in 1988, when The Association to Stop Racism Against Blacks launched a complaint against all major publishers in Japan that published variations of the story, which, in turn, triggered self-censorship among those publishers.[8][9] In 2005, after copyright of the 1953 Iwanami Shoten Publishing edition of the book expired, Zuiunsya reprinted the original version and sold more than 150,000 copies within five months' time, and Kodansha and Shogakukan, the two largest publishers in Japan, published official editions. These are still in print, and as of August 2011, an equally controversial "side story" for Little Black Sambo, called Ufu and Mufu, is being sold and merchandised in Japan. The reprinting caused criticism from media outside Japan, such as The Los Angeles Times.[9]

I remember when a restaurant, a burger and fried food joint, opened near me called "Sambos" so-called based on the names of the owners Samuel & Bohnert. It shut down before it even opened up after the neighborhood blasted it with rocks, broke every window, trashed the inside, and tried to burn it down. Then a few years later a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) opened up with Colonel Sanders's racist face (the man who stole the recipe from a black woman) on the sign and on the windows. It's a huge hit and still in operation today in the very same neighborhood where Sambos tried to operate. Go figure.

Thread title doesn't match the news story. Nobody is looking to cancel amazing grace or the history of John Newton.

The Church of England is right to review its monuments etc. Some pretty grisly characters managed to get themselves honoured in churches in the past.

I thought every "True Christian" knew the history of the Hymn "Amazing Grace", pen by John Newton. My mother told me that my earthly father used to Love to hear me sing "Amazing Grace" before I Delivered a Sermon. She said he said, it did something to him when i song that song, and how I song it.

And many times I have before a "White Congregation", I would prepare them how a wanted to sing a "Introduction song" before I give the message. Especially A hymn pen, by "Charles Wesley" brother of "John Wesley" one of the founders of the "Methodist" denomination. And when I would begin, it would seem like an Old
Negro Spiritual, traveling through the space of Time, And the Holy OIL, would pour on Our heads, And the tears would begin to flow, "Father I Stretch My Hands to Thee, for no other Help I know, If thou withdraw thyself from me Oh, whither Shall I go"

[Down]
"
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.
For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion.
How shall we sing the LORD'S song in a strange land?
If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.

If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy!

Sometimes I do wonder, what have christians been reading through out the years. Especially Biographies, " William Wilberforce.", Newton, John and Charles Wesley, Whitefield, Knox, Bunyan, Nix, Luther, Calvin, Edwards, Beza, Farel, Wycliffe, and a host of Puritans both female and males. these people has stood the time.
Now, no "Prosperity" books, no Joe Osteen, no TD Jakes, No healing books, no books on Tongues, No books on The rapture, No books on Heaven, no books on hell, No Pentecostal, no Jehovah's Witness, no Mormon Books in my library, and No Beth Moore, and Absolutely no "Hocus- Pocus" books. And No; Rick Warren, "The Purpose Driven Life"! not in my house, not in my House!

Always had a Bible, old KJ. When I came to faith I then got a NASB and Strongs Concordance, then one of the first books I got was CH Spurgeon's Advice for Seekers. After I read through it (loved it) it was the first book I gave away to someone else to whom I witnessed and asked them to do the same. And the beat goes on.

The song, Amazing Grace, is one of the most beautiful and Biblically sound gospel songs around. "The Old Rugged Cross" is another one.

The 'cancel culture' stuff is ridiculous and dangerous.

I grew up with the KJV because I'm thinking it's the only Bible we had. It was either in Navy Blue or Black. And with Scoffield's notes.

Many years later, we visited my older daughter and her family -- she'd gotten an NIV. I started looking through it and was impressed by the paragraph vs verse by verse style. It was in the more up-to-date English which made more sense.
And even later -- a pastor was showing the congregation his NKJV. I though he meant he'd gotten a new Bible. So he told us about the New KJV. The KJV was written in the King's English. OVer the years' the English language has changed. So come some of the changed in the wording. Especially in the Old Testament. The doctrine is still very accurate.

Curious @JerryfromMass -- why did you change from the old KJ to NASB upon being saved?

I've simply gone from KJV to NKJ. Also have the old NIV. Also have the ESV, but don't really read it. One of the pastors of a church I don't go to any longer Did preach from that.

Hi Sue, I liked the NASB for its easy to read modern American style English. However, after some study on translation accuracy, I learned that the NASB was as much a literal translation as the KJ is a literal translation, but that the NASB omitted some questionable versus. I mostly use the KJ, but also enjoy the Bible app on my cell phone which gives me many more versions. I enjoy reading the ESV, NKJ, Young's, and the KJ on my app. I mostly avoid paraphrased Bibles.

I have read His Biography in my younger years, and watch many stories about him. It was his pain and sorrow, that lead him to write a song of a "Wretched" man as he. Brokenness, pain, tears, and how could GOD could save a man like him, how he had treated "human beings" those who had been created in "The Image GOD", men women and children, Even Murder and cast them into the Sea! When you sing this Song, it brings pain and sorrow and tears! "A God who saved a Wretch Like ME", If a person cannot see the Wretchedness of ones own self, it is only a "song of beauty" and nothing else. Like my mother told me, my father used love to hear me sing that song before i give a message. It was the way I song it. I song, through Brokenness pain, a great sinner, and angry of how this world had treated me by the color of my skin. Now Here is "John Newton" in tears, broken from all the darkness of the Black he had done, A broken man, as was Saul, struck down by light, Saul, Saul, why are you Persecuting Me! Who are you LORD! I'm Jesus! "So much as you have done this to the "Least" of one of These You have done it to ME! "A Biblical Motif"

If there have not been any "Wretchedness" in your life that you need to be "Repented" of, you need not "Jesus" who is "The Amazing Grace":pensive:

Regarding the NAS / KJV -- I'd heard that one is more verse by verse and the other phrase-by-phrase.?! That which I find interesting is that there are KJ onlyists as well as NAS onlyists. It IS interesting to compare wording in various versions. :)

Yes, it is. If only we had the original autographs. I'm afraid even if we did have the original writings, there would still be a variety of interpretations over words and phrases. LOL. Trust the Lord our God with all HE has promised. Amen.

In a more precise explanation.
I did study Translations and why, in the early 1980's. It was a required course.
That is why understanding this chart. I might didn't like it, in school "; but The Plymouth Brethern" if you don't Like it, you are not going to pass this grade. And you will like it after you fail! LOL

If we Did have the originals -- there are those who would probably worship them instead of the Author OF them.

Yes, to your other comment.

From my recollection the first Cancel Culture appeared as the Nazis world agenda. Then ISIS in the 21st century. Others marked history I'm sure but, those are two that come immediately to mind.

"Those who don't learn from their history are condemned to repeat it."

I think Fascist censorship intent on erasing history " they" disapprove are a new breed of terrorist.

The past exists. It is to be a lesson, not erased because weak governments or psyche's aren't mature enough to face what the world's ancestors have done.

Now is this not strange, not to long ago I was mentioning about in the early 1070's a certain political party in our country, began a stealth movement to erase our history. Through out the years I have question my children and others to see how much history do they know. Even my young grandkids, and I have notice College grads and U.S. Senators, Representatives, and Governors. Don't even know the difference between a "Continent" and a country. And some don't know who the 16th president of These United States. And they sure do not know who "Paul Revere" or Who The Continental Army was. and "Davy Crockett" is out of the question. Ask one college Professors would she vote for "Martin King Jr." in the next election she said, she was thinking about, She heard he was a good man.:eyes: Ask one person have they ever heard of "The MinuteMan" Not really, but i think so. He delivers to you in a minute. He almost have it right.

Do any remember in the early 1970's why they created "Robotics"?
Answer:
So they could eliminate the work force! To eliminated the labor force. Robotics do not take breaks, Robotics do not take vacations, Robotics do not complain or write grievances or go on strikes. Robotics don't need "Blue Cross and Blue Shield", Robotics don't need "Delta Dental", Robotics don't need a "Pension Plan" Now in comes 401's. Computerization main purpose was to "Eliminate" the human work force, to increase "Profitability" TopLine. It worked, in come "AutoLease", purppse to increase "profitability". From 2 to 4 year payment for ownership of an "Automobile". To make it near Impossible to purchase a new car . A New car payment with the Insurance became larger than a House Mortgage. My two older Children was born under "Blue Cross and Blue Shield Master Medical " Private rooms if you wanted one. No deductibles 1972, "1975,1979". Now here comes the other 1989, 1990,1991, "Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Empire New York" monthly payments "$22.00 a month. the day they was born I didn't have to pay a dime! No deductibles.

The here comes "NATA" President Clinton and all of the Republicans and Democrats. Health Insurance $900.00 plus a month, plus $10,000 a year family deductible before anything kick in. And repeat at the beginning of The nest following year!

Now that is "history for you" that they want you to forget! Talking about the Government Creating more Jobs! :joy: as long as They Keep Americans smoking Herb, drinking beer, Nascar, basketball, and eating chicken, and smoking Ribs and "Red $4000,00 Gym shoes in The Pulpit" When "Rip VAN Winkle" wakes up, He would have slept through a great "Revolution":eyes: Now you are talking about a sure "Cultural" shock! The Only one that THINKS he is getting Rich is the one Selling "PopCorn".

Everything is this life that you know of is Being Threatened, It is not going to get better, it is growing worst on a alarming pace. From the weather, food, lies, deception, families, governments, morals, thoughts, The Untimely Figs are Falling from The Trees.

And lot of christians are running around here debating about "Tongues" we better be looking at The Prophesy that are "coming to Past" now, that has been proclaim that they will come to pass! And I am not talking about "Israel" either. The desert is flowing with water!:eyes:
