I was a long term atheist and would passionately defend my viewpoint and genuinely considered anyone with a faith was probably a little bit mad. Fortunately the good Lord got hold of me and put me right! I have turned from big bang theorist / evolutionist to creationist. Years of study make this the only logical conclusion for me.
Anyhow, what evangelism strategies worked on me? None of them!
Quoting scripture at me - “I don’t believe your bible ( I called it your book of fables) so your scripture is meaningless to me”
Handing out tracts to me – ditto
Taking me through the 10 commandments – ditto
Inviting me to a church meeting / function – why would I go to your God shop? I don’t believe in any God!
Praying for me – feel free but it will be a futile exercise!
I am not knocking these methods, for people who are seeking, or open minded they are very effective, after all the word of God is sharper then a two edge sword!
The people I am considering are folk who were like I was, with such a deep belief in the non existence of God and the infallibility of science they are totally closed to any idea of God existing.
I was lucky. Without any human agent the Lord got hold of me directly, and opened my eyes to His truth. So how to reach those who are like I was?
I think the only method that would have had any effect on me would be to get me to honestly question what I believed in. ‘Beating me with a bible’ would be futile. The problem is that the big bang theory and the theory of evolution (microbes to man evolution, not natural selection) are so engrained into our culture (even many churches compromise the bible to make them fit) that most people assume them to be proven facts. What a master stoke of the enemy!
I have spent many hours looking at evolution and creation science and think the evidence clearly supports the creation model better then the evolution model. At the end of the day I believe the bible is the infallible word of God and that includes Genesis 1 !!
All we can do is to be informed, and discuss such things rationally at every opertunity. A good starting point is to find any news report of the latest evolutionary findings and point out how many times the words like ‘supposed’ ‘assumed’ ‘believed that’ appear in them. There are some excellent resources out there a few mouse clicks away. Although I was a staunch believer in the scientific viewpoint, I had never researched or checked the facts. I just believed it.
As ever, pray it through first
