Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD." And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it. 2 Kings 22:8
As a teenage, King Josiah, Hezekiah's great-grandson, trusted the Lord with all his heart. With the help of the godly high priest, Hilkiah, Josiah launched a series of zealous religious reforms.
A few years later, Hilkiah found the long-lost Book of the Law written by Moses. He immediately brought this discovery to the attention of the king and worked closely with Josiah to enact even greater religious reforms. Those reforms included the public reading of scripture, renewal of all aspects of worship in the temple, and resumption of the celebration of Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread.
Within a few short years, Babylon would take the kingdom of Judah into captivity as foretold by the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah. Yet in God's providence, Hilkiah's discovery ensure the preservation of the earliest books of the Old Testament in Judah's darkest hours.
What's more, Hilkiah's deep lover for the scriptures later inspired his great-grandson, Ezra, who helped to lead another national revival after the Exile.
Prayer: God, thank You that Your Word is already in my hands. Use it to transform my life and bless others now--and do so for generations to come.
