Acts 2:1-4
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
In Luke 24:49 Jesus referring to this same occasion says, And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. I like how it says it in the Christian Standard Bible-And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.” The infilling of The Holy Spirit is an empowerment. Notice, in Acts 1:8 -Jesus speaking after his resurrection- But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Now, we know he doesn't just come upon, but now he comes within. John 14:17- Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. Notice, what Jesus called the Holy Spirit -The Spirit of Truth. And why the world can not receive him, because it seeth him not. It's hard for the world to accept what they can not see. That's why Jesus said, John 4:48Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. But, remember The Holy Spirit is an empowerment. There's power on the inside of you. In Acts 6:5,8 notice speaking of Stephen-- And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch. And in verse 8 it says, And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. A lot of scriptures when they refer to The Holy Spirit it's always associated with power. Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. In 1 Corinthians 2:4,5 Paul said, And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: 5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Paul said I didn't just preach I also demonstrated, and he could demonstrate because he had the spirit/the power in him. When the spirit/power is in you then you can demonstrate. Well, now he is in you 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? The same spirit that hoovered over the face of the deep in Genesis 1, the same spirit that Jesus said, the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works is in you now. And he wants to express himself through you. Romans 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. Notice, when the spirit of God came into you, his love came in you. But, you have to yield to this things of God. Just like one scripture says, we have the mind of Christ 1 Corinthians 2:16, but then in Philippians 2:5 it says, Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. So, even though the things of God are in you, by the spirit of God in you you still have to yield to them for them to work in you. In John 14:26 Jesus said, But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. He quickens the word to you, it's not just you thinking something up, no, he quickens things to your mind. And he can bring things to your mind so quickly and in abundance until you have to rush to get something to write them down. The meanings of comfortor is intercessor(one who intervenes on behalf of another, especially by prayer). Advocate(one who pleads on someone else's behalf). Now, the intercessor/the advocate is in you and he works through you. Romans 8:26,27 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. He speaks through you. The Holy Spirit wants to take hold of your tongue. Remember, mankind has the authority so he needs the mouth of a person. Spirits without a body doesn't have the authority to speak and have it come to pass in the earth. That has been reserved for mankind.
And a lot of what happened at Pentacost has to do with your tongue. Notice, cloven tongues on fire rested on them all. When they all were filled with the Holy Spirit the first thing that happened was they spoke with other tongues. Which backs up what Jesus said, whatever you are filled with will find expression by your tongue or out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. In James 3:6-8 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Notice, it says no man can tame the tongue and Numbers 23:19 says, God is not a man so He can tame it, from the inside. God wants to work from the inside-out not from the outside-in. Romans 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. That's inside-out. But, he's not authorized to act until you exercise your God given authority. In the beginning when he hoovered over the face of the deep, nothing was done until God said, "Let there be light." In Acts 16:16-18 it reads, And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: 17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. 18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. This is the same Paul in Acts 19 when those men tried to cast out a devil, 13 Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. 14 And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew, and chief of the priests, which did so.15 And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye? 16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
Notice, that devil knew who Paul was so he must have been casting out devils before, but in this case he allowed that devil to greive him after many days. The same thing he did after many days he could have just as easily done day one. And the Holy Spirit in him did nothing until he opened his mouth and exercised his authority. Jesus said in John 14:10 it was the Father in him (The Holy Spirit) that was doing the work. And yet even Jesus in Mark 5- And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. 2 And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: 4 Because that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with stones. 6 But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and worshipped him, 7 And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not. 8 For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou unclean spirit. 9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. 10 And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. 11 Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. 12 And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. 13 And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand and were choked in the sea. Notice, those devils knew who Jesus was, but did they move, no. They didn't move until he opened his mouth and spoke, until he exercised his God given authority. He had to come as a man to have authority in the earth. And notice The Holy Spirit in him did nothing until he exercised his God given authority. So, if Jesus had to exercise his authority, so do we.
Back in Acts 2:13-18 it says, Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; 17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. Peter told them this is not a new thing, God had this planned a long time ago. You see in Joel 2:28,29 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. Notice, God did leave out woman. Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Woman is just as one with Christ as any man. The Holy Ghost can work through a woman just as he can work through a man, as a matter of fact in Judges chapter 4:1-9 it reads: 4 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, when Ehud was dead. 2 And the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles. 3 And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel. 4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. 5 And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedeshnaphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the Lord God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun? 7 And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand. 8 And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go. 9 And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the Lord shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh. God can work through a woman just like He can work through a man. I think she was the only female Judge.
Now, notice in Luke 7:24-28 it says, 24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? 25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. 26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. 27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. All the old testament prophets Isaiah/Jeremiah/Moses all the others up until John never had God inside the best they could have was God upon them. In the old testament they had the ark of the covenant where God dwelled between the cherubims- Numbers 7:89 And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him. Now, God doesn't have to speak from outside and you don't have to go somewhere to talk to him, now He can talk to you from inside of you and you carry him where ever you go. In closing if you didn't get anything just think try to get a grasp of who you have dwelling on the inside of you, The Most High. If anybody has a low opinion of themselves, God thought of you worthy enough to dwell in, make his home in. That should tell you something. My closing scripture is Colossians 1:26-27 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: 27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. I like one translation of that 27th verse-VOICE He decided to make known to them His blessing to the nations; the glorious riches of this mystery is the indwelling of the Anointed in you! The very hope of glory. We have the authority and God has the power, so we are co laborers or laborers together with God. But, you have to yield your authority to his will for him to work through you legally. You have to submit yourselves under his mighty hand.
It is not God's will that any should perish. And I wouldn't want to end this article without giving someone the opportunity to receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. It's very easy just pray: Dear God- I know I have sinned and I now turn from them and I invite Jesus to come into my heart (Revelation 3:20). He died for my sins and you have raised him from the dead and I now confess that Jesus is my Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9,10). I thank you for saving me, Amen
