Revelations gives you many clues on what city Babylon is.


Clue #1. Mystery Babylon is a city


Notice in the above prophecy that a woman is used to symbolize Mystery Babylon. Verse 18 of the chapter tells us that the woman is a city. “And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth.”




Clue #2. Mystery Babylon presides over a vast international system


In verse 1, we are told that the woman sits on many waters. Verse 15 explains the meaning of the waters. “And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the ***** sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.”
Not only is this woman a city, but the city is apparently the headquarters over a vast international system.


Starting to sound like The Vatican/Pope to me


Clue #3. The city sits on 7 hills


In verse 3, we are told that the woman rides on a beast with 7 heads. Verse 9 reveals the meaning of the heads. “And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.”
Remember, we’ve already learned that the woman is a city. This passage tells us that the city sits on seven mountains. There is a city on earth that is known as “The City of Seven Hills.” It’s the city of Rome.
But is Rome the headquarters for an international power that rules over “peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues?”
The Vatican claims to rule over one billion Roman Catholics worldwide. Remember, this prophecy was written long before the Catholic Church existed and long before Rome became her headquarters.

Clue #4. She is clothed in purple and red


Revelation 17:4 “And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:”
There are two ruling bodies in the Roman Catholic Church: The College of Cardinals and the College of Bishops and Archbishops. These two bodies are somewhat like the Senate and the House of Representatives here in the US.
An article appeared in The Criterion, a Roman Catholic publication, July 1, 1988. The article was entitled, “More than You Want to Know About Cardinals.” It stated, “Cardinals wear red, while non-Cardinal Bishops and Archbishops wear purple.”
So let’s review. Mystery Babylon is a city that sits on seven hills. Rome is known worldwide as “The City of Seven Hills.”
Mystery Babylon is to “sit” on peoples, multitudes, nations and tongues.” Rome is headquarters for the Roman Catholic Church, claiming one billion members worldwide.
Mystery Babylon is described as being clothed in purple and red. The official colors of the two ruling bodies of the Roman Church are purple and red.
One other factor should be understood. In Revelation 17, God chose to use a woman—a *****—to symbolize the Roman Catholic Church. Why?
It’s really very simple. In scripture, God always used a woman to symbolize a church. He used a virgin to represent His true church (II Corinthians 11:2), and He used a harlot to represent a false church—as he did in Revelation 17-19.
There can be only one conclusion: The Vatican is the Mystery Babylon of Revelation. And it is this false religious system that has deceived the people of the world that will be destroyed at the time of Armageddon.




And this Plus the 7 Hills is a DEAD give away ---
REVELATIONS:
10 And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.

Pope Francis is the eighth king talked about in Revelations.




The Catholic Church has deceived many, and the pope makes up his own rules, Like "he can forgive sin" as an example, or "he can speak on God's behalf." A tour inside the vatican reveals Statues of idolatry, "the god's statues" and a picture of Satan himself.

A rather brief treatment of two chapters of the book of Revelations 17 & 18.

I must say that I agree with your opinion, but there is more to the RC church in Revelations.

How about the cup....
How about 'come out of her my people...'
There is so much more....

Harlotry is essentially leaving Jesus as first love and being mixed with the things of the world.
More specifically, it is to forsake Jesus, the spring of living water, and to dig ones own cistern:
Jer 2:13
"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

It is even mixing the things of God with the things of man. Replacing the spiritual with the carnal and fleshly. A church may not be involved in worldly things such as gambling, or trading, as some churches are, but its leadership may make all its decisions based on human decision rather than the Spirit of God. Such a church is also worldly.

The prophecy on principal can be extended to not only the RC Church but any so-called church which follows the pattern of the RC church.
The reformation started with Luther etc but did not end with Luther.
History repeated itself over again in the Church of England, and led to the further formation of Presbyterian and baptist and brethren etc movements.
As history repeated itself yet again in these movements, we have the prevalence of so-called 'house churches' today. But even these aren't exactly what scripture reveals church should be, because they are largely autonomous and in some cases, 'miniature Romes' with mini-Popes ruling them. Eventually we are progressing toward the original intention of God. But things won't be perfect by the time Christ comes back - the Roman Catholic church will still be existing and the aligned protestant churches.

Possibly, but I personally disagree.

I believe the beast will either come out of the RC church,
Rev 17:11; "The beast which was and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he goes to destruction.
..or at least out of a remnant of the Roman empire, i.e. Italy, Romania, Albania, etc...

But then he (and the ten kings) will turn on the false church, he will hate her, and make her desolate and naked, eat her flesh, and burn her up with fire.
Rev 17:16; "And the ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her desolate and naked, and will eat her flesh and will burn her up with fire.
Rev 17:17; "For God has put it in their hearts to execute His purpose by having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God will be fulfilled.
The the ten kings will give him their kingdoms.
Rev 17:13; "These have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast.

I have a hard time believing this is the original Babylon for three reasons,
Rev 17:1; Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, "Come here, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters,
Rome sits on the edge of the Mediterranean sea. These is no sea by ancient Babylon.
Rev 17:9; "Here is the mind which has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits,
There were no large hills or mountains to speak of in the area ancient Babylon,

Finally... in the new Testament, Rome was often called Babylon to get past the Roman censors, (obviously Babylon did not exist in the time of the Apostles).
1 Pet 5:13; She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark.,

Some other hints....
Rev 17:5; and on her forehead a name was written, a mystery, "BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH."
Who is called the "mother of God" or the "queen mother", or in cases the "Virgin mother"?

Rev 18:7; "To the degree that she glorified herself and lived sensuously, to the same degree give her torment and mourning; for she says in her heart, 'I SIT as A QUEEN AND I AM NOT A WIDOW, and will never see mourning.'
Ask any Roman Catholic who the queen of Heaven is.

Jer 44:18; "But since we stopped burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have met our end by the sword and by famine."
Jer 44:19; "And," said the women, "when we were burning sacrifices to the queen of heaven and were pouring out drink offerings to her, was it without our husbands that we made for her sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out drink offerings to her?"
Jer 44:25; thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, as follows: 'As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled it with your hands, saying, "We will certainly perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her." Go ahead and confirm your vows, and certainly perform your vows!'

Kind of makes you wonder why anyone would even want to worship "the queen of heaven". What did God think about this?

Jer 44:2; "Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, 'You yourselves have seen all the calamity that I have brought on Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are in ruins and no one lives in them,
Jer 44:3; because of their wickedness which they committed so as to provoke Me to anger by continuing to burn sacrifices and to serve other gods whom they had not known, neither they, you, nor your fathers.
Jer 44:4; 'Yet I sent you all My servants the prophets, again and again, saying, "Oh, do not do this abominable thing which I hate."
Jer 44:5; 'But they did not listen or incline their ears to turn from their wickedness, so as not to burn sacrifices to other gods.

Babylon is Jerusalem. Revelation 16:19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

During the siege in 70 AD the Jews in Jerusalem were divided against one another. The amount of divisions were three.

Revelation 17:4-6 4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:5 And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon The Great, The Mother Of Harlots And Abominations Of The Earth.
6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

The woman wore clothes that a High Priest would wear(v4)
The woman is a harlot. Israel has been called a harlot in the Old Testament when they didn't obey God and worshiped other gods.
The woman had killed saints. The Jews persecuted the church.(v6)

Rev 18:20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

Jesus mentions at the end of Matt 23 about the destruction that would come to the Jews and Jerusalem because of the murder of the prophets, etc.

Babylon is Jerusalem.
