In politics, entertainment, sports or any arena of competition, you are applauded for what you have accomplished. At academy awards and podiums no body knows about how the person got there. But truth is that most successful people have done something illegal or immoral to get to where they got. May be they slept with the boss, may be they cheated on their tax filing, may be they took performance enhancing drug, may be they sacrificed their family, may be they trampled all over people, but no matter how they get there, they are celebrated. If we were to be told how they got there, the celebration would end right there on the stage.
Judgment day will be very different. On that day we are not judged by what we have accomplished. We are not judged merely based on what we did. Why we did what we did and how we did it matter more than what we did. Our motives, integrity etc...are the subject of judgment; not how many sermons we preached, not how many people got saved etc... That means there will be a lot of surprises in heaven. On one hand all the best awards will go to people we least expected. On the other hand as Jesus indicated there will be people who will say to Him 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?'…. He then said……Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
Motive is the core of what we do. Two people can be doing exactly the same thing for diametrically opposite motives. Motive is what drives our actions behind the scene. Many times no one sees it. Sometimes it even eludes ourselves. But wise Christians take time to weight their motives. Rushing to do things without carefully weighing our motives is one of the most foolish things to do. It is one of the most common reasons for failure in Ministry.
“All a man's ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the LORD.” Prov. 16:2
