The wise men are ashamed, They are dismayed and taken. Behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; So what wisdom do they have? Jeremiah 8:9
Sometimes when intelligent people realize how much smarter they are than the average person, they get to trusting their own intelligence so much that they get cocky. They think that their brilliance in, say, mathematics, extends to all areas of life. They then haughtily pass judgment on issues of faith, assuming that they know a lot more than the "ignorant" people who wrote the Bible.
"This is what the Lord says: 'Let not the wise boast of their wisdom…but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord'" (Jeremiah 9:23-24). To be truly wise is to admit that, as much as you know, you haven't even begun to scratch the surface of all there is to learn.
In some matters you may be an expert, but in many, many areas you're wise to recognize that you're a small child compared to God, and place your hand in His. You don't know all the answers, but if You truly know God, you can trust that He knows what He's doing.
Prayer: Father, I thank You for the wisdom and expertise You have given me in certain areas. But I acknowledge that You are God, the only One who knows everything.
