Benefits of Soy Milk

More people drink soy milk, not because they have to, but deliberately because of the added health benefits. So what are the benefits of soy milk as compared to cow’s milk?

Benefit 1: Soy milk contains only vegetables proteins

Vegetable proteins have the advantage that they cause less loss of calcium through the kidneys. It is known that a diet rich in animal (and dairy protein) creates a higher risk for osteoporosis.

Benefit 2: Soy milk contains no lactose

About 75 percent of the world population cannot tolerate lactose. Some ethnic groups are more affected than others. For example 75 percent of Africans and 90 percent of Asians have lactose intolerance. As an additional benefit, soy milk contains the prebiotic sugars stachyose and raffinose. These prebiotic sugar boost immunity and help decrease toxic substances in the body.

Benefit 3: Fewer people are allergic to soy milk

Only 0.5 percent of the children are allergic to soy milk, whereas 2.5 percent is allergic to cow’s milk.

Benefit 4: Soy milk reduces cholesterol

The saturated fats in cow’s milk are unhealthy and increase your cholesterol. The protein in cow’s milk has no benefits for the cholesterol. Soy protein can decrease cholesterol levels. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration of US) confirms that soy protein, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart. The FDA recommends to incorporate 25 grams of soy protein in your daily meals.

Benefit 5: Soy milk contains no hormones

Cow’s milk contains natural hormones (from the cow) but also synthetic hormones, which can influence the good working of our own body. The synthetic hormone rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) increase milk production by as much as 20 percent.

Benefit 6: Soy milk does not cause insulin dependent diabetes

Although no general consensus exists among scientists, some studies have shown an association between drinking cow's milk in early life and the development of insulin dependent diabetes. This association does not exist with soy milk.

Benefit 7: Soy milk is rich in isoflavones

The presence of isoflavones is the most important and unique benefit of soy milk. Each cup of soy milk contains about 20 mg isoflavones (mainly genistein and daidzein). Cow’s milk does not contain isoflavones.
Isoflavones have many health benefits including reduction of cholesterol, easing of menopause symptoms, prevention of osteoporosis and reduction of risk for certain cancers (prostate cancer and breast cancer). Incidents of these cancers are very low in countries with high intake of soy products, including soy milk. Isoflavones are antioxidants which protect our cells and DNA against oxidation.

Wow

Well I think I'll try it....

Thanks for the info, Chad

God Bless you

I have it in porrige but left it off my shopping list today (thinking not sure how it benefits me anymore!!).

I shall put it back on LOL

Thanks for the info

If you have any sort of endocrinal disorder, you need to stay clear of soy products. I have a thyroid disorder and soy products have been shown to interfer with thyroid function. Just 30 mg of soy isoflavones can negatively impact thyroid function. Soy is a phytoestrogen so it acts very much like a hormone in your body and the isoflavones are considered endocrine disruptors.

So, please be careful if you have an endocrine disorder.

Hi Chad,

Nutrition is always a very interesting subject. Here's my contribution from a little bit of research I did on the net.

Unless you are lactose intolerant apparently, goats milk is supposed to be generally better for you than cows milk.

It's apparently, better to drink cows milk with minimum tampering as God naturally made it (however never drink any animal milk which hasn't been pasteurized/'heat treated' first as there may be a risk of Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria).

Unfortunately, cows milk is commonly tampered with and this mechanically homogenized cow milk can effect the body quite badly. Apparently, an enzyme associated with milk fat, xanthine oxidase can become free and penetrate the intestinal wall. Once xanthine oxidase gets through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream, it is capable of creating scar damage to the heart and arteries, which in turn may stimulate the body to release cholesterol into the blood in an attempt to lay a protective fatty material on the scarred areas. Another reason cow's milk might not be as good for you as you might think is that the fat globuals are apparently larger in cows milk than other forms of milk and harder to digest. Contributing in some cases to problems like IBS and bloating etc... Many people have reported that goats milk can help improve IBS symtoms, eczema and asthema etc.

Sheeps milk is also an option it has high amounts of zinc which can be good for the skin. It is high in B complex vitamins which is good for general well being. The Ewe produces milk which is also much higher in calcium than goat and cow's milk.

Other alternatives include rice milk and almond milk that contain no cholesterol and lactose but they unfortunately do not provide calcium like the others do. As a side issue Horses (the mare), Donkeys, Camels (including the South American camelids), Yaks, Water buffalos, Reindeers and amazingly Beavers have apparently provided milk for human consumtion also!

Our Lord has certainly provided us with a wondrous place to live!

God Bless

 Eve

Dear sister

Thank you sister Eve for sharing that information. I'm a health freak per se so I love reading on this. All the herbal supplements, the natural remedies GOD has provided goes to show you how awesome He is! At least, one method of inifinitely many :)

Some fine site for health:
webmd.com

GOD bless.

I eat and drink many soy products due to my lactose intollerance. I'm happy for the benefits from soy. Can I add to your statistics by saying that one in every five Finnish adults is lactose intolerant.

Thats awesome, I already use it, but I did not realize how good it really was. I also llike the high protien/lowfat aspect.
