“Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.” (1 John 3:4-10 ESV)

When Jesus Christ gave his life up for us on that cross it was to put our sins to death with him so that, by God-persuaded faith in him, we would die with him to sin and be raised with him to walk in newness of life in him, no longer as slaves to sin, but now as slaves to God and to his righteousness. He died that we might no longer live for ourselves but for him who gave his life up for us. And he shed his blood for us to buy us back for God (to redeem us) out of our bondage to sin so that we will serve and obey him with our lives.

Jesus did not go through that painful death on that cross, taking upon himself the sins of the entire world, just to forgive us our sins so that we can go to heaven when we die. He died to change us, to transform us, to pull us up out of the miry pit of sin and to give us a new lease on life free from the control of sin and Satan, and free to now live holy lives pleasing to God, in the power of God, by the grace of God. So, by faith in him, we die with him to sin and we now walk in obedience to his commands in holy living.

So, if we make a profession of faith in Jesus Christ, but we continue to live just like we did before, still living to please our flesh in deliberate and habitual sin, while ignoring our Lord and his commandments, then according to the teachings of Jesus, of Paul, of John, and of the other New Testament apostles, we are not in relationship with God, we don’t have salvation from sin, nor do we have the hope of eternal life with him in heaven. So we should not let anyone teach us otherwise and deceive our minds.

For what did Jesus say? He said that not everyone who says to him, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING the will of God the Father who is in heaven. And many who profess him as Lord will stand before him on the day of judgment professing all that they did in his name, and he will say to them, “I never knew you! Depart from me you workers of lawlessness.” Why? Because they would not give up their sinful practices, and they would not walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands.

Jesus also said that if anyone would come after him that he must deny self, take up his cross daily (die daily to sin and to self) and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if for Jesus’ sake we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to his commands, in practice, in his power, then we have the hope of salvation from sin and eternal life with God. But if we deny him by our actions, he will deny us when he returns for his bride.

Now I am well aware that this is not what is popularly being taught as the gospel of our Lord Jesus today, but it is the truth of God’s word. And I am aware that the “gospel” message which is gaining the most ground today will not teach this passage of Scripture or any other passage which tells them that they must die to their sins and walk in obedience to the Lord. For they call that “works salvation,” but it is us living out the salvation that our Lord already provided for us who are of God-persuaded faith in the Lord Jesus.

So, we have to be careful who we are listening to, for not everyone who professes faith in Jesus Christ is of God and has the mind and heart of God, and is willing to teach the whole counsel of God and not a diluted and altered version of the true gospel in order to pacify human flesh and to not offend the people of the world they are trying to attract to their gatherings. So please be people who read the Scriptures in their context and who take them seriously and who are doing what they teach us we must do.

As the Deer

By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
