Hello,

I've been looking for a "room" to chat with others, to make friends, to support and receive support.

I have an addiction that I've been struggling with and need a good place to land when I'm "tempted." I'm hoping this is it.

I also struggle with PTSD, but I visit a small support group for that every week.

BTW, "Arwen Undomiel" is a character from Lord of the Rings if you're wondering.

Welcome.
I'm sure someone or two here will be more than glad to help.
It might be more helpful to those looking to help you if they knew what the addiction was? If they have been where you are it is easier to help.
If they have not then their input may only hinder, even with your best interest at heart.
Only a suggestion.
And again welcome.

PS read all the books twice in my HS days. Love the movies as they finally did Tolkiens work justice.

Okay, but being addicted to sex isn't exactly how I had hoped to introduce myself. Maybe I should put it into perspective that I'm addicted to getting certain chemicals in my brain, but that covers most addictions. I'm sure there are worse addictions, but probably not when it comes to someone who wants to live the way He wants us to live.

P.S. I read Tolkien's trilogy in second grade. (I learned to read very early.) I liked Peter Jackson's movies, but I liked the books better. I like the scriptures even better 'cause they're not fiction.

Look at your addiction as something that needs to be overcome.
Indeed the lust of the flesh will drive a person to do just about anything to satisfy it. Thus you are being enslaved to that desire.
If you didn’t have anything to overcome there wouldn’t be any reward for having overcome it.
Now that you recognize it as a problem that needs correcting, what do you think you should do to shut it down?

Thanks, Chad. I was planning on quitting this site, but I've reconsidered. I need all the help I can get.

"Now that you recognize it as a problem that needs correcting, what do you think you should do to shut it down?"

I'm starting a 12-step program tonight. I hope I'll be able to say, "My name is _____, I've been sober for 11 days." ... if I can make it until then.

I have found that temptation is best defeated by the words of God. That’s what Jesus used to quench the temptations of the Devil and if good enough for Him should be good enough for all of us
We are to prove what is good and acceptable in the sight of God and He has told us what is not, thus temptation to sin is just that a temptation. When we give place to the temptation by thinking about the eventual outcome of a situation we give our mind an opportunity to define what it wants as opposed to what God would have you shut down as it leads only to death by serving sin.
That said, when temptation arises preach to yourself and the tempting item as well. Defeat it and the lust of the flesh by speaking Gods words to it.

I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengths me.
That applies to you if you will only apply it to you and any situation you find yourself in.
Avoid places and situations where your addiction could be fulfilled.

I avoid places and situations. I do to to a bar every Thursday to meet with others who are also suffering from PTSD, but I don't drink (never have). Work is work, so not much opportunity to do anything there. My man friend and I have chosen chastity 'cause we know it's the best for us. If marriage is for us, we'll wait until then.

My biggest challenge is my dreams. I've got of stuff stuck in memory and it doesn't go away. I've asked Him to remove this "thorn in the flesh," but He knows what's best for me. Maybe I just need to struggle for a while with it. Maybe He'll grant me forgetfulness. Either way, I'm okay with that.

Indeed a warrior must hold down his adversary under his/her foot and kill it. Hold it down long enough and God will kill it for you.

Nice to hear you are considering marriage just make it someone in the Lord as there will always be problems with their flesh as well as your own. Compounds
the problem especially if they are not in the Lord.

Best medicine for the dreams is reading the word prior to bedtime.
I can relate to unwanted dreams as we all get them, and if you will receive this,
they are a testing of your spirit to see just how strong your spirit is in regards to overcoming the carnal mind. When you get to the point that you are able to
shut them down by waking up or not being drawn into them as a participant your spirit is maturing.
You will come to understand this as you become aware in your dreams that what is presented is not right and you while still asleep reject the temptation
to participate or make yourself wake up. And it is your spirit doing the rejecting or the waking.

I met my man friend in church and he's a good and true man.

I have many "bedtimes" during the night. I set an alarm for 20 minutes, go to sleep, wake, read, and then repeat. If I sleep more than 20 minutes, I risk triggering my PTSD. 99% of my reading is the word. I know I need it.

I know how to "direct" my dreaming. I need to consistently direct them differently. Much of my mind is polluted with things that I did and I dream of that most of the time. I do have good memories and will meditate on those before I sleep..

Thank you for your advice.

Welcome Beth, there is a women's section where men dont see, if you want to share more online in that arena.

Hi Brad,

Thank you. I don't think they'd want to know any more of my past than anyone else, but if I need a woman's perspective, I'll go there.

'This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord,
that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk,
in the vanity of their mind,
Having the understanding darkened,
being alienated from the life of God
through the ignorance that is in them,
because of the blindness of their heart:
Who being past feeling
have given themselves over unto lasciviousness,
to work all uncleanness with greediness.
But ye have not so learned Christ;
If so be that ye have heard Him,
and have been taught by Him,
as the truth is in Jesus:
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man,
which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
And that ye put on the new man,
which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Wherefore putting away lying,
speak every man truth with his neighbour:
for we are members one of another.'
(Eph 4:17-25)

'Dearly beloved, I beseech you
as strangers and pilgrims,
abstain from fleshly lusts,
which war against the soul;'
(1Pe 2:11)

Hello @Arwen_Undomiel,

We are all human, and can understand what you are going through to a degree. For we have all experienced the deceitful lusts, in one form or another, and know, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are indeed 'fleshly lusts' which war against the soul, i.e., the whole person. They can affect you physically, mentally and emotionally, and are designed to keep you in bondage. Yet if you can but recognise them for what they are, as 'deceitful lusts', and acknowledge their goal, to make war against you, and keep you from reaching your full potential, then you can see them for what they truly are.

God wants you to be able to draw on His strength, which is there for you every moment of every day, ask Him to enable you to do so: to stop striving in your own strength, and lean on Him. Trust Him: and see and acknowledge what He has achieved for you in Christ Jesus, keeping your eyes upon Him, and trust Him to keep you in all circumstances. For He is faithful and will do it. Fill your mind and heart with praise to Him, and be occupied with Him, and the love He has for you. Give thanks in all things, and He will keep your heart and mind in Christ Jesus your risen Lord,

Thank you for sharing.

In Christ Jesus
Chris
