"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate, that He may be with you forever; the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him. You know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. John 14:15-17 LSB

If John 14 were a cup, it would be overflowing with examples of how the disciples were encouraged to take heart. Let’s settle in on verse 15. The backstory came in John 3, where we read that God loved everyone (no one left out). Between chapters 3 and 14 Jesus had taught His followers many things. That would mean that those followers should have understood cause and effect a little better than they seemed to.

How about a refresher on what Jesus said. If you want to show that you love Jesus, then pay attention to what He said you should do. And then? Do that. Obedience will be hard, so a Helper will take up residence in your life. He will be a friend. He will teach truth.

This is an impressive list of reasons to take heart. You’re not asked to fake it until you make it, try hard and then try harder, or even believe something else that seems easier. Trust. Obey. Take heart.

Prayer: Let me work with You, Lord, not against You. Don’t let me try to be perfect on my own. Help me take heart because I always have Your help.
