I say “not improved” because the new man does not need improved, being the nature after Christ (Col 3:10); and the old man cannot be improved, because it cannot be “subject” to the will of God (Rom 8:7)! I am the new man, not the old, for we “are not in the flesh” (old man or sin nature - Ro 8:9), though it yet “dwells within me.” Paul realized that he was not part of the old man when he said he did not do the wrongs, but the sin (old man) did the wrongs (Ro 7:17, 20 ); and we ourselves, in our new man are not in connection with our old man!

God has placed enmity between the believer and the old man (and between anything opposing God), so that it can be said that it’s not the believer, in his new man sinning, but in the old man; and we are not our old man. This is not to deny we sin but that we are not accountable for the old man; because it is not us, the new man that only desires to please God (1Jo 3:9).

God knows our will is only to please Him, for He “works” this in all who are reborn (Phl 2:13). This answers to why the separation, or sanctification from the old man (flesh). He does not want us to have any part with it, other than when we are tested by its temptings. When we see ourselves sin, we know it is not us in the new man but in the old, and we continue to learn God’s will because of it.

The new man does not sin, and it is never intentional or willful when we do sin. This is the intension of Paul’s use of the word “captive” (Ro 7:23). He still sins against his will, and protests that it is not him doing the sin. He has to be brought “into captivity to the law of sin” which is in him.

Paul knew he still sinned, but he also learned that he is “delivered” from the sin (Rom 7:24), and was thankful to God (v 25). He said he served the will of God “with the mind,” which is the intension of his new man; and when he said it was “myself” (v 25), he was referring also to his new self. He admitted still serving “the law of sin,” but he now knew it was not with himself in the new man that did it, but with the “flesh” (old man or sin nature).

I believe this answers to that “Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God” (1Jn 3:9). When you are reborn God “works in you” not to desire to sin—which is the goal. The “seed” is the new nature, that “cannot sin,” which are those reborn and have a new nature from Christ (some think the “new man” is Christ, but this cannot be because it was “created” - Eph 4:24).

When we sin, though it is with the old man, we still confess (admit) we sinned and repent; and thank God for His unbroken and “faithful” forgiveness (1Jn 1:9)!

Rom 7:19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want.
Rom 7:20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me.

'This then is the message which we have heard of Him,
.. and declare unto you,
.... that God is light,
...... and in Him is no darkness at all.
If we say that we have fellowship with Him,
.. and walk in darkness,
.... we lie, and do not the truth:
...... But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light,
........ we have fellowship one with another,
.......... and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin.
If we say that we have no sin,
.. we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,
.. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins,
.... and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If we say that we have not sinned,
.. we make Him a liar,
.... and His word is not in us. '

Hello @Bethel,

Thank you for being concerned about my standing before God. :)

My 'standing' is that I am saved by God's grace, through faith in the all-sufficient sacrifice of Christ my Saviour, who took the penalty of my sin upon Himself and died in my place, that I may receive the gift of God of eternal life in His name. Before God I stand in Christ Jesus, as one who is holy and without blame, not because of anything I have done, but because of that one sacrifice of Christ on my behalf. I have been forgiven for all my sin, and have been accepted in the Beloved, and am complete in Him.

I now reckon myself to be dead indeed unto sin and alive unto God. Having been given the spirit of adoption in Christ Jesus my Lord. In God's eyes I have died with Christ, been buried, quickened and raised with Christ and am seated in Him at God's right hand, where I await He Who is my life to appear, when I too, along with all the members of the Body of Christ will appear with Him in glory.

That is my standing in Christ Jesus before God, and that is unshakeable.

However in regard to my 'state':- it is also true that I still inhabit a body of flesh, and it is subject to sin. To say that we have no sin would be untrue, I just accept God's estimate of it, and live looking for my Saviour, as one who has been raised from the dead, and as one who is walking in the spirit, having been made meet to partake of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

I walk by faith and not by sight.:)

'Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin;
for His seed remaineth in him:
and he cannot sin,
because he is born of God.'
(1 John 3:9)

Praise God!

* My, 'new nature,' indeed cannot commit sin, for it is born of God: but to deny that I have an, 'old nature,' that will be with me until death would be a lie.

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

Yes! This is so true. And the transformation into the image of His Son is not instantaneous. The New Man grows in Christ when the Spirit is on you and for some it is a longer process for some than for others. In my experience, when I was that Old Man I lived for sinning. I did not even consider it wrong. Though I sinned every day (living out my will and worshipping the Self...elf glorification, self gratification, and even when doing something that appeared to be for another it was really about me) I started planning my Friday and Saturday night by Wednesday evening. Where I would go, how I would dress, how I would get money to play, what booze or drugs I might do, where I could hunt for promiscuous sex, etc.

Sin was my life style and on occasion I would try to do what was right and other oriented (but usually for praise of me). But after I realized God was real and I came to Christ, that soon shifted and doing right was the norm and on occasion I would fall short but when I did I felt the contrition (what was that I wondered at first). More and more over time I stopped all these bad habits, stopped listening to the crowd and even the music and did not venture the places and activities of yesteryears, truly the Old Man had died in that water and slowly but surely I was becoming more and more conformed to the image of His Son. I was happy, and fulfilled, and had real peace and assurance. Now decades later and I still find residue of Sin within popping up its ugly head now and again, now and again, but I KNOW it is not who I am doing it and that when He appears I shall be like Him. Christ in you truly IS the hope of glorification (hope as in the eager expectation of what we KNOW will be). Thank you Lord.

I appreciate you sharing, and thanks for the sensitive reply! Yes, "being conformed" (Rom 8:29) to Christ's image or "walk" (1Jo 2:6) will take the rest of our lives in this world, but everything that the Lord Jesus is, we already are; and our walk manifests this more all the time! God bless!
