From a book I'm working my way through
Sam, paused, though about this, and replied. “They would think we are chasing ghosts or demons. When we’re not.”
“Aren’t you, Sam?” Merlin put in. “What is a demon? Isn’t a demon the spirit of a Nephil who has died? Isn’t that what a ghost is, a spirit of one who has died?”
“Well I’ll give you that, but these flyers, and the cryptids we’ve met, the living giants are not ghosts.”
“No, but they are things that only populate a person that relegates them to the world of fiction. If its fictitious how can it possibly be real? That is the reasoning of the general populace. People generally do not want to know that such creatures exist in real life.” Merlin shook his head. “They’ll probably want to argue doctrine which is silly too, but safer for you, than outright rejection of you. Most church doctrines, like most commentaries that the Children of Theall swoon over are merely the opinions of men who have read the Book, and write down what they understand from that Book. Right or wrong, if it’s in print, people take it as gospel. The only doctrine that is accurate is the doctrine of the Book itself.”
“Why is that Merlin? Why do people prefer commentaries, and pastor’s thoughts over the teaching of the Spirit of Theone? Wasn’t the Spirit given to us as a teacher? So why do the Children of Theall push Him to one side? It seems like a majorly foolish thing.”

“It is a majorly foolish thing Sam. People have a degree of intelligence, and the fallen ones have convinced them that they need to study spirit things with a non-spirit intelligence. The truth of it is, though, one does not understand the other. There is no way the intelligence of the flesh man can understand the intelligence of the Spirit.
