Listening to music on Youtube

What is your stance on this topic... Would it be considered stealing because you haven't purchased the music yourself? Or since you aren't actually downloading it, would it be fine? They have copyright infringement laws, so illegal music can be taken off, but plenty is still disregarded and left on there. Sometimes I can't tell if its my conscience or my OCD which is constantly questioning every little thing. So, I'm just looking for others opinions here. Thanks.

In 2010 is was 100% legal to stream ANYTHING you want on the internet. Any copyrighted or stolen material could be streamed legally. This also includes for any purpose as well. You could actually stream a movie in your home that wasn't released yet, then charge admission for that movie.

In June 2011 a bill was passed that targeted streaming content. It is now illegal to stream copyrighted material that will be used for commercial or financial gain. Basically this means that if the way you are using this content makes money for you, or helps you make money, it is illegal without permission.

Yes you can listen to music on youtube, and it isn't illegal. Just don't post the video on a big LCD screen outside your house with a sign under it that says "cookies for 1$".

Youtube pays royalties to like 2-3 different groups for music posted. Music that is not covered here or can be posted for free is removed.

Youtube pays ASCAP something like 70,000 a month to stream video's.

Whatever the case, if it's a good Christian group (Hill songs) and you feel they deserve money, then just go buy their CD.

When the Lord deals with us, it's normally to bless others, and even if it's Legal to get something for free, the Lord may be dealing with many to support his work, blessing those providing the service.

Never be led by the cost of something, free or millions of dollars, follow what you know to be right inside. The Lord may even ask you to offer more for something than what the person is originally asking for.

Money makes a lousy god, and being led by price is a successful route to missing out on what God is wanting to do.

Another thing to do is look(discerning) at the name on the account.Sometimes bands or record companies may post their own content up for public viewing.I also agree with supporting artist or any other worker in the faith financially.

Here's my take:

Don't "rip" music from YouTube or download them from "free mp3" apps on the phone. For conscience sake and respect to artists, buy them off Amazon or iTunes. $.99 for a song is not expensive. If you cannot afford to buy songs, then stick with free online radios like Pandora or LastFM, or even so - live streaming directly from radio stations' websites. They all have live streaming on their sites.

As for videos like on YouTube, if a video is already there for a specific footage, no reason to repost it. GOD knows your heart if you're trying to build yourself up for financial gain at someone else's expense. If you post say a Hillsong video to try to build up your profile and in your profile you have links to your "store" or such to buy so and so, your heart is not right.

Listening to songs on YouTube I believe is not wrong. If its an unreleased illegally leaked song, that might be another story.

Ask yourself the simple question: is what I'm doing honorable to GOD and glorifying to Him?

With regard to viewing or listening online.
I had always thought it was the responsibility of the site to ensure what was uploaded and viewed rather than the responsibility of the viewing public.

With regard to downloading.
I agree with others, i wouldn't download music that you know to be illegal, there are plenty of ways to get your tunes really cheap these days. Not from any moral standpoint but simply that if you respect the artist and like their work, then you will pay for their music.

I listen to music on Youtube all the time. There is so much great Christian music on there. At this very moment i am listening to a Christian Deathcore band called Bestiary. :shade:

I picked up a grieving of the Holy Spirit as I listened to these, Now I have missed God before, but as one that prays in tongues, and hears God, I don't think I missed this one.


The band split up in 2003 with only 2 albums. So, I guess God got tired of all that noise. I am not the judge, but I do have scriptures.

Psa 28:5 Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up.

Psa 127:1 A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

One thing is clear, if the Lord had anything to do with them, they would still be around.

I suppose you are against Unblack metal as well. Even though these bands praise the Lord in their songs. Just because the music is 'noise' to some, does not mean that they are not Christian. Judge not, that ye be not judged.

I completely agree, Mike. One of the first things God convicted me about upon my conversion, was my rather extensive rock/metal library. If you delve into the roots of this type of music, you'll find that the occult influences are very deep. And trying to emulate this style, and slap a Christian label across, is not right.

Who are you to say it's not right? You don't know those musicians. You have no idea what their relationship with God is. Secular rock and metal can be influenced by the occult, yes. So isn't it better that Christians are listening to Christian rock and metal and praising the Lord in that way?
