Hello,

Recently I have really been buckling down on my religion. Going to church.. Reading My Bible, Praying, etc. I've really been doing everything a good Christian should do. I've read so much of the bible it's not even funny. Although, the thing troubling me is that I've had to stop doing so many things I enjoy. I mean it's getting ridiculous. First I realize how much blasphemy is in rock music, then I realize that Television is a work of the devil, I've realized that basically everything short of sitting in a chair and reading the bible is sinful. It's almost like Christianity is ruining my life.
It is supposed to bring happiness right? I'm seriously consider converting to some other religion because It's just robbing me off so much that I enjoy. Before I started making all these realizations I was so happy. Now life sucks. It's had a bad effect on the entire household. I've set so many rules for my children, they don't laugh or play anymore. It's almost like where taking this whole Christianity thing waaaaaaay too far. I think we just need to back off and stop being such fanatics, But I don't want to go to hell. WHAT SHOULD I DO?!!?!?!?1111

@Manofthelord - Dont apply all the rules as long as you know what you are doing, dont adopt the ancient rules especially on your childrens instead you should show them what really happiness in the presence of Our Good Lord.

Nothing by force everything through love

Religion is conviction born out of experience of God and His love. So this same love and experiecne have to transmitted patiently. No one can force convictions and experiences on others but by one's life of conviction and love can become an agent of transformation in the lives of others. Remain close to God and God will keep Himself close to you and help you to come out of th problem.

Hello brothers Man Of The Lord,

I kinda understand what you mean. But if you are overdoing something, then you're follow God's words. In Galatian 6:22-23, it clearly said that we need to have self-control. When I read your post, my first thought was you're overdoing things that make you so tire that it's no longer a pleasure to read God's Words, but it became bitter and sour when you read his Words. The way I see it is, do everything by faith. You don't have to read one whole book everyday. The important things is to apply who you've learned you can read a verse and meditate and learn how to apply in an everyday life, that would be more effective than reading a lot and wear yourself down. So yes reading the Bibles is good. But allow yourself to have sometime of your own, God don't want you to sit at home and just read the Bible and sit there and do nothing.

It's true that TV is bad. But I found watching Football and Baseball relaxing or even National Geography. So basically find some thing you like that's clean fun. Don't over do anything including reading the Bible, and make it into a torture. One more things is listen to him each day and see what he want you to do and allow him to lead you. I'm sure after you have done these things you'll find peace. Just don't over do everything. I hope this help, God Bless you brother.

Good day brother, I think firstly you should realize what Christianity is, it is not rules and a way of life, but is the act of following a Master, named Jesus.

John 3:16
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life

You may have read the above verse once or twice in your life, or maybe more than that, but did you really read it? That verse in the Holy Word of God says that we will have eternal life when we believe in the Son, Jesus.

Do what? Believe in Him. We have to believe, have faith, follow out master.

Do you want to believe in Jesus the Lord of lords and then turn your back on Him and deny Him?

Luke 9:23-27
23Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. 25What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self? 26If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."

If you deny Jesus, He will deny you. That's the point, nothing else, if you believe in Him, you will live eternally.
I think the time has come for you to stop thinking about yourself and what you are losing or forfeiting and start communicating with God. Did you know the Bible lives? It's a living Book, the only living Book. Stop reading the Bible, start "reading" it, with carefull prayer, sprititual thoughtfulness, comprehension which you can only receive from God, love the Lord Almighty with your entire heart, soul and mind.

Live a life for Jesus, forsake your desires, become a house for the Lord. Brother, this is the Christian life and I don't think you have ever known what "Christianity" really is. It's belief in Jesus Christ, that's what it is.

Your children should play, freely, leave them be. Be a father who laid down the rules, but not at the expense of having fun. Tell them what you read in the Word of God, tell them the great things that Jesus said. Sing songs to them, ask them to teach you new songs.

Become like a child before God, live for God.

God bless you brother
Much love

I see you are new here, manofthelord. If I have not already extended a welcome to you I do so now. Welcome brother.

Making a reply to your post, I am sorry to read that Christianity has brought you so much bondage. This is far from normal.

My first reaction is to question the church you are attending. Something must be wrong in that area? You need to find a church where the life of Jesus is being ministered. Where the people know the joy of the LOrd. Remember the bible says " the joy of the LOrd is our strength"

Glad to hear of your lovely desire to follow the Master, and your scripture reading. But maybe like the man in the Acts of the Apostles, you need someone to help you with it. Acts 8:26

God Bless You........Keep in Touch

Dear Brother

There is good and bad in all and everything that surrounds us. The commandments have endured throughout the Millennia but always remember the Bible was written to communicate in a literal sense with Christians who lived in diferent times.Let the love of God dictate your life rather than a set of rules taken literally from ancient scripture. In this modern world there are many ways to live your witness without feeling punished for doing so.God is life.Pray to Him always but use your common sense.Anything that is forced on us will cause us to rebel and then you really can fall into the hands of the evil one. Each day I dedicate all that I am, see, hear and do to my Lord.I live my faith and being human I fall short on many occasions but I always keep the love of Christ as the driving force in my life. There are inherent dangers associated with all forms of fundamentalism. There are many influences, media, tv, music that are driven by the lowest common denominator in terms of morals, values and ethics but the love of God triumphs over all as long as we stay faithfull to His spirit, guidance and love. You can but advise your children and lead by example but always use common sense to support your reasoning.God will guide you always.

Nicholas.

Thank you all for your replies to Manofthelord post. They were all good replies with excellent advise, which helped me a lot too.

God bless you all.

Brother, there is key passages in the Old and New Testaments that may help you see why you are not enjoying your new life in Christ. (the OT law is NOT for the NT church, but this is written for our example)

Isa 58:2 Day after day, you worship God and seem eager to learn his teachings. You act like a nation that wants to do right by obeying his laws. You ask him about justice, and say you enjoy worshiping the LORD.
You wonder why the LORD pays no attention when you go without eating and act humble. But on those same days that you give up eating, you think only of yourselves and abuse your workers. You even get angry and ready to fight. No wonder God won't listen to your prayers!
Do you think the LORD wants you to give up eating and to act as humble as a bent-over bush? Or to dress in sackcloth and sit in ashes? Is this really what he wants on a day of worship?
I'll tell you what it really means to worship the LORD. Remove the chains of prisoners who are chained unjustly. Free those who are abused!
Share your food with everyone who is hungry; share your home with the poor and homeless. Give clothes to those in need; don't turn away your relatives.
Then your light will shine like the dawning sun, and you will quickly be healed. Your honesty will protect you as you advance, and the glory of the LORD will defend you from behind.
When you beg the LORD for help, he will answer, "Here I am!" Don't mistreat others or falsely accuse them or say something cruel.
Give your food to the hungry and care for the homeless. Then your light will shine in the dark; your darkest hour will be like the noonday sun.

You see where God is trying to show His people that LOVE is His law? You have your focus in the wrong place, it is entirely upon yourself, and not upon Christ, and others. The one and only law that should govern your whole life (family, work, play) is love. This is very the teaching of the one you are trying to follow.

Col 2:20 If you have died with Christ to the basic principles of the world, why are you submitting to its decrees as though you still lived in the world?
"Don't handle this! Don't taste or touch that!"
All of these things will be destroyed through use because they are based on human commands and teachings.
These things have the appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion, humility, and harsh treatment of the body, but they have no value against self-indulgence.

Again, here you see the word 'self', and how all the things you are doing, or not doing, do nothing to take the focus off self. Many preachers/teachers do not truly understand or believe this teaching of Christ. It is quite possible to spend your whole life going to 'church' (you are the church, its not a building) reading your bible, and yes even praying, and have never really 'LOVED' God or others. How can this be? Because true love and worship for God means to humble yourself and SERVE.

Seek a relationship with Christ...and when you seek Him (and quit seeking to just become more religious) with all your heart, you will find the joy and rest there is in knowing Him.

John 17 Jesus prayed: "And now I am coming to you, and I say these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in themselves...
I am not asking you to take them out of the world but to protect them from the evil one. (notice this does not say the evils of the world, there is only one evil, and it can only effect the life that is not governed by love)
Sanctify them by the truth. Your word is truth.
Just as you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world...
I have given them the glory that you gave me, so that they may be one, just as we are one. ..
I made your name known to them, and will continue to make it known, so that the love you have for me may be in them and I myself may be in them."

Blessings

I would just like to confirm what sister Coconut told you, the Bible speaks clearly about this issue.

Romans 13:9-10
9The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet,"and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself."10Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Brother, I wonder if you are not getting caught up in some "rules" dictated by a particular denomination. Our Christian walk is not easy. We fall many times, but if we continue to have faith in God, He will pick us up, each and every time. God knows that none of us is perfect. If you are striving for perfection you will find yourself in a constant state of frustration. It is true that the majority of TV and movies are garbage. However, there are some decent programs your entire family can watch and enjoy, as well as decent music. It is not necessary for you to limit your life to only attending church or church related activities. Children need to play and explore, that is a pivotal part of the maturation process. There is nothing wrong with children playing in the yard, riding bikes, skating or participating in sports at school.

Following Jesus should enhance your life, not make you miserable. If you are miserable, something is wrong. As someone who is far from perfect and has fallen many times, I can tell you that Jesus is the only way! I simply can't imagine my life without Him. Pray and ask the Lord for guidance. He will help you through this if you are sincere. He knows what is in your heart. I pray that God will strengthen you. Whatever you do, please do not turn away from Jesus and His gift of salvation.

Amen Teraside and Faithin1

Now that I have a few moments, I want to expound a little further on my reply this morning...

Christ came to set men free. The man who desires to live for God ( God is love) will choose to obey the law of love in everything he does. I am talking here to men and women who are converted, for the unconverted man does not know this law, nor can he obey it, for it is foreign to his sinful nature.

Satan is an angel of light and he doesnt mind his preachers talking about JESUS, as long as the message being preached doesnt set Gods people free. (wanted to throw that in there because it underscores the following)

There are some christians who would say, you must go to 'church' when theres church, and pray for a certain amount of time every day, and read your Bible every day...and in essence this reduces your relationship with God to a performance schedule, and you must be sure to have the right amount of check ins, and check outs on that time card at the end of the day.
NO NO NO, emphatically NO! That is NOT relationship! Rather, relationship to God (as with a husband and wife) has one guiding factor, that is love.

Do you know God courts us? Yes, He calls our names, He draws us to Him, He shows us His love in a myrid of ways, and even lets us go thru difficulties, often with not a soul around who can help us, just to give us a taste of how much we need Him. And He waits for us to respond.

Now I didnt always love God, but I grew to love Him. One day I began to realize that I am never more at peace then when I felt His presence around me. So I began to long to spend all my time with Him. (I think thats when He probably smiled and said now you are getting it!)
The more time I spent with Him, the more I learned I could trust Him, and the more wonderful He became to me, and His love and goodness and grace still continues to amaze me, so our relationship has grown stronger. Now as I go thru my day, I find myself talking to Him, about anything and everything, and listening for the sound of His voice...He talks to me thru so many people and things around me. And if a day, or even week, goes by, where I havent had time to kneel down and pray, (it happens) well thats ok...I spend all my days with Him. This is freedom, this is love, and this is the rest Jesus promised for those who would believe. It is true that, as it is with a man and his wife, that you do need your times of intimacy, where its just you and God. God may draw you aside when He needs to talk to you, or you may feel the need to get alone with God, either way, the heart that loves God will know.

1Timothy 4 Now the Spirit says clearly that in the last times some people will abandon the faith by following deceitful spirits, the teachings of demons, and the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences have been burned by a hot iron. (everything becomes evil to them) They will try to stop people from marrying and from eating certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

For everything God created is good, and nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

If you continue to point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished by the words of the faith and the healthy teaching that you have followed closely.
Do not have anything to do with godless myths and fables of old women, but train yourself in godliness. Physical exercise is of limited value, but Godliness is very dear, A pledge of life, both there and here.

This saying is trustworthy and deserves complete acceptance.
To this end we work hard and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, that is, of those who believe. These are the things you must insist on and teach.

Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young,(Timothy, the one being addressed here was young, but this wise and godly instruction is so important to every follower of Christ, young and old) but be an example for other believers in your speech, behavior, love, faithfulness, and purity...

Think on these things. Devote your life to them so that everyone can see your progress. Pay close attention to your life and your teaching. Persevere in these things, for if you do this, you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.

Speech, behavior, love, faithfulness, and purity.

Let your speech be governed by love.
Let your behaviour governed by love.
Let your love be governed by love. (not fake)
Let your faithfulness be governed by love. (not serving God or your fellowman because it will save you, but because of your love for them)
Let your purity be governed by love. (Purity is a state of heart, which governs your conduct in all things)

Now a televsion is not evil, but what you choose to watch on it can be. Evil is not contained in objects, but only in the hearts of men. "As a man thinks in his heart, so is he"
If you enjoy television, movies, plays, or any other source of media, or arts, be sure what you are enjoying is wholesome entertainment, the same goes for your children, for you are not loving them if you dont guard their young minds.
If a home has no television, but the atmosphere the parents create is governed by anger and quarreling, then you have failed to guard your home from true evil. Let a mans love for his wife be fervent, let his love for his children be as fervent... and the moderation and discipline and self control in all things, that he demands first of himself, will teach his children more about godliness than any restraint he may impose upon them, and without a doubt, his will be a godly home.

If you enjoy being outdoors, enjoying nature, sports etc...barbqueing in the back yard with your neighbor (even if hes a sinner) ...do so...again, keeping your speech, actions, wholesome in all that you do.

What does wholesome mean according to scripture?

Phi 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

God gives man all things to enjoy, but if he spends his life only for his own pleasure, then he has not truly loved his neighbor, or those around him, whoever they may be, has he?
Scripture teaches moderation in all things. A good godly life, is one where a man balances his work, family time, play time, and is always willing to help those around him, no matter what 'time' it is.

There is so much we could say on the subject of what it means to be faithful to God, and live a holy life...but if a man lets love be his guide, he will never stray far from God. If anyone doesnt believe this, then read the love chapter in 1Co 13, and find that a mans very faith and hope are wrapped up and complete in love.

I do want to add this, because its such an integral part of this subject ...

1Ti 6:17 Tell those who are rich in the present world not to be arrogant and not to place their confidence in anything as uncertain as riches. Instead, let them place their confidence in God, who lavishly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, and to share.

By doing this they store up a treasure for themselves that is a good foundation for the future, so that they can take hold of the life that is real.
Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the pointless discussions and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge.
Although some claim to have it, they have abandoned the faith.
May grace be with all of you!

Welcome to the forums MOL. GOD bless you. You've been given great wisdom and as you can see...Christianity is a life that can be enjoyed MORE than a life without Jesus. There is no doubt about it. Now, some things we are not to do any longer (those would be part of the old self, the former man) which makes sense. However, let me clarify some things that I feel.

- I watch tv. I just watch shows that are not stupid and degrading
(cosby, full house, family matters for example)
- I play computer games and enjoy them much but avoid the kind that are garbage (like Grand Theft Auto is full of degenerate attitudes and cussing)
- I listen to rock music and yes, probably not the best but does that send me to hell? No. Does it affect me? If it doesn't, I won't be here arguing with myself. If it does affect me negatively, I will have to pursue action and not listen to it any more.
- I exercise daily and weightlift. Now does that make me prideful to enjoy making myself look good? Do I assume I am lustful in a gym full of women who dress provocatively (not all, but ample)? No. I can still enjoy my hobby of weightlifting without feeling condemned.

In Jesus Christ, we are free from condemnation brother.

Dude, my goodness, what happened? "buckling down on your christianity?", and what happens when its all nicely "buckled down?". Then what? You are called to liberty and freedom, knowing God is about enjoying all the things that God has created. You have a life, a plan, a purpose and it is incredible. Put everything down for a little while, all the expectations, what ifs, im nots- all of it and just stop. Re-focus on the Lord for a minute, then ask Him, what does He want you to do. Tel Him you love Him, you just wanna do whats right, the whole thing is an awful mess and youre not doing it that way anymore cause youre tired of it all. Then give the Lord your undivided attention and ask Him for His advice. The Lord is so awesome, Trust Him and He will show you. Walking with the Lord is simple, its fun, challenging and unlike anything else. There is nothing in the world that can compare to it. And dont be so hard on your self, have a look at the scriptures, wow, out of the whole bible only Jesus was without sin, the rest of them were just ordinary people like you and I, and some of them really werent all that in their godly conduct. The Lord knows this, only too well, that we are unable to anything in our own strength, thats why He left the Holy Spirit, who is there to help for the asking. Dont worry bout not being good enough, and what people think, just be honest and open in your conversations with God, He will do the rest. With Love and encouragement- Bonnie ps: and just before I go, You cant please everyone, someone is always going to think, you should be this that or the other. Just be yourself, do your best, and God will take care of the rest.

Christianity is not suppose to be easy. If a person is having no trails or problems in his live, then he may be on the wrong path. The bible says: "The path to the gate is narrow and difficult". Christianity should be difficult and hard - some false religions try and make it "easy" for them.

About settings rules for children, it is good to set rules for them to obey and disciple them when they break a rule. They will become mature in this way, even they don't like it. Their "sinful" nature hates rules.

Things can be used for good and evil, just depending on how we use them.. if it is separating you from God, then it is not good. I had experience with "World of Warcraft", and it wasn't good. It had separated me from God.

"It's almost like Christianity is ruining my life." - I always think like that in the past. I had to stop things I enjoyed the most (that is my sinful self). Transformation from old-self to new-self can be difficult. Satan will try and stop you by giving you thoughts. Once you're there, it will get easier.

Continue to walk in his ways, and at the end you will be pleased with the results.

Galatians 6:9
"So don't get tired of doing what is good. Don't get discouraged and give up, for we will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time."

I hope he will read them one day, since he hasn't been online since Jan 2007...

I thought long and hard regarding your statement, please forgive me for not being absolutely clear. 1st of all, I am assuming that we are on the same page here, I am talking about the Lord Jesus of the bible, the one who went to the cross and shed His blood for my sins and then rose again after the third day and now sits at the right hand of the Father. I am sure that we are. The next thing is that yes, we will have troubles in this life, Jesus said, that in this world you will have trials and tribulations, and then straight after that He said, but cheer up, that means, dont worry, be happy, because I have overcome the world. (John 16:33.) Jesus also said you need to be humble like a little child before Him, and as a matter of fact He said if you dont recieve the Kingdom of God as a little child, you wont enter in. (Mark 10:15) Little children dont much care whats happening around them, as long as they have mum or dad in sight, they are at peace and it should be the same with the Lord, not complicated and difficult.
In fact, Jesus was most upset at the Pharisees and religious leaders of His day, (ummmm, Hypocrites was what He called them),who would go to all sorts of trouble to convert one person, only to make the walk so difficult for them, that they would give up in frustration at not being able to meet all the requirements people placed on them, and found themselves going to hell, (Mathew 23:15) and that is what happens over and over again with christians, especially young christians. Christians are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. Its not very salty for the world to see, broken down, tired, overwrought and powerless christians. And many, many times Jesus said, that He came to set the captives free, to heal the broken-hearted, to restore sight to the blind and to bring liberty and freedom, (Luke 4:18). He came that you might have life and have it more abundantly. (John 10;10). Jesus says that He is the Good Shepherd and He will never give up on you, and that more than anything else in the world He desires to be with you, hang out with you and give you a rich, fulfilling life, not necessarily monetary, but rich in knowing that no matter what - God is on your side, This is what brings peace, security and inner joy, despite our circumstances. When we read Psalm 23, this is a classic example of how we can be in our walk with the Lord. The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not lack for anything, He will feed me, guide me and look after my needs.
2nd: He makes me lie down in fresh green pastures, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, not a barren, dry landscape in sight, He leads me beside still waters, again, still, peaceful and quiet and restfull.
3rd:He refreshes me and restores me, He knows things are difficult, that is why we all need to spend time with Him regardless of the circumstances, cause it is refreshing and strengthening.
4: He then leads me and LEADS is the operative word here, into the paths of righteousness, into right standing with Him. no slogging it out on my own, trying to be the ultimate christian, by being a constant victim to the perils of life. Nope; Jesus is saying, if you come to me with all your heart, I will lead you in how you should be, and show you what to do. Why? , The Lord does this cause He wants to, cause He is good and gracious, all powerful, all knowledgable, fun and He genuinely loves me for me.That in itself, is cause for anyone to celebrate and be happy.
4: and then the next verse, Yes, even though I walk through the sunless valley of death, and that as most christians know, including me, it is a ghastly place to be, again Jesus says, Dont worry, because I am right here with you, and I will defend you, no matter what happens.
5: and then this little beauty of scripture, You, (The Lord HIMSELF) prepare a table before me, IN THE PRESENCE OF MY ENEMIES. So here we are, battle raging all around, enemies everywhere, they can see me and I can see them and what is the Lord doing, He is preparing to have tea with me. Your relationship with Him is so rich, that here you are, having tea with the Lord of Hosts, Saviour of the world, in the very middle of all the dramas of the world. My head is then annointed with oil, cool and refreshing in the natural, symbolic of the Holy Spirit and the call of God on my life in the supernatural. My cup runs over, I have enough of everything I need , cause I trust Him.
Then the last bit, surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me, all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LOrd forever.
Yes, trials do come and go, but they wil take place no matter what, not just cause you are a christian, and the key to getting through them is having a relationship with the Lord and worrying about His opinion and not everyone elses and that is easy and very simple.
Walking in the ways of the world is hard yakka and trying to do things yourself in being a "good christian" is even harder yakka, but a relationship and walking with the Lord is not hard yakka at all, its easy, liberating, and exciting, and I stand by that.
