Now David informed [them], saying, "Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom." And David said, "O Yahweh, I pray, make the counsel of Ahithophel foolishness." 2 Samuel 15:31 LSB
David often wanted God to bring justice to someone who stood in the way of his plans. Second Samuel 15 seems tempered by bad life circumstances. David had an adviser that turned his back on him and was giving counsel to the adversary. There had been a time when David would have asked for justice, but this passage includes a prayer asking that his adversary would see Ahithophel’s advice as foolishness. David knew his adviser was wise and that his wisdom would help his enemy. But David didn’t ask for something horrible to happen to his former adviser; he just didn’t want to see the enemy benefit from good advice.
It’s wise to pray that God would allow the truth to be known when you know someone is telling lies. It’s kind to pray that a person you count as an adversary would have a change of heart. It’s loving to pray for those who hurt you. When anger isn’t your motivation for prayer, it will be much easier to discover encouragement from a God who loves you more than anyone else could ever hate you.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for giving me the choice to love. Love is a commandment that helps me take this journey more seriously.
