Continuing in John 4.. recap: Jesus had a divine appointment with a woman at a well. He asked her for a drink of water, and they got into a conversation. Jesus talked to her about the “gift of God” and “living water,” which have to do with the gospel of Christ, i.e. with Jesus Christ, our walks of faith and obedience to our Lord, our salvation, our eternal life with God, and the indwelling Holy Spirit. And this involves us dying with Christ to sin and now walking in obedience to his commands, as empowered by God’s Spirit.

Then Jesus said to the woman, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” (John 4:16-18 ESV)

Nothing is hidden from God, and Jesus Christ is God, the second person of our triune God – Father, Son Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit. So Jesus knew about this woman’s life even before he had this divine appointment with her. And I believe his intention in beginning this conversation with her all along was so that he could talk with her about her life and the life that he had for her in place of the life that she had been living. The need for a drink of water at that well was just an opening for Jesus to share with her the gospel.

And Jesus Christ knows everything about our lives, too, and how we are living. Nothing is hidden from him. You may hide your sins from other humans, but God always knows what you are doing. And he has a message he wants to share with you, too, for the ultimate purpose of sharing with you the gospel of his salvation. He wants you to believe in him, to die with him to sin, and to now walk in obedience to his commands in holy living in submission to his will and purpose for your life – all in his power!

[Matthew 7:13-14,21-23; Luke 9:23-26; John 1:12-13; John 6:44; John 10:27-30; Acts 26:18; Romans 2:6-8; Romans 6:1-23; Romans 8:1-14; Romans 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 10:1-22; Galatians 5:16-21; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:17-32; Ephesians 5:3-6; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:1-19; Hebrews 4:1-13; 1 Peter 2:24; 1 John 1:5-10; 1 John 2:3-6; 1 John 3:4-10]

“The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.” (John 4:19-26 ESV)

At the time that Jesus lived on the earth, the Jews were still under the Old Covenant that God had with his people Israel. And the Gentiles, for the most part, were excluded from Israel. So Jesus spoke to this woman of the New Covenant which was coming and was now there in the person of Jesus Christ, although they did not enter into the New Covenant until after Jesus’ death and resurrection, which is when the Old Covenant was done away with and the New Covenant was instituted for all who believed in Jesus Christ.

So, no longer would anyone have to go to a building at a specific location on any particular day of the week to worship God. For, by faith in Jesus Christ, we are indwelt with the Holy Spirit of God, and now we can come into the presence of our Holy God 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at any time of day, and at any location. For we worship him in spirit and in truth. And this means that our lives are devoted to and surrendered to our Lord all the time, and we are now living for him in doing what he has called us to do.

And the purpose of our gatherings together, as the body of Christ, is so that we might encourage (exhort, urge, counsel) one another in our walks of faith in the Lord Jesus to surrender of our lives to the Lord in holy living. We are to speak the truth in love to one another so that we are not led astray by false teachings which tickle itching ears and which do not require that we die with Christ to sin and now walk in obedience to his commands. And we are to exhort one another so we are not entrapped by the deceitfulness of sin.

[Romans 12:1-8; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31; 1 Corinthians 14:1-5; Galatians 6:1; Ephesians 2:8-10; Ephesians 4:1-16; Ephesians 5:15-21; Ephesians 6:10-20; Philippians 2:1-8; Colossians 3:12-16; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:23-25; James 5:19-20]

So, if you are relying on a verbal profession of faith in Jesus Christ for your salvation and eternal life with God, but you have not died with Christ to sin, and so you are not walking (in conduct) in surrender to him in walks of obedience to his commands, please know that the Scriptures teach you must die daily to sin and follow Jesus in obedience if you want eternal life with him and salvation from sin. And worship of God is giving our lives to him as living sacrifices to him, holy and pleasing to God, not just singing “worship” songs.

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer

Lyrics by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897
Music by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897

Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.
