But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 NKJV
Of all great promises in scripture, here is one of the greatest.
We Christians know that this world is not everything. Death is not the end. Life, now such a strange mixture of joy and sorrow, will one day be completely good. Our Christian family and friends who have died on earth are fully alive in heaven, awaiting the day they return with Jesus, when He comes back to make everything right.
All of these things are based on the reality of Jesus’ resurrection. We believe that He died a real death on a real cross in a real time and place. And we believe that He really came back to life to demonstrate His infinite power. Death and Satan have no hold on Jesus, and He promises the same protection and victory to those of us who trust in Him.
We do not “sorrow as others who have no hope.” The Christian’ sorrow points toward an ultimate joy. So the apostle Paul says, “Comfort one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 45:18).
Prayer: Lord Jesus, You showed the way by Your death and resurrection. Thank You for promising me life after death—with You, forever!
