The Bible likens Christianity to a race where each person’s race is marked out; not as in a race against each other but each person having his/her own race; more like a race against time. It says, “let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…” Heb 12:1-2.

My picture of this verse is walking up the stairs of an escalator that moves downward. It is not easy and that is why we have to “…run with perseverence…”. But if we look up to the end of the stairs, we will see our destiny and realize that we are headed in the right direction. If we look up we will see Jesus at the end of the stairs and that is why we need to “...fix our eyes on Jesus…” But if we look around, we will see all the people who are following the flow of the escalator. It may feel like you are going against the whole world with most people around you going in the opposite direction. They seem to have an enjoyable ride flowing with the escalator but they don’t seem to realize that they are going down. But you, you gotta be tough and keep moving up all the time. If you stop moving forward you will definitely start to move backward.

If you flip your Bible one chapter back, you will see a list of great men and women of God who have gone through what you are going through. That chapter, i.e., Hebrews chapter 11 is the hall of faith where you see all the big names of faith. After the writer of Hebrew gives us this list, he goes on to say, “Since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses let us run with perseverance ….” They are your role models, men and women of God who made it to the top of the stairs by fixing their eyes on Him and Him alone.

“Elijah was a man just like us” James 5:17……He just had faith that could stop and start the rain.
