Judgement for what we don't know

Something just came up in my mind and heart, and I am puzzled and curious to hear what your guys' response will be. The question I am pondering is relative to God and his judgment. It is His job to judge us (Job 21:22 - Can anyone teach knowledge to God, since he judges even the highest?) and I trust his judgment more than anything else; I know my judgment is unimaginably inferior to his perfect judgment. However, I find trouble in the statement 'If you do not accept Jesus Christ you will go to hell'.

Now don't get me wrong, I know in my heart that rejecting Jesus Christ and God's offer for Him to be your atonement for sin definetly leads to damnation but the trouble I have with the statement above concerns those in the world who do not ever get a chance to hear His word and be saved. Something that has stuck with my heart is when I heard from someone that God will not judge you for what you do not know. It does make since considering all the countries and cultures where uttering God's word could likely get you the death penalty, thus word doesnt travel around those parts for obvious reasons.

Yet we have the missionaries, a very important part of ensuring everyone has a chance to know God's unbounding love through Jesus Christ. They bring about the latter statement in conjunction with God's word and yes, it is true that once you have heard the gospel for the first time and you are able to make the decision for yourself and reject said gospel you face damnation (Mark 16:15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation") (Luke 10:10-12 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.).

The thing that concerns me the most is the part where you aren't able to make the decision for yourself due to many possible reasons. Being young or mentally incoherant is the first thing that comes to mind, but what about severe hunger and medical conditions? Take a look at third world countries around the world and in a large percentage of Africa where famine and starvation are regular sights. Does someone who hasnt eaten in a couple weeks have the mental capacity to accept Jesus Christ as their savior when they hear a missionary bring the Word to them? I heard something that makes perfect sense once and it is that the number one priority in helping someone is to meet their physical needs first and foremost.

I guess what it comes down to is that we are not the ones who judge, that is up to God. He knows all of our circumstances without fail or any lack of clarity and he is a just God (Deuteronomy 32:4 - He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.) but I can't help but feel the answer to the question 'does not accepting Christ mean damnation for absolutely everyone even if they never hear or are able to choose Him?' is never really answerable. Again, I trust and am very thankful for his righteous judgement but I would love to hear your guys' thoughts on this matter.

Romans 9

"Hath not the potter power over the clay to make one vessel unto honour and another unto dishonour?"

I know this probably isn't the answer that you want to hear but I have often had this same question.. what about people who are mentally incompetent or never heard the gospel preached? This is the only answer I could ever come up with. It isn't a "good" or "fair" answer by the world's standards but it is the answer I have come to never-the-less.

Then again you have to question what is "good" and "fair" and who is "innocent"? The Bible says none of us are good, none of us are fair, none of us are innocent, and we are all like one who is unclean and our good works like filthy rags. The fact that God chose to save ANY of us through Jesus Christ is a miracle and it isn't about fairness at all. It is 100% pure grace. Fairness is we go to Hell for our sins.. that is what fair is. I am glad for one that God is unfair with me.

Anyway, read Romans 9. Here is a quote starting at Romans 9:17, but the whole chapter speaks to this question so go and read all of it.

For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden.

One of you will say to me: “Then why does God still blame us? For who resists his will?” But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’” Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for noble purposes and some for common use?

But we do know what's going to happen. We get to the gate, go into a private room with God, and then ask for forgiveness, or reject faith. Trust in God, and you'll be good. :)

Romans tells us that an awareness of God's existence and His law is written on everyone's heart at birth, whether they hear the gospel or not. As we develop the power to make decisions, we find that law speaking to us through our consciences.

"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse." (Ro 1:20 NIV)

The Bible tells us that no one is without excuse. God makes sure all mankind must recognise Him and call out to Him because He has made Himself KNOWN through His Creation. The ONLY reason mankind does not acknowledge God is due to their own wickedness.

RO 1:18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

RO 1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

RO 1:24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.
Mankind is given over to their own thoughts and darkened minds and human knowledge which is absent of God AFTER they have rejected Him. So that means at one time they were aware of Him even if it was only by His presence in Creation.

We know God doesn't desire to see anyone perish.

2PE 3:8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Unfortunately as mankind has free will to choose to repent or not then there will be those who will reject God and they will be judged accordingly but not judged in ignorance.
