And God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name." So he called his name Israel. Genesis 35:10 ESV
Jacob could have stayed and continued working for his father-in-law, Laban, but he would have missed God’s plan. He could have been satisfied with where he was, but he would have missed where he needed to be. He could have hidden from his brother Esau and missed a memorable and welcome reunion. It seems choices have consequences—and not all of them are bad.
Jacob was seeking God, raising boys, and tending livestock. It was the seeking God part that resulted in a meeting with the Almighty One. God promised Jacob the land of his father, Isaac, and grandfather, Abraham. He was given a new name—he was no longer Jacob, but Israel. This name was God’s blessing for the man who had endured so much setback.
Perseverance can lead a man to an outcome he didn’t see coming God is aware that you will break His law—that you will sin. He is aware that you will be impulsive. He knows you will need forgiveness. But each time you turn away, endurance returns your focus to seeking God. Keep doing that every time you become aware that you’ve turned away.
Prayer: Lord, I never want to turn away from You, but I have. I never want to let You down, but I will. I never want to stay in that place, so get my attention so that I turn back to You.
