A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. A psalm of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the LORD protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones. Psalm 127:1-2 NLT
The Bible consistently praises hard work. But it also offers reminders that we can make work an idol—a false marker of our value. Psalm 127 remarks on the vanity—the ultimate emptiness—of basing our worth on our work. It’s a warning for those who overindulge in work and so neglect more important matters.
The workaholic might ask, “Why does God need to be involved in building a house? Surely, I can handle those details.” But what if your dream of a house consumes you—your time, resources, and relationships? God’s priorities get lost along the way—seeking His kingdom first and providing a secure, God-centered environment for your wife and kids.
Sometimes, we must burn the candle at both ends—but not as a way of life. Rest here means taking time for God and to recharge so we can be at our best for those we should value most. When we strive in His strength, not ours, we remind ourselves who God is and how much we need Him. That’s worth taking a breath.
Prayer: Father, I will trust You with all I do, including my work. Make Your priorities mine and grant me peace as I rest in You.
