The question was, "Why do bad things happen to people?" and was followed up by this question; "Why do bad things happen to Christians?"
Firstly, bad things happen because we live in a fallen world.
But some people believe that if God is in control, why does He allow bad things to happen, like allowing woman to be raped. That answer is found in Scripture:
Luke 4:5-6
5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time,
6 and said to him, "To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will.
People today have believed a naïve lie that "God is in control of everything." That is a lie because Scripture does not tell us anywhere that He is. This passage tells us that the world is under the control of satan, as other passages tell us, like I John 5:19 and others. God does not control everything that takes place in the world, that is a false doctrine straight out of calvinism, another "Christian" cult like the JW's and Mormons. God protects His own as long as they ARE His own.
Satan took control over the world when Adam sinned and handed the lease over the earth into his hands, and that covenant lease will not revert back to God until the last days of the Great Tribulation period, where we read:
Revelation 11:15
Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever."
Until that day, satan rules over the earth and, according to covenant, God has ordained that He cannot interfere with what satan is doing in the world unless one of His children, who are ambassadors to the world on behalf of heaven, pray and ask Him to intervene. I know that because of false doctrines, many will take that statement as blasphemy...yet Scripture teaches this.
So, what about the second question...why do bad things happen to Christians?
In light of Psalm 91, there are a couple of answers: first, because God is working things out of us that should not be there, like lying, cheating, cussing, sexual sins, etc., and most of the time the only thing people respond to, is pain and misery (remember Judges and the sin-cycles of Israel). Another possible answer is that a person who got saved at one time is no longer walking with God for any number of reasons. Such a person is deceived and believes he is still a Christian, but he is not (there is no such thing in Scripture as "once saved, always saved").
If a person has backslidden and is no longer abiding in Christ, then he is not a Christian...he is under the power of satan to do with him as he pleases...he is no longer under the protection of God.
Blessings!
