For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises in a skillful psalm and with understanding. Psalm 47:7 AMPC

Like Psalm 46, Psalm 47 keeps the theme of God’s sovereign power but shifts our response from trust to praise. In ancient times, a song was most often a story. The psalms often set God’s explopits to music—how He famously delivered His people from slavery and protected them from the most fearsome army in the known world.

The reason is simple: We need reminders. We need to tell ourselves early and often that God is God, all-powerful and all-knowing. His character is evident in His deeds too, and in His great mercy and kindness, along with His holiness and majesty.

Greatness inspires us. Whether it’s an excellent performance or a fruitful project, we want to witness meaningful things done well. That’s God’s stick-in-trade, so the things that make us stand and shout in joy and approval should point us to Him. Even better, we know Him—the great Creator, Physician, Engineer, and Artist—so we should let Him know we know.

God’s greatness demands our proper response: “O clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of triumph and songs of joy! For the Lord Most High excites terror, awe, and dread; He is a great King over all the earth. For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises in a skillful psalm and with understanding.” (Psalm 47:1-2,7)

Prayer: God Most High, I celebrate You—Your majesty and power, Your gracious sacrificial love, Your ultimate victory. No one is like You.
