The Lord is slow to anger and great in power and will by no means clear the guilty. The Lord has His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet. Nahum 1:3 AMPC
When man encounters unexplainable phenomena, he tends to make up his own understanding. Early civilizations regarded destructive forces and weather patterns to be the work of the gods. The ancient Greeks believed Zeus threw lightning bolts. The Vikings believed Thor’s hammer caused thunder. Ancient Israel’s neighboring countries worshipped storm gods as well, even sacrificing their children to have favorable weather conditions.
Christianity is different. Yes, we believe that God is responsible for weather patterns and other natural phenomena, but simply because He is the Creator of all things. His purposes are achieved both in the mundane patterns of the seasons as well as the individually catastrophic whirlwind.
As you bundle up today—the first official day of winter and the shortest day of the year—thank God for being powerful and good, logical and unpredictable. Praise Him for creating our weather patterns, for the tilt of the earth that causes our seasons, and for the snow that reminds us of His purity. Praise Him for His mercy and grace to intervene on our behalf in unique and surprising ways. Praise Him that He does what is right all the time, even when we can’t explain it.
Prayer: God, You are great in power and greater in love!
