Let be and be still, and know (recognize and understand) that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations! I will be exalted in the earth! Psalm 46:10 AMPC
Psalm 46 reminds God’s people that He is still in control, still in charge of the outcome—of all outcomes. That includes natural disasters—the changing earth, shaking mountains, and roaring waters—and international conflict—raging nations and tottering kingdoms.
God wants to remind us that His plans include a future free of strife—God at the center of our lives, in His holy city, a place flowing with peaceful waters and praise to our King.
And yet, the famous verse “Be still and know that I am God” doesn’t just mean quietly hoping that God will do something. In Hebrew, be still also means “let go” and “stop.” It implies surrender. Everyone will at one point surrender to God, but only some do so willingly. God will still His enemies’ futile struggle against Him, but He will strengthen and give hope to His people when we let Him be who He is and do what He does. We know He is God when we stop resisting the pull of the urgent and trust Him to ride out the craziness with us. In the end, He wins…and so will we.
Prayer: Almighty God, sovereign and unshockable, I put my life and the madness of the world in Your hands today.
