Police Repeatedly Raid Church to Stop “Praise and Worship” Music – TMLC Files Federal Lawsuit..March 11, 2008

ANN ARBOR, MI — Without a warrant or other legal authorization, uniformed police officers conducted several raids on Faith Baptist Church in Waterford Township, Michigan, and threatened to prosecute several young Christian musicians for disorderly conduct – because the Township prosecutor objected to the playing of contemporary religious music. “Praise and worship” music is a central part of Faith Baptist’s religious services.

The Thomas More Law Center, a national public interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, filed a federal lawsuit on Monday against the Waterford Township supervisor, prosecutor and two high ranking police officials. The lawsuit was prompted by the series of police incursions into the church and threats by the Township prosecutor to raid the church every time music was heard coming from it.

Richard Thompson, President and Chief Counsel of the Law Center, observed, “Uniformed police officers entering a church during religious services and young church members being threatened with prosecution is something that happens in Communist China – not in America.”

Continued Thompson, “It is clear that Waterford Township authorities targeted Faith Baptist Church because of the type of religious music it uses in its services. Some of the individual police officers involved in the raids – apparently more sensitive to the constitutional protections surrounding religion than were their superiors – personally apologized afterwards.”

Faith Baptist Church, headed by Pastor Jim Combs, has a congregation of 10,000 members and conducts religious services on three different campuses. The police raids targeted the Waterford Township campus with 5,000 members.

Pastor Jim Combs first contacted the Thomas More Law Center in late October 2007, after the first in a series of police raids.

During a Wednesday night youth service, uniformed Township police, led by the Township prosecutor, burst into the Church’s sanctuary where the Church’s “Praise and Worship” band was warming up. The prosecutor ordered the officers to take the names and addresses of all the young people on stage so that they could be charged with “disorderly conduct.”

The very next Sunday, Waterford Township police again raided Faith Baptist, this time during the Pastor Comb’s evening sermon. Officers were about to disrupt the services and remove the “Praise and Worship” band members and order them to surrender their driver’s licenses for personal information. However, an Assistant Pastor volunteered to bring the members to the police so as not to create an uproar among the congregation.

The Township prosecutor was caught conducting personal surveillance on the Church from his parked car just days later.

The lawsuit, filed Monday, alleges that Waterford Township officials violated Faith Baptist Church’s and the band members’ rights to Free Exercise of religion, Free Speech and Freedom of Association under both the Michigan and the United States Constitutions, and that Waterford Township’s actions have chilled Plaintiffs’ ability to worship according to their religious beliefs. Plaintiffs are asking the court to permanently prohibit further police raids and for monetary damages.

Brandon Bolling, the Law Center attorney handling the case, stated, “The Township prosecutor was very explicit: he told the pastors that churches should not play ‘rock music,’ and threatened that each time he heard music coming from the church he would conduct a raid.”

This is unbelievable. One thing though to keep in mind is that this so called township prosecutor is in a way acting the way apostle Paul acted prior to his conversion on the way to Damascus. Its nothing surprising, although definitely disturbing. The man is acting like a complete antichrist without a doubt.

Let's pray for the Father's will be done, which will include justice and hopefully repentance from the township prosecutor.

Wow! You're right, Chad, self-righteousness run riot. This is the sort of thing that we read of occuring in the Middle East, in Asia, and in South America.

Lord, we pray that justice would be served in this situation. We pray that pastor Combs and all the members of that church would rise up and shout "No!" into the ears of township officials.

Music and worship

I remember having a discussion with a preacher who believed that no music should be used in the worship of the Lord. I quoted the following:

1 Praise the LORD.
Praise God in His sanctuary;
praise Him in His mighty heavens.

2 Praise Him for His acts of power;
praise Him for His surpassing greatness.

3 Praise Him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise Him with the harp and lyre,

4 praise Him with tambourine and dancing,
praise Him with the strings and flute,

5 praise Him with the clash of cymbals,
praise Him with resounding cymbals.

6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD.

--------------------------------

It's not the beat or rhythm that determines the worth of the music, it's the intent of the musician and the message of any lyrics.

If I'm not mistaken, a police oficer must place his hand on the Bible and swear an oath (to God) that he will uphold the constitution of the United States of America. Those police officers were in direct violation of that oath when they entered that church, for the Constitution protects freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, and freedom of speech.
Those officers need to take a stand against thier superior officers and refuse to break thier oath to uphold the Constitution.

Wow is all I can muster for this, the saddest part is, that I am not totally surprised by this ridicules act, what a sad day indeed. I pray that God's will be done in this situation.

In Christ,

NC

Never surprises me anymore, which is so sad to be able to say

I will keep them in my prayers

God Bless and Much Love xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox

The prosecutor should be happy that it wasn't King David dancing with abandon, (possibly naked) in front of the Ark and everyone...
Look what happened to David's first wife who scolded him- he left her presence forever and she was childless.
I hope this prosecutor realizes that freedom of religion also includes music with drums, bass, electric guitars, etc.
Question: Does he do this with rock concerts?
If not, sounds like favoritism at the least, conspiracy or worse.

Lord, soften his heart towards the freedoms You provide. Worshiping in spirit and in truth is what's important, not instruments that are played. Thank You for these young people who are willing to stand up and be counted, whatever the cost. Bless them, continue to unite them. Let them be seen as peacemakers in this time of conflict. In the Name of Jesus

At face value, it's an abuse of civil power for purely selfish reasons. The Police Chief would have a defense if the church in question had violated a noise bylaw. Do some reading on Senator Joe McCarthy. I like to think of it as Communist America.

Cheers,
John

This guy is an elected official in a township, which is usually a smaller political entity than a city, which means that rock concerts are probably not staged in a place that's under his jurisdiction.

It sounds as if he is trying to be a big duck in a small pond.

Despite that I don't like church hymn playing in rock-music style, I would be pleased if young men can worship and praise the Lord devotedly through it.
I pray that the prosecutor will reconcile with the pastor and glorify the Lord together.

WOW!!!

I have to say that I am almost speechless. How far are us christians willing to let a small percentage of non-believers push us?? It has been said that 86% of americans are christians, so why do we let 14% push us around. I've been thinking for a while about how contplacent we've become. I think that all believers should stand together in protest against all the athieistic laws that are being passed everyday. We spend so much time concentrating on the differences between denominations that we are oblivious to the fact that satan is closing in. My preacher said in a sermon one Sunday, refering to the different denominations, that if they are not against us then they must be for us. Some food for thought.

GOD Bless!!!!!

I agree completely. What i was wondering about the article was is this man actually a Christian? I mean i've seen the debate here in the South many times about contemp. music verses traditional music. He could be a fundamentalist who believes only in traditional music. J/W

IMHO, this is just a taste of what Christians worldwide will be facing more and more and more. Our church implements both contemporary and traditional praise and worship and it works well for us. We are in a small town, with a church on every corner... but I feel that there is "something in the air" and that we had best be prepared to stand up for Christ. That or possibly be left to face the consequences. I am getting on in years and really don't care what the atheistic populace may say about me. But I will continue to try to win them over with love and kindness, but I will not allow them to dictate when and where I may worship my Lord without a fight.

Things like this happening in this day and age, really isn't surprising to me either. It's obviously the spirit of the Anti-Christ, seeing as how we don't have long to go before our Lord's return, we can expect a lot more of things like this to happen! And it'll be worse. Separating Church and state? Sound familiar? It's starting people, just be strong in the Lord, and things will happen like their suppose to! God bless!
