Secular music vs secular movies and tv

Hello everyone!

I have yet another question for all the bible buffs out there!

Ok how do I explain the difference between listening to secular music vs watching secular tv?

This is what the girls in my youth group asked- If we can't listen to secular music because it's not glorifying God, why can we watch secular movies and tv?

Example- We can only listen to Christian music, but we can watch movies and tv?

Obviously they're not asking about tv shows that come on Skinamax (it's not Cinemax after 10 pm!). They're referring to the simpsons, the disney channel, extreme makeover home edition, etc.

I told them this- the enemy uses music to get into our heads because he was the master of music in heaven. also, it's so much easier to be influenced by music. You listen to 30 seconds of a secular song and you're already dancing and singing along. However, you can watch 2 hours of a movie and MAYBE remember one whole line.

Obviously it would be impossible to cut secular tv and movies out of our lives completely unless we want to live in a bubble. So where exactly do we draw the line?

Can we listen to music like the Aladdin soundtrack and watch things on Disney channel?

The bible says we are to engulf ourselves with everything that glorifies God, but in this day and age, that's nearly impossible!

Please help me

Interesting

Thanks True for bringing out this subject. I compose music myself. I don`t sing only Gospel music but I sing also songs that I feel will bring about change in the social life of people. As a Christian , in all my tracks Iam not expected to include any dirty lyrics that do not make sense to anyone who listens to them. But I want to bring about peace and love to the people as well as bringing them close to God.

But one thing that I don`t want to do is doing my music shows along those who sing dirty lyrics because that would make me be associated with them.

I don`t see any problem in listening to the type of music or watch a movie that you like as long as it does not affect your Christian life, because God want us to be clean in thought, word and in deed

This is a good question. In a way I think the answer is simple, aside the "if it doesn't glorify GOD its not good" which is very difficult to live by.

If the message is bad, don't listen to it or watch it. Bad message of course, on screen would include visual things that we should not see such as the glorifying of sorcery (harry potter), violence, pornography for example. Even glorifying of 'happy times' with drugs (Dazed & Confused for example).

I have given up watching any television. No way I can be tempted and I try to live by Phil 4.8.

I have secular music but rarely listen to it at home as I know what I prefer to watch.

God bless

Ok so let me ask this. (actually it was one of my girls in the youth group asking me and I didn't know the answer). So if there's only good and bad, but no in between, are we still allowed to watch things like disney channel, finding nemo, shrek, etc?

I said yes, but I would like to hear everyone's opinion on this.

This is where discernment comes in, I love disney not all television programmes are filled with immoral filth. In finding nemo, the lesson of disobedience can be seen.

You must ask yourself, does this affect my walk, does the values match up with the bible.

Lets be honest we would know if the message is good or not,, if our flesh is excited do not entertain it.

If we teach ourselves to be led by the Holy Spirit, we would not get entangled by deceiving spirits.

You can always ask " What would Jesus Do "

Proverbs 3:1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, 2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. 3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.

This passage is what I think of when I decide what to watch and what to listen to.

Not All Disney programs can be trusted (Mulan, for example, glorifies pagan worship).

I am reminded of Daniel and his friends in Babylon. They received instruction in the culture etc but remained faithful to God. They knew within them right and wrong and what would dishonor God and stood against it. Their example should be ours.

We live in a world full of wickedness. It is our choice wether or not we bow to their "idols". Choose wisely what you allow in your heart and mind.

I personally refuse to watch "horror" movies of any kind. What I don't allow my eyes to see, the enemy cant use against me!! If those images are not there to start with then Satan and his imps can't torment me with them.

These teens are looking to you for an example. Will you be an example of compromise? Or strong integrity? Will you express opinion or give them answers from the word of God?

Awesome answer. I will use the story of Daniel to show my girls. Thanks

Does it really? I never noticed it. I thought that the religion in the movie was only what people believed back in ancient China which i thought was something like Buddhism or Hinduism but i never notice much of it.

ok sry my mistake but thats what they believed back then. plus the religion was not the main idea of the story.

You're right it was not the main story.

And I must admit I did enjoy mulan when I first saw it in '98.

It all boils down to what do we as an individual want to entertain, I believe the Holy Spirit gives us that answer.

We followers of Jesus have to remember that people are watching us. When we become witnesses for Christ, we lose our right to run and hide from our miscues because people who are in the process of coming to Him are keenly aware of what we do and say even when we're not aware of it ourselves.

Okay, here's a tough one. I enjoy watching horror movies, and I still do from time to time. Now, my latest favorite horror flicks are the Saw films. Sure, there are killings, but each of the three movies in the franchise so far has a good message:
  • Saw and Saw II -- Appreciate your life and don't take it for granted
  • Saw III -- Appreciate your life and don't take it for granted; learn to forgive, or you'll end up hurting yourself and the people you care about.
So, are movies that are violent but have good messages to them okay to watch?

our opinions are irrelevant... What does the Holy Spirit inside you say?

I only saw half of Saw 1 and all of Saw 2 and i thought they where kind of disturbing. Although Jigsaw was doing it all for the right reasons (to teach people right and wrong) he did it in a way that could prevoke some people to go out and kill and tell the police that what they did right because the person they killed was a drug addict, rapest, etc. All movies books and other media should be out of the hands of the easily decieved as many have posted already.

I'm not of the opinion that a movie is a spiritually good movie when it encourages people to be self-centered. For many years, Hollywood has done a very effective job of wrapping humanist philosophy in deceptively pretty packages.

Can you find Jesus there?

It's really interesting to make a line about what we can or we can't watch on TV. Sometimes i do watch movies, but when it goes wrong,i'm leaving it. It's no use to fill our mind with that kind of movie. I like comedy or true story, that can make me being refresh or get something fron other people's life. In every movie i watch, i'm always trying to find the value that can make me feel closer and can make me know God more. I'd love to find every side of my wonderful Jesus that brings creativity to all His children. And when i watch some tragic story,i realized, our live will never be as strraight as we hope, and when we see ourselves, we can realized how lucky we are. Thanks so much to Jesus!!!:star:

In music,i personally have zero tolerance to secular music. It's really affect me in bad side.

So,back into the topics,it's all depend on us to decide in which side we could stand. Never trust our strenght to cleaning every bad effect that may influence us.When satan do have target to bring us down,he will find the way,not only by music or by movies. And our capacity to keep standing is in our intimacy with God.When we really really do loves Him, i believe we can't do anything that brings sadness to His heart. It's like a red lamp beeping in my heart.

OK,Let us Glorify our LORD with ALL of our BEING :note:
