I volunteered at my last church's food bank for 6 years every week.
I've learned a lot about Food retail and distribution over many years.
I just learned of this recently:
Second Harvest Food Bank has been around for a long time.
There's not so much as a food shortage than there is a problem with access to it.
There are numerous food banks across America.
If I have to pick a favorite part of the Bible it would be:
Matthew 25-30
35 For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. 36 I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.’
37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[a] you were doing it to me!’
Food banks too often take in other people's food which has been sitting in their home for a long time which may be close to it's Best By date.
All of these banks and orgs do best with money and they have the contacts to get food for very low cost.
If you want to help, donate money and many stores have programs. Link your loyalty card to an org and it will donate X to it for every $ you spend.
Food that is past it's edible date but not rotten can be composted OR if bulk produce and few others to a farmer who will feed it to his cattle.
Reducing food waste should be a part of everyone's lives especially ours.
