So don't be dismayed when the wicked grow rich and their homes become ever more splendid. For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave. In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success. But they will die like all before them and never again see the light of day. Psalm 49:16-19 NLT
Have you ever made the mistake of believing that wealth determines how blessed you are? It’s tempting to believe that those who are rich have been blessed by God, but the psalmist offers a reminder that wealth is not a blessing, for it cannot last from this life into the next and it may even keep you from being present for God.
If anything, it’s possible that wealth is more of a curse than a blessing if it keeps you from serving God or recognizing God’s presence in your life. The splendor of today will fade soon enough, and when those possessions crumble, what will be left?
The true blessing for you today is to recognize that God is present with you in times of plenty and times of struggle. At the end of your life, the one thing that lasts will be the investment you’ve made in God.
Prayer: Lord, You know what will last, and I trust that You can bring me safely home to You one day. May I let go of what perishes so that I can forever treasure Your love.
