Personhood Redefined
Three times in recent history personhood has been redefined and stripped away from a group of people. Their very rights as a human have been taken away by men who had no right to do so. This has resulted in enslavement, torture, and murder of millions and millions of people, simply because of race or age.
Dred Scott
In 1857, the Supreme Court of the United States of America, handed down a 7-2 decision called the “Dred Scott Decision”. This horrific and deadly decision declared that black people were not full human persons under the Constitution of the United States. Under this ruling black people were considered no better than a piece of property or livestock and could be sold, traded, beaten or killed by their owners.
The Nazis
In the early 1900's and through World War 2, the Nazi Party led by Adolph Hitler slowly stripped Jews of their personhood. Jewish people were considered non-citizens and sub-human. Their businesses were boycotted and taken away. Eventually they were herded into ghettos and eventually into concentration camps. Families were separated and forced into labor camps, working for the Nazis. They were tortured and slaughtered in an effort to cleanse Europe of all Jews. Once again a group of men lifted themselves above God and redefined personhood.
Memorials
All over the world are memorials that remind us of the horrible actions that took place in our world. In Fredericksburg, VA there is a block cemented into the sidewalk on one of the main streets of Old Town. This block was once used as a trading post for goods in Fredericksburg, these goods included humans. This block is not there to glorify what took place on that corner but to remind us that we cannot ever go back to a time like that. In Washington, DC there is a museum called the American Holocaust Museum. The first time I went through this museum I was overwhelmed with tears. The walls had a huge areas filled with the actual shoes worn by people killed in concentration camps. You cannot help but be very moved as you see rooms full of actual bunks and guardrails from the concentration camps. One area holds a set of railroad tracks and a railroad car that was once used to carry Jews to the death camps. Again these items are not there to glorify what happened in any way, but to make sure we as a society never allow such hatred and destruction of human life to take place.
Too Late
Unfortunately reminders and memorials like these have not worked and we as a society have returned to genocide. On January, 22 of 1973 the United States Supreme Court once again handed down a 7-2 decision that stripped away personhood from an entire group of people. Roe vs. Wade declared in very similar language to Dred Scott, that children in their mother's wombs were not full human persons under the Constitution of the United States. Since that day almost 50 million children have been slaughtered by surgical abortion. Over 1.2 million children a year, over 4,000 killed every day. Over 1/3 of this generation has been wiped out in the name of choice.
