One Man's Meat

"One man's meat is another man's poison" goes the adage. And how true indeed. We differ so tremendously from each other in so many ways. It is said that no two blades of grass are alike: it is certainly true that no two persons are alike. Each one is unique. "I thank God there are not two of me" stated one fellow. "I could not bear the competition" Yes said a nearby friend, "I thank God also, for I could not stand the strain"

Chabner, the French composer, started his career in law. He gave it up for music "Law to me is like a dessert" he confessed, "there is nothing to see".
On the other hand, Dr. Samuel Johnson was tone deaf. He attended a concert at which a celebrated virtuoso played the violin before a distinguished company. After the applause had died down a lady turned to him and said, "What a difficult piece that was to play" "Madam" he replied testily, "I wish it were impossible"

I have a friend to whom a balance sheet is a delight; to me they are often an enigma. When an accountant unfolds their devious labyrinths, he could well begin with. "Behold I show you a mystery" But take me to a bookshop, especially second-hand theology section, and I am lost to the world.

What of it? We should at least try to appreciate another's preference. If a man differs from me, is he thereby wrong? If his ways are strange to me, are not my ways also strange to him? As I wish him to accept me and my ways, so must I learn to appreciate his.

In food or friends, in habit and habitat, in vocation and avocation, in vision and in venture - we all differ. But may not our differences enable us to minister to each other? What I lack, my brother can supply. It is wisdom not only to appreciate each other, but to appropriate one another' services that we might lack no necessary thing.

Herein lies the wonder of Christ. He satisfies all tastes. To the poor.....He is an enricher. To the lonely...He is a friend. To the bereaved.....a Comforter. To the weak one ....strength.
The thinker finds Him a philosopher divine. The dreamer discovers in Him the beatific vision. The pragmatist finds Him to be the ultimate reality. Children find in Him their Shepherd. Youths see in Him their Champion. Adults follow him as the ideal man. Old folk rest in Him as their solace for declining years. The three great writers of the New Testament epistles, Paul, Peter, and John, all speak of the satisfaction Jesus gives.

Paul the Shepherd, Peter the practical, John the emotional, ........each find in Jesus their soul's delight. Christ is every-mans meat.......the bread of heaven suited to all palates, the Saviour that satisfies all temperaments, the Lord.....just right for you.......and me.

Awesome post, Stephen. Jesus, the Son of Man did indeed satisfy all tastes in his earthly ministry because the power and wisdom of the Holy Spirit coursed through his body. And he continues to do so now from his seat at the right hand of the Father.
