Has anyone ever experienced this? I used to alot when I was younger, but barely do anymore. It happened 2 nights ago & freaked me out a bit.

For those of you not familiar with it, this is what happens. When I wake up, I can't move, breathe, talk, not even blink. Plus, you're weak so it's like you have a weight upon you, trying to stop you from doing anything. After what seems like forever, finally I am able to move and take a BIG breath. I've read some people think it's a demon, what do y'all think? It also said to try & prevent these episodes, get lots of sleep, get rid of stress and exercise. Oh, and avoid sleeping on your back, bu tmine happens no matter what. Although, sleeping with my blanker over my head aggravates it.

My ex boyfriend suffers from it every now and then. I don't think it is demons but will try and do some more research on it and let you know what I find out ok?? :embarasse

Thank you, Saffer. I tried to look up some stuff, but mostly everything said the same thing. I appreciate your time looking into it, you're sweet. :)

spirit of fear...

Hi Wingedgrace,

It sounds like a classic symptom of a spirit of fear. Have you ever had an experience some time in your past were someone or something really terrified you? If you have you may have unwittingly given place to a spirit of fear. See Ephesians 4:27. If what I'm saying sounds about right, it would perhaps be a good idea to seek out someone who is experienced in deliverance ministry.

A spirit of fear is usually quickly and easily dealt with by someone who knows what they are doing. Look up the blood scriptures, particularly the ones that speak of being redeemed by the blood of Jesus and personalize them. You could say for example I've been redeemed from the spirit of fear by the blood of Jesus and rebuke the devil and tell him to get out of your life in Jesus name.

Let me know if this makes sense to you, and how you are getting on, and above all don't worry about it, it's no big deal.

Blessings,
Tony

PS What is happening to you has also happened to me. Once we got to the root of the fear and prayed it just left and I was never troubled with it again.

Wow. This did happen to me once. I have not told anyone because I thought people would think I was crazy. It happened to me in my sleep while my in-laws were staying with us, about 13 years ago. This is going to sound terrible, but I always thought it was spirits from my mother-in-law and father-in-law attacking me. They were not getting along well and brought much discord with them to our house on that visit. There was a dark and heavy feeling in the home, and the heaviness seemed to leave when they went home to Pennsylvania.

I was a new christian at that time and very much on fire for God. I woke up and literally thought that I was going to die. I felt hands around my throat choking me, but there was no one there! I was lying flat on my back, like someone said earlier. I couldn't breathe or talk, so I just cried out the name, "Jesus," in my mind. Suddenly the clasp on my neck was gone and I could breathe. It has never happened since, at least not by an invisible being. I remember telling my husband the next day that it happened, but he had been asleep. Besides, I couldn't have told him at the time because I couldn't move or speak.

I know this is a strange story. I praise God that all these happenings are in my past. The past is where these things belong. God has made me stronger for it, but I don't believe He will allow such things to come to me again in my life. He knows just how much we can take as His children.

Remember---if sleep paralysis happens to you...all you have to do is call out the name of Jesus in your mind. You can't speak out loud, but you can pray in your heart, and He hears you. Don't ever be afraid to go to sleep at night, because if you are His child, you are inevitably in His hands.

Hi Dreamer,

That's the 5th time I've heard of someone being strangled in bed, each time it has ended the same way, they called on the Lord and He delivered them.

What happened with your ex was very sad but not that uncommon, unfortunately. One of the reasons I'm committed to revival and revival Christianity is these things come out in the wash. Any hypocrisy or hidden sin tends to get exposed in one way or another. So people like your ex cannot sit on the front row and kid everyone they are godly when they are not, because the Holy Spirit will expose and reprove them. Our Lord, Jesus was often quite harsh in his dealings with hypocrites and rightly so it's disrespectful to Almighty God and needs to be exposed.

Blessings,
Tony

Tonyb, I love you for replying about my ex. I got kind of squeamish after I typed what he had done to me---I deleted those parts and just left the parts about the sleep paralysis. Thank you so much for taking the time to read that and to comment upon it. It really means a lot to me that you believe me and understand. One of the most frustrating things about that period of time was all my "christian" friends wouldn't listen to me or believe me. When I started to go to support meetings from the United Way, the other battered women there in the group believed me! And hardly any of them were christians. Thanks again, tonyb, God bless you.

I definitley believe that is a spirit of fear, because I have been very anxious at certain periods, and right now is one of them. Just a few things piling up in my mind, but I have good days! :) I will definitley look into what you suggested, Tony. Thank you all for replying and letting me know I'm not alone and for your advice. ((hugs to all))

According to the Mayo Clinic, Sleep paralysis is usually a symptom of narcolepsy, although it often occurs seperately. Apparently it only affects young people and attacks last only a few minutes.
