“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. ‘But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:14-21 NASB1995)
Jesus never promised us that life would be easy. He never promised us a life without pain and suffering. He never said that if we believe in him that now everyone will love us, and that everyone will want to be our friend. In fact, he promised us the opposite of that. He promised us that if we follow him with our lives that we will be hated and persecuted as he was hated and persecuted, and that we would be mistreated and falsely accused of wrong, and called crazy, even by our own family members, as he was treated.
And the closer our walk with the Lord Jesus, and the closer our fellowship with him, and the more that we are listening to his voice, and that we are doing what he says we ought to do, the greater will be our persecution. For the closer our walk with the Lord the more Satan will hate us and he will do everything within his power to try to stop us or to get us distracted. For he wants us put out of commission. He does not want us sharing the truth of the gospel, for he wants people believing the lies which he is spreading.
So, what are we to do with those who do evil to us, who hate us, and who mistreat and persecute us for our obedience to God? We are to bless them. And to bless means to speak to them words which will be beneficial for them, not lies, but truth. And we are to love them, forgive them, and do good to them. We are not to return evil for evil, but we are to return evil done to us with good back to those who did evil to us. For this is how Jesus treated his persecutors, and it is how he wants us to treat ours.
Now, with regard to rejoicing with those who rejoice, and weeping with those who weep, and being of the same mind toward one another, not being haughty, but associating with the lowly, this all must be in accord with the good examples that Jesus and his New Testament apostles set before us. And it must be in agreement with the teachings of Jesus and of his New Testament apostles. So we do not rejoice with evil, but with good, as God defines good. And we must be of the same mind and heart as God foremost.
And this goes to being at peace with all people, too. We never compromise truth or righteousness or moral purity or faithfulness or obedience to our Lord in order to make peace with anyone, no matter who they are. We must stand strong on the Word of God and on the gospel message taught by Jesus and by his New Testament apostles, and we must not bend or back down or withdraw just so we won’t be hated, and so people will like us, and so they will include us as one of them, and not treat us like we are weird.
So, no matter how we are treated or what other people think of us or do to us, not only must we stand strong on the Word of Truth, but we must love those who mistreat us and who do evil against us, and we must do good back to them, where possible. So if our enemy is hungry, we are to feed him. And if he is thirsty, we are to give him a drink. For in so doing we will heap burning coals on his head, for our enemy will have not conquered us as he had hoped, and so he will not have gained the victory over us. For we overcame evil with good, and we did not give up or give in to fear.

All The Way My Savior Leads Me
Lyrics by Frances J Crosby, pub. 1875
Music by Robert Lowry, pub. 1875
All the way my Savior leads me,
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy,
Who through life has been my Guide?
Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort,
Here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know, whate’er befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well.
All the way my Savior leads me,
Cheers each winding path I tread,
Gives me grace for every trial,
Feeds me with the living Bread.
Though my weary steps may falter
And my soul athirst may be,
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! A spring of joy I see.
All the way my Savior leads me,
Oh, the fullness of His love!
Perfect rest to me is promised
In my Father’s house above.
When my spirit, clothed immortal,
Wings its flight to realms of day
This my song through endless ages:
Jesus led me all the way.
