Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God
Romans 12:2
Mum, please can I have some lipstick?
Mum, all my friends wear mascara
Mum I look ugly without make up….look how much better my friend looks.
Mum, the girls in my class say I will grow up to be really boring if I don’t wear makeup and have my ears pierced
Does any of this sound familiar?
I hear it time and time again.
I am a mum of 4 daughters dealing with the oldest two oldest being tempted by the world of makeup, and facing immense peer group pressure……
I thought writing this thread may be useful especially to Christian teenage girls facing the same dilemmas. It is not intended to condemn anyone but to look, from a Christian perspective, at how to deal with some of the awful peer group pressure that occurs
So let’s establish some facts:
What does the Bible say about women wearing makeup?
The use of makeup in the bible is always mentioned with regard to immoral women, the harlot.
They even sent messengers for men who came from far away, and when they arrived you bathed yourself for them, painted your eyes and put on your jewellery
Ezekiel 23:40
And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window
2 Kings 9:30
How are women told to adorn themselves?
The Bible clearly instructs women to be modest and the use of makeup isn’t a sign of modesty.
Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
1 Peter 3:3-4
What does the Bible say about the outward appearance?
The LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7
The dilemma
What do I do?
My friends all say that I should wear make-up.
They say that I’m odd if I don’t
Well your friends have no rights to instruct you
Peer group pressure like this is just a form of temptation to try to get you to do something that you shouldn’t
Be odd…..Dare to be a Daniel and stand for what you believe in
Besides why not be different from those friends that slap muck on their faces and hide their true beauty
Say no straight away, establish where you stand it will make things easier than if you chop and change your mind.
Pray for your friends…..they may have make-up but you have something far more precious…..you have Jesus
Remember the word of the Lord
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
1 Corinthians 10:13
In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths
Proverbs 3:6
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me
Philippians 4:13
My mum and dad say I shouldn’t wear makeup
The Word of God says
Honour thy father and thy mother
Exodus 20:12
The word honour means respect, value and revere
Your parents are the heads of your household. Even if you don't agree with their rules the Bible still says you are to follow those rules
Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching
Proverbs 1:8 NIV
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Colossians 3:20
The Bible only associates makeup with prostitutes
In the Bible women are exhorted to be modest
There is not much in the bible associated with cosmetics but certainly the passages referred to in 2 Kings and Ezekiel 23 refer to wicked immoral women.
There is much reference to women dressing and behaving modestly in both the Old and New Testament
God put this in the Bible for a reason and as Christians we should strive to obey His word, out of love for the One who saved us and clothed and adorned us in His righteousness.
Wearing makeup is not being modest.
It is vanity…to try to make yourself look better or even the best.
It is saying that you are not happy with the way the Lord made you
He loves you just as you are.
He is interested in your heart not your outward appearance
......that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works
1 Timothy 2 9-10
Other Considerations
Make up is time consuming……that is time being spent on self.
Would it not be better to spend that time with the Lord in study or prayer?
Or even in helping your mum and dad with some chores
Makeup is made from chemicals that can be ingested. Some of the ingredients are poisonous.
Just this month the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that 400 popular lipsticks contained trace amounts of the toxin lead.
Makeup is expensive.
The money spent on makeup cant be used for anything else.
Could your money be put to better uses?
So what do I do now
You are a child of the King of kings
Beautiful and precious to Jesus
Clothed in His righteousness
Awaiting to be changed to His likeness
Talk to the Lord in prayer about these matters
Study His Word
Mix with other Christian friends where Jesus is the centre of the fellowship rather than wordly things
Pray for your friends especially those who are unsaved, they may have makeup…but you have the Saviour
But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
To Him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
