Question concerning copyright law?

What is the law concerning copyrights when posting on a forum? If I give some quotes from a book and give the credit, am I required to get permission from the publisher?

There's a principle of fair use, which allows copyright material to be used for educational purposes - anyone can apply this when quoting others.

Most authors are hungry for their work to have exposure and publicity, so welcome being quoted - as long as there is attribution and a link.
