Opening the bible at random...

As of late each day I'll pray and then have an extended period of quiet time to try and hear what God has to say to me at the moment. After the quiet period I'll also invite God to speak into my life through His word and open the Bible to a random page to see if anything relevant to my life jumps out at me.

I always thought that if God had something he wanted to make me aware of then I wouldn't really be opening the Bible to a random page at all as though it feels random to me, it's really God making sure I open to a page that contains information I need to see. A friend recently told me though that in doing this I'm testing God and that I shouldn't. I was just wondering which view is the correct one?

Hi,

You will know in your heart if you are testing God or not. Trust your own conscience.

Having said that, I would not advocate reading at random as the best way to approach the Bible. The Bible reveals God's nature bit-by-bit, and to understand what you are reading properly, we must know a little bit about where a Bible passage fits into the big story, who the original audience was, and what situation they were in.

If you read in a more planned way, then it will be easier to pick up what is going on in each text, and it may be easier to hear what God is saying. My experience is that a systematic approach does not prevent God speaking.

Hi,

Thanks for that, I honestly don't think I am testing God but I was wondering if there was a definite answer. Also I do take a structured approach to reading the Bible too, this is just something I do in addition to that.

Dear JordanChambers.

Randomness, does this exist? We have not as yet been able to create a random sequence of numbers. Is it possible to randomly open the Bible and start reading?

For me, I know that when I open the Bible, I am aware of the position. Hence, I approximately know what I will be reading.

Also, I do know that the Bible is the revelation of Jesus Christ and His redemptive plan for mankind. Thus, randomness does not work for me.

BrotherJordanChambers What you are learning I truly believe,as I myself went through the very same phase as you are right now,is what really is prayer? First we must believe prayer is going to do any good!

And in order to find this out for myself,I had to ask, seek, and knock.( matt 7:7) asking is never a problem!LOL that is the easy part in our start at prayer. After the asking, here was the tough part for me,I asked Priests, other believers,etc.. Then one afternoon in Prayer the Holy Spirit said to me,mark, you are asking the wrong people about your situation, what does my Word say for you to do??

Jer 33:3 You do not ask an angel,a priest,or anyone else!Jer 33:3 CALL to ME and I will answer you,AND I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.Prayer my brother has one limit!! Prayer is limited to what God can do! ah what can God not do?? ( jeremiah 32:27- is anything?? to difficult for me?) jer 32:17, Matt 19:26 But with God all things are possible. ,other scripture to look at for you. Job 42:2,Mark 10:27 luke 1:27,luke 18:27 so now knowing this my brother,we seek, the second step.

If you were to lose your wallet, how long would you seek it??If you are like me!! LOL till YOU find it!! The point! Many believers look to the Power of God in there life, to get what they need, but you well know that Peter was arrested bu Herod, the Power of God did him no good, and James was killed by Herod, the Power of God did him no good either. The arm of God or the very power of God is created first!! in Prayer!

The arm of God responds to the touch of prayer. Now in the asking realm of prayer, the devil is in this realm, depending on how strong we seek,do we find,in the meantime of our seeking the devil is afraid of only one thing!! NOT US!! Nor is he afraid of anything in this World either! He is afraid of a man or woman of God that falls on his or her knees in prayer, and will not leave this are till his or her seeking is done!

Now the devil is on the outside of the throne room of God,where we are at the moment,he is working very hard on getting us to turn around forget all of this seeking and finding bussiness and just call it a day! We find in our younger day in Christ, that yea we are just to busy to pray to long, and we find out that since we are to busy to pray,we are to busy to recieve results either!

So for many years we just wonder if God can even hear us anymore! Good news for you!! You see Jesus is in his throneroom waiting for something to happen!! He is expecting you!! If you go to a friends house who is expecting you,and you get to the door, this after you have been seeking his home, and you finally get to the door, how long will you knock upon it? Why until it opens of course!! AMEN!!

SAME with the Door of Jesus! Jesus hears you knocking, he says angels!! there is BrotherJordanChambers at my door!! He sought me all the way!!He has gotton to my door and is knocking!! Angels move aside!! I Jesus will open the door for him!!( jer 33:3!!) This my Brother in Christ, is what you are learning in our Jesus!! Those who ask recieve, because they seek until they find!!

And when they have found!! and knock upon the door!! it is opened up by Jesus himself for us!! may this bring you great comfort, and great joy!! I can tell you this!! It sure has me!! Praise God!!

Opening thebible at ransdon....not to be advised.

A man opened the bible at random and read "Judas went out and hanged himself" So he opened it at random again to read "go and do thou likewise"

Such random reading is not advised.

God Bless You

Forgive me, but I actually found that hysterical - yet insightful as well.

True, random is not the way the Bible is meant to be read. The bible should be read as is, as books, stories, in context.

So I am sure you dont have to read the bible in a certain order, but how is it recommended? I mean where is it recommended that you start and is it in any sort of order that you are supposed to read it in?

I have been trying to read the bible and I am new at it and don't know where to start. Sometimes I feel like I will pick somewhere to start reading and then I feel like I have started in the middle of story. I am new to this, sorry, but I could use some guidance myself as to how to read the bible. Any help would be appreciated. thanks!

If you 'google' that, you will find them and be able to sign up.

Blessings.

John Wesley, founder of Methodism, used to try to find help from God for his daily struggles by randomly opening the Bible and pointing to a verse. He didn't find it useful, and stopped doing it because he realized he was being supertitious and was taking verses he found totally out of context. He found prayer a better way of finding guidance.

I do not believe God or the Holy Spirit "plants" specific thoughts or directions in our minds, but can open our minds to discern ways that our choices can show our love for him and our neighbor. I strongly believe in free will, and if God "tells" us what to do then he is taking away our free will and we are acting like a robot. Rather, God opens our minds about a situation, making it easier to see what choices at the time can best show our love.

Most of my Bible reading is in preparing for a study class, either as participant or leader, using various study guides either on a part of the Bible or on a topic (such as a hot social issue) and what related things the Bible has to say about it. But if I just wanted to read the Bible individually, I would start with the New Testament, and in the NT I would start with Paul's letters because these were written before the 4 Gospels. Then I would read Mark (earliest Gospel), then Matt, Luke, & John. Then the rest of the NT except for Revelations, which is very complicated. Then I'd go to the Old Testament and begin reading from Genesis right on through all of it, and end with Revelations.

I highly recommend either the English Standard Version or the New American Bible, Revised, which are the closest literal translations. That makes some of the wording a bit awkward, and there are still portions which are not translated properly, but they are both based upon what most scholars agree are the most accurate ancient manuscripts, and both use information scholars have discovered about how to properly translate certain passages. For instance, relatively recent discoveries of ancient Greek secular writings clarify some of the words Paul used in his letters, which up to now have been mistranslated, and both the ESV and NAB use this new info in their translations.

Get a version that cross references verses, that is, point to other parts of the Bible using the same words or same concepts, and read these cross-references as you go along. This gives you a better understanding of what the verses mean, which is the purpose of reading in the first place.

I love all these replies, this is a well rounded discussion.

I agree David,I almost know what chapter of what book I'm going to be near.

The Hebrew priests used to discern Gods will with Urim and Thumim while wearing the ephod.
Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.

I think there are other verses also, but I believe scripture does not support the concept of random.

The first few times I ever tried that I kept getting Jeremiah or Ezekiel saying "woe" unto somebody.
I do however enjoy opening an area I haven't read in a while just to see if I catch anything new.
I also enjoy hitting the random thread button at TalkJesus, but it's not really random either,if it turns out to be wrong I'm going to say "Chad gave me and I clicked".No,not really I'll back Chad up on that.

I did this tonight and I read the verse 1 Corinthians 10:9 Reading we should not test Jesus as some of them did and were killed by snakes. I can not deny that that was a warning to never do that again.

@JordanChambers

What you are doing is not recommended my friend, many fall in to this trap in their lives, it is what the devil wants you to do, not what Christ wants you to do.

The problem with what you are doing is you are randomly looking at one verse you eye goes to on a page, some have done the same by closing their eyes and pointing at the page, it is dangerous, you will read out of context, you will fail to understand the true meaning of scripture.

All scripture is God breathed, and all of it is required by us to understand it correctly. Many times we have to read 3, 5, 7 different verses and sections to fully understand the truth in The Word. Scripture is full of examples but allow me to share a very simple one if I may.

Romans 10:13 (NKJV)
13 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved."

Acts 16:31 (NKJV)
31 .."Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household."

Ask many people do they believe in the Lord Jesus and they will say yes.

The same applies to call on the Lord, how do we call, how do we believe, do we call as we should, do we believe as we should, as scripture tells us?

It is so easy to misunderstand or mis interpret single verses.

Let us look at another, just about everyone knows the Gospel in miniture, they may not know it has been called that but the verse is familiar.

John 3:16 (NKJV)
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Wonderful verse isn't it. yes, I believe, I was told this at school or at Sunday school. is that enough? No. But we are picking a single verse, it could be any verse, it says if I believe, I will not perish but have everlasting live. Lets all jump on board, we are saved. One verse reading is dangerous.

It is recommended that when reading this verse we should read at least verses 1 to 21 of John chapter 3. Or better still the whole chapter, but let us focus on John Chapter 3 verses 1-21

Before verse 16 we have 15 other verses, all are important 3 of them are of paramount imortance. Verses 3, 5 and 7

After verse 16 we have 5 other verses, again these are very important and carry a very important message to us. It is important to understand the messages before v16 as they explain items very important to this verse, reading one verse we would miss the importance and the devil leads us astray. But having understood the first 16 verses then there is a final message which is equally important, let us look at this below.

John 3:1-21 (NKJV)
1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."
3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
4 Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'
8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

Did reading verse 16 on it's own tell us this... No!

9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things be?"
10 Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things?
11 Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness.
12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven.
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Did verse 16 tell us what was said previously? No. Does it tell us the verses aft it? No
Reading single verses by any method can lead us to totally misunderstand the message.

17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Reading just one verse, here verse 16 would we have realised the condemnation? No.
But we would believe, because we believe He lived and was told in Sunday School as a kid, we will not perish but have Everlasting Life. Really!

19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God."

I do hope you see the warning here, so many fall nto the trap.

Would you know how to start and drive a car you have never seen before, would you know how to use an electronic gadget you have never seen before by reading one line on any page?

God makes things very clear and very simple, it is us that makes things complicated for ourselves. I say this as a man who is terrible at reading manuals, so many men are, and the ladies are not very good with electronic gadgets, but the Bible is different, it is a life or death manual of Love.

Another thought regarding this example, the Bible includes stories of things that really happened, many include the disciples, who were first 'Called' and then grew with the Lord. So somethings didn't always need repeating. We are the same, you may say to a child do this or that, your boss may say do this or that, the first time said more details are given, later you are expected to know, your children are expected to know. So when we read John 3 we see John stated three times We MUST be Born Again, He took time to get the message over, He then after v16 follows with a warning of what happens if we are not. So when we read scripture later we read, call on the Lord we will be saved, believe and we will be saved, trust and we will be saved.

Only if we read all scrioture in context and not read just one verse.

Bless you

Peace be with you.
